Wolf Princess Sold to the Dragon King

Chapter 356: Semantics And Matebond Antics

  • Next Chapter

Two territorial males. One bathing chamber. A woman who would have given anything for thirty seconds of privacy to think.

Nicholas’s eyes were glued on Guinevere.

She was sitting on the counter in a silk robe that was doing absolutely nothing to help the situation because it was short and wet at the hem and the counter was cold marble and her legs were bare and her hair was damp and she looked like a woman who had just been thoroughly handled by a man who was now standing between them wearing terrycloth and territorial fury.

His wolf was so close to the surface that the tendons in his neck were corded. Then he shook his head once. Then again. Harder. The motion of a man snapping himself out of a trance that his body had walked him into without permission. He blinked. His hands unclenched. The wolf receded by a degree that cost him visibly.

Guinevere’s hands were shaking. She could feel both of them through the matebond, Maddox’s territorial fury running hot and Nicholas’s anguish running cold, and she was the thermostat caught between two temperatures that could never coexist. Her ribs ached from holding her breath. Her wolf was screaming. The marble under her thighs was freezing and she couldn’t feel it because every nerve she had was being used to process pain that wasn’t hers.

Maddox stepped forward. One step. Enough to position his body directly between Nicholas and Guinevere, blocking the line of sight.

Then he put his hand flat on Nicholas’s chest and pushed him backwards through the bathing chamber door.

Nicholas let himself be moved. He was too disoriented to resist it and too proud to acknowledge the disorientation and the combination produced a man being shoved out of a room he had just barged into while wearing the expression of someone who had walked into the wrong building and was only now reading the address.

His eyes stayed locked on her, and in that final half-second before the wood closed between them, she saw it. The full, unguarded, unarmored thing underneath the anger and the pride and the wolf. He looked at her the way a man looks at something he’s losing, and her heart cracked.

Maddox closed the bathing chamber door. Guinevere was on the other side. He stood in front of it with his back to the wood and his gold eyes on Nicholas and his towel doing the Goddess’s work.

The main chambers were dim. Kael was still in the armchair. His eyes were open now, his body rigid, watching the two kings with the coiled attention of a man who had woken up to the sound of a door being kicked in and had immediately assessed every exit.

"Shadowfell." Maddox’s voice was measured. Controlled. The voice of a king addressing another king inside his own bathing chambers. "You cannot just barge into my bathing chambers. If anyone else pulled this, I would have them arrested."

Nicholas’s chest was still heaving. His jaw was locked tight enough to crack teeth. The hurt was being packed down under layers of composure that were assembling in real time, brick by brick, each one less convincing than the last.

"I need to talk to her."

"She is my wife." Maddox’s palm stayed flat against the door behind him. "Whatever you need to say to her, you can say to me instead."

"She is my mate too, Drakencrest."

The sentence landed on the room like a hammer on glass.

Maddox’s jaw worked once. Guinevere pushed open the bathing chamber door behind them. Neither of them noticed.

"I am aware, Shadowfell." His voice dropped lower. Underneath the control was something that didn’t sound like anger. It sounded like betrayal. "When the hell were you going to inform me that my wife marked you?"

The question hit Nicholas in a place he hadn’t braced.

"We just talked about it last night."

Maddox let out a laugh. Short. Dry. The kind of laugh that contained zero humor and maximum damage.

"No, we didn’t."

"Yes, we did." Nicholas took a half step forward. "You and Kael both said you knew."

The room went cold.

Maddox’s eyes cut to Kael. Kael’s expression was the blank, carefully constructed nothing of a man who had just been named in a conversation he had been praying would never happen and was currently running a cost-benefit analysis on pretending he was still asleep.

"Kael. Tell him. You were there. We discussed this."

Kael looked at Nicholas. Looked at Maddox. Dragged a hand down his face. "We discussed... a situation."

"Which situation?" Maddox’s voice was ice.

"The general... landscape. Of situations."

"Thanks. Incredibly helpful," Maddox said, voice dry as ash. "I’ll fill in the gaps. We knew about Solveil. We didn’t know about the marking."

Nicholas took a step backwards. His boots scraped stone. The retreat was involuntary and had nothing to do with fear. He was confused. The timeline he had constructed, the conversation he thought had happened, the mutual understanding he had walked away from last night believing was solid, had just been yanked out from under him like a rug he didn’t know was borrowed.

He had sat in that chair. He had watched Maddox talk about protecting her, suppressing investigations, giving her time to heal. He had interpreted every word through the lens of a man who believed the marking was the thing being discussed. The matching concern. The matching protectiveness. The matching willingness to handle it quietly.

They had been talking about two completely different things, clearly.

Nicholas’s voice steadied. The confusion was being replaced by something harder, something that looked like a man who had made a decision and was going to deliver it regardless of the reception.

"We discussed both. And now you know." His chin lifted by a degree. "She marked me in front of witnesses to save my life and I came to tell you that by law, in Nyros, she is Shadowfell now. Legally protected. Recognized."
