The first private night began as conversation and became something else before the ribbon of white light had fully dimmed.

High Speaker Orin’s quarters were larger than the ones assigned to the core, lined with shelves of handwritten records and low tables of pale wood. She dismissed her attendants, sealed the door, and sat across from me with the same calm silver-eyed attention she had shown in the square. We spoke of the outer stair, the selection inside the black spire, the current stage of the Cursed Nebula Physique, and the incomplete knowledge the Descendants had preserved about the deeper layers of the Wound. Her questions were precise. My answers stayed within the boundaries Elizabeth and I had already agreed upon.

Somewhere near the middle of the second hour the character of the room changed.

Orin rose, crossed the space between us, and placed two fingers against the centre of my chest where the densest concentration of the advanced physique rested. She held the contact long enough to read whatever her own specialised senses required, then lifted her eyes to mine.

"The records never captured the living weight of it correctly," she said. "I prefer direct understanding."

She undressed without ceremony or invitation beyond the clear decision already made. Her body was older than most of the circle, refined by decades inside the Wound rather than by youth, and completely unashamed. When she took me into her it was with the same measured precision she brought to every other form of knowledge she valued. The pace she set was deliberate and exact. She adjusted angle and depth until the currents of the Cursed Nebula aligned with whatever internal measure she was using, then held each stage until she was satisfied. Her climax, when it arrived, was quiet and prolonged, silver eyes open and focused on my face the entire time. She required the same thoroughness from me before she allowed the first night to settle into exhausted sleep.

The second night followed the same pattern and went further.

Conversation still opened the hours, but it lasted less time. Orin’s precision deepened once she had a baseline from the previous night. She tested the physique under slower and heavier conditions, sometimes directing my hands, sometimes restraining them, always measuring the results with the same calm intensity. Elizabeth checked in once at the agreed interval and left again without comment after confirming that the terms of the private conversation remained intact. By the end of the second night Orin had mapped the major responses of the advanced stage as thoroughly as any of the handwritten records on her shelves.

The third night finished the exchange.

What remained was less measurement and more claim. Orin took what she wanted with the full authority of a woman who had waited generations for a physique capable of walking the seven towers and had decided the wait was over. The contact lasted until the ribbon of white light began its next brightening. When it ended she lay beside me in the quiet that follows complete exhaustion and spoke the knowledge she had promised.

"Each of the seven towers corresponds to a fundamental aspect of cursed energy as it exists inside the Wound. Breath, Bone, Echo, Blood, Sight, Name, and the Last. Climbing all seven in sequence, under the laws that govern this layer, is said to produce a physique capable of surviving the final boundary of the Origin Wound. Most who attempt the sequence die before the fourth tower. The few who reach the sixth do not return from the seventh. The Descendants keep the outer approaches clear and the laws recorded so that the next carrier who arrives has a chance that is more than zero."

She turned her head on the pillow and looked at me with silver eyes that no longer held only measurement.

"I will accompany the climb. My knowledge of the laws is complete. My body has already accepted the density you carry. The circle you have built is the strongest support structure any carrier has brought to the plain in the time of the Descendants. I am formally requesting a permanent place inside it."

Elizabeth received the request at first light in the quarters assigned to the core. Orin repeated the terms without embellishment. The value of a complete working map of the seven towers and a guide who had spent a lifetime reading the laws of the inner Wound was obvious. The personal claim was equally clear. Elizabeth asked the necessary questions about loyalty, hierarchy, and the existing rules of the centre. Orin answered each one directly. When the practical discussion ended, Elizabeth gave the same short nod she had given every previous addition that had proven clean.

"Accepted. You climb with us. You follow the same rules as everyone else who sleeps at the centre. And you answer to that centre the same way the rest of us do."

Orin inclined her head once.

"Understood."

The rest of the day was spent in final preparation. Orin delivered the complete working maps of the seven towers and the laws that governed each ascent. The core studied them in the large communal hall the Descendants provided for visitors of status. The maps were precise, the warnings clear, and the sequence absolute. Breath first. Bone second. Echo third. Blood fourth. Sight fifth. Name sixth. The Last seventh. No tower could be skipped. No law could be broken without immediate consequence.

When the ribbon of white light reached its next dimming the communal hall remained occupied by the full core and the newest member who had just joined it.

There was no formal announcement and no careful separation of pairs. The knowledge that the climb would begin at the next brightening removed any remaining hesitation. Bodies moved together in a long, unbroken sequence of contact that lasted until the ribbon began to lighten again. Orin’s measured precision found its place inside the existing pattern without friction. Elizabeth remained the quiet centre. Vale’s strength, Isolde’s steady calm, Thalia’s refined sensitivity, Sael’s practical intensity, and the varied hungers of the twins, Lian, Mei, Rhea, Kora, Sylis, Veyra, Seraphina, Lydia, and Feng Lan all wove around the new density of the Cursed Nebula Physique and the woman who had waited generations to feel it from the inside.

I took each of them as the hours moved, sometimes alone, more often with others close enough that the boundaries blurred. Orin’s turn carried the same exacting focus she had shown in private, now amplified by the presence of the full circle. Release, when it came, was shared more than claimed, the communal hall holding the heat and the low sounds without needing walls or secrecy. The Descendants outside the hall left the centre of their city undisturbed for the duration.

At dawn the ribbon of white light reached its brightest arc. The core rose, dressed, and stepped out of the communal hall into the pale grass. The seven coloured towers stood in the middle distance, waiting. High Speaker Orin of the Descendants walked at the centre of the formation rather than at its edge, silver eyes calm, the complete map of the climb already committed to memory by every woman who would attempt it.

The city of tents and low stone buildings watched the group leave without ceremony. The Outer Stair had brought a carrier to the plain. The selection had advanced the physique. The seven towers would now decide whether that physique, and the circle that supported it, could walk farther than any living Descendant had recorded.

The first tower, the Tower of Breath, rose ahead in deep crimson against the ribbon-lit sky. The climb began.
