Wrong Flirt, Right Trouble: His Uncle Pulls Me Close
Chapter 455: A Major Car Accident Occurred
Ivy Sherwood went to a small noodle shop next door for a bowl of noodles, then hailed a cab to head to the office.
"Here to see family at the hospital, young lady?" The driver seemed like a cheerful man.
Ivy Sherwood replied, "No, I was just here for a check-up myself."
"Your boyfriend didn’t come with you?"
Ivy Sherwood couldn’t tell if the driver was a good person or not. Plenty of people looked kind these days but harbored ill intentions.
She said, "He had something to take care of, so he left early. He asked me to call him once I arrived safely."
"Ah, to be young and in love. When I was your age, I already had kids." The driver sounded incredibly happy when he mentioned this.
Ivy also noticed what looked like a photograph hanging in the front.
"Is that your wife?"
The driver glanced at the photo and nodded. "Yeah, that’s her. We knew each other since we were little—childhood sweethearts. I liked her from the very beginning but never had the courage to confess, wasting so much time. Then... there was an accident. She’s been gone for many years now. Sometimes I think if I had just confessed sooner, maybe we could have had more time together."
"So, for you young people, if you have something to say, or if there’s a misunderstanding, you have to say it to their face. Otherwise, some missed chances last a lifetime, and you can never make up for them or get them back."
Ivy Sherwood pressed her lips together, her thoughts drifting far away.
The taxi’s radio broadcast snapped her out of her reverie. "We interrupt this program with breaking news: a major traffic accident has occurred on Airport Road involving a multi-car pile-up. The driver of a Maybach, suspected of speeding due to fatigue, was killed instantly at the scene. The situation is horrific."
The broadcast continued with details about the scene, but Ivy Sherwood’s heart plummeted.
’Airport Road... a Maybach...’
’When Quentin Blackwood left, he was driving a Maybach. And he was driving it himself!’
’Suspected to be caused by driver fatigue... judging by how Quentin Blackwood looked, he probably hadn’t rested properly in days.’
’And his flight was soon. He might have been speeding to make it on time.’
Ivy Sherwood quickly grabbed her phone and called Quentin Blackwood.
The call went through, but no one answered.
’Why isn’t he picking up?!’
Panic seized Ivy Sherwood’s heart, and her eyes instantly welled with tears.
’It’s not Quentin Blackwood. It can’t be him.’
It felt as if a stone had sunk to the bottom of the ocean, dragging Ivy Sherwood’s heart down with it.
"Driver, go to the airport!"
"What’s wrong, miss? The radio just said there was a huge accident on Airport Road. We’ll definitely get stuck in traffic if we head that way now. Are you trying to catch a flight?"
"Please, driver, I’m begging you. My boyfriend was on his way to the airport, and he’s not answering his phone. I’m a little worried."
Hearing this, the driver immediately made a U-turn with a sharp squeal of the tires. "Don’t you worry, young lady. I’ll get you there as fast as I can. Don’t worry, your boyfriend is definitely fine."
Ivy Sherwood clutched her phone tightly, calling Quentin Blackwood again and again. Still, no one answered.
Ivy Sherwood quickly called Zane Linton. He, at least, picked up right away.
"Miss Sherwood."
"Secretary Linton, it’s me. Can you get in touch with Quentin Blackwood right now? I... I can’t reach him. He’s not answering his phone, and there was a car accident near the airport. I’m worried... I’m so worried..."
"Miss Sherwood, please try not to panic. I’ll look into it immediately. I’ll call you back as soon as I have any news."
Zane Linton hung up quickly, leaving Ivy Sherwood feeling utterly helpless.
’If something really happened to Quentin Blackwood...’
Ivy couldn’t even bear to think about it. He didn’t have to be in such a hurry to get to the airport. If he hadn’t accompanied her to the prenatal check-up, or if she had just agreed to have a meal with him when he offered to change his flight, maybe he wouldn’t have been in such a rush. Maybe none of this would have happened.
The scene was chaotic, and no photos or videos of the incident had surfaced online yet.
’So it might not be Quentin Blackwood. It’s definitely not him!’
Ivy Sherwood told herself this, but she was truly panicking inside. She clenched her hands so tightly her knuckles turned white.
She didn’t want anything to happen to Quentin Blackwood.
’Don’t they say only the good die young? A menace like Quentin Blackwood will definitely live a long, long life, right?’
Seeing how anxious Ivy Sherwood was, the driver added, "It’s okay, young lady. Don’t you worry. Your boyfriend will be fine."
Ivy Sherwood hoped so, but an immense panic was consuming her heart.
’They had just parted ways. She could have called a driver for him. He was so tired.’
’He had told her to wait for him to come back.’
Before long, a video of the scene appeared online. Several cars had collided. The Maybach had been speeding to overtake another vehicle and crashed into a large truck in front of it. The impact sent it spinning out, where it was then hit by other cars from behind that couldn’t stop in time, causing a chain-reaction crash.
The scene was cordoned off. The aftermath was too gruesome to look at.
Sure enough, traffic on the highway had come to a standstill. The driver was troubled. "Look at this, miss. Who knows how long we’ll be stuck here."
"Sir, could you please open the door for me?" Ivy Sherwood took two hundred yuan from her wallet, handed it to the driver, and got right out of the car.
The traffic jam was indeed a long one, and it wouldn’t clear up anytime soon.
Ivy Sherwood started walking straight toward the crash site. It couldn’t be too far from here.
Ivy Sherwood kept calling Quentin Blackwood. For every second he didn’t pick up, her anxiety grew.
Ivy Sherwood weaved through the stopped cars and ran toward the accident. After running for more than ten minutes, she finally saw the location of the crash.
The area was sealed off with police tape. Ambulances and fire trucks were already on the scene.
Ivy Sherwood stared at the wreckage. The black Maybach was so crushed between other vehicles that it was almost unrecognizable. She couldn’t be certain if it was Quentin’s car.
’But whoever was inside... their chances of survival were slim.’
Remembering the broadcast’s report that the driver had died instantly, Ivy Sherwood’s face became impossibly pale.
"Excuse me, can I go in? My... my friend might be in there."
"I’m sorry, miss. It’s too dangerous inside right now. You can’t go in."
"Then can you tell me where the owner of that Maybach is? I want to see him."
"You can check the hospital for the other injured parties. As for that driver... we don’t even know if he’s been pulled out yet. You saw it yourself, the car is a total wreck. I heard something pierced his heart directly. I’m afraid his chances are not good."
Tears streamed down her face, one after another. Ivy Sherwood didn’t even notice the ache in her heart. "Can you please let me go take a look? Just one look."
"I can’t do that, miss."
"Then aren’t you going to contact his family? When something this serious happens, you’re supposed to contact the family immediately, right? Haven’t you contacted them yet? Can you at least let me see his phone?"
