10x Rewards: Conquering Women and Taming Beauties

Chapter 205 — Deeper Reflections

  • Next Chapter

The joint expedition left the temporary camp at first light.

Three forces moved together across the reflective ground: crimson robes of the Veil, pink and violet of the Twin Petal Pavilion, and the ash-grey armour of Commander Rhea's small liaison group. Isolde's living ships had been left behind at the more stable platforms. Here the ground itself was too uncertain for anything larger than what we could carry or walk.

The landscape changed without warning.

For the first few hours we crossed a plain of smooth stone that showed a sky full of slow-moving continents that did not match any chart. Then the stone gave way to a wide valley filled with falling ash. The ash did not come from any fire. It drifted downward in soft grey curtains and carried broken pieces of memory with it. More than once a disciple stopped walking and stared at nothing, trapped for a few breaths in someone else's old fear or triumph before Seraphina or Feng Lan pulled them free. We crossed the valley with cloth over our mouths and strict orders not to look too long at any single falling flake.

Beyond the ash lay a forest of glass trees.

The trunks were clear and sharp-edged. The branches rang against each other when the wind moved through them, producing a high, constant song that made conversation difficult. Mirror-born birds nested in the higher limbs and watched us with eyes that reflected our own faces back in distorted miniature. Vale killed three of them when they dived too close. The glass forest ended as suddenly as it had begun, leaving us on a high ridge of reflective black rock that overlooked a deeper basin of shifting light.

Commander Rhea walked near the front with me more often than the rotation of forces required. She said little at first. Her broken reports of Ashen Court losses in the region were practical and short. But her eyes returned to me whenever the path allowed, measuring the way the Cursed Nebula Physique handled each new environment. The interest was open and without apology. Elizabeth noticed. So did Lady Sable and the Twin Petal sisters. None of them interfered.

On the third night we made camp on a stable platform of pale stone that reflected only the immediate surroundings. Watches were set. The three forces kept to their own clusters but shared the central fire. I was checking the perimeter with Vale when the first mirror-born predator broke from the reflective ground at the edge of the light.

It wore my shape.

The copy was imperfect but strong enough. It carried a distorted version of the Cursed Nebula pressure and moved with the same speed I used in a fight. Two more formed behind it, one wearing a rough version of Vale's power and another that tried to copy Lady Sable's denser control. Then the rest of the pack arrived, each one reflecting a different member of the expedition's strongest fighters.

The camp exploded into motion.

Vale met her own copy head-on, blade against blade, both of them using the same short, brutal sequences. Lady Sable's mirror-born double lasted only moments before the real one crushed it with a precise release of power that left the reflective ground cracked. Lian and Mei worked together against a dual-physique copy that tried to separate them and failed. Elizabeth stayed near the centre, protecting Lydia and the more vulnerable disciples while cutting down anything that came too close.

Rhea's light-drinking blade took the head from a mirror-born that had copied one of her own Ashen Court soldiers. She turned to face the next and found the largest of the remaining predators already on her. This one had taken a heavier, more armoured version of her own shape and carried a blade that drank light just as hers did. The two weapons met with a sound like a void opening. Rhea held the lock for three breaths. Then her blade shattered in a burst of absorbed light and the copy's weapon cut a deep line across her back.

She went down on one knee but did not fall further. I reached her in time to drive the Cursed Nebula Physique straight through the mirror-born's core before it could finish the strike. The copy dissolved into reflective dust. Around the camp the last of the predators were being broken by coordinated force. When the final one fell the only sounds left were rough breathing and the quiet moans of the wounded.

Rhea's back was open from shoulder to hip. The cut was clean but deep, and the light-drinking quality of the broken blade had left edges that refused to close properly. She tried to stand, failed, and accepted my arm without wasting breath on pride.

"Medical tent," she said through her teeth. "Mine. Ashen Court supplies are better for this kind of wound."

I carried her there myself. The Ashen Court medical tent was small, efficient, and stocked with materials that smelled of metal and cold earth. Rhea directed me to the central cot with short, precise words while she remained conscious. I laid her face-down, cut the remaining armour away from the wound, and began the work of cleaning and sealing it with the strongest of the Ashen Court salves and my own circulating power.

The wound was worse than it first looked. The light-drinking edge had left residual traces that fought ordinary healing. I had to push the Cursed Nebula Physique into the damaged tissue in slow, controlled waves while Rhea gripped the edges of the cot and breathed through the pain. The process took most of an hour. By the time the bleeding had fully stopped and the edges had begun to knit, the rest of the camp had settled into exhausted watches and the immediate danger had passed.

Rhea turned her head on the cot and looked at me. Sweat darkened her hair. Her storm-coloured eyes were clear.

"You could have left the final work to my own people."

"I could have."

"You did not."

"No."

She studied my face for a longer moment. Then she reached back with one hand, caught the front of my robe, and pulled me down into a kiss that carried no hesitation and no residual claim, only the same direct interest she had shown on the trail. When she released me her voice was rougher than before.

"The wound will hold. The night is still long. Unless you have a reason to return to the main tents immediately, I would prefer you stay."

I stayed.

What began as careful attention to a healing back became something else once the pain had receded enough for want to take its place. Rhea was strong even injured, and she made no secret of how long she had been watching the way the Cursed Nebula Physique moved through a fight. She pulled me onto the cot with her, guided my hands where she wanted them, and took me inside her with a low sound of pure satisfaction once the position spared her back. The rhythm we found was steady and deep. She came first with her forehead pressed to my shoulder and her fingers locked hard around my arms. I followed soon after, finishing inside her while the medical tent remained quiet around us and the reflective ground outside held the last of the night.

We did not stop at one round. The second was slower, careful of the wound, and somehow more intense for the restraint. By the time the reflected sky began to lighten, Rhea slept on her stomach with one arm thrown across my chest and the sealed wound on her back no longer leaking. I lay awake a little longer, listening to the camp begin its morning routines, then rose and left her to finish the rest she needed.

Elizabeth was waiting near the central fire when I stepped out. She looked at me once, read everything she needed, and gave a small nod.

"She is added," she said. It was not a question.

"Yes."

"Then the circle continues to grow. Make certain she understands the rules the same way the others did."

"I will."

Vale, Seraphina, Lydia and Feng Lan accepted the news with the same practical silence they had given every previous expansion. Lady Sable and the Twin Petal sisters registered the change without visible surprise. Commander Rhea of the Ashen Court had joined the pattern the same way the rest had — through open interest, tested strength, and a night that required no residual force to make it real.

The deeper Mirror Expanse still waited. The Heart of Reflection still lay ahead. And the joint expedition now carried one more woman who had decided the physique that opened gates and closed residual wounds was worth the risk of staying close to it.
