Wolf Princess Sold to the Dragon King
Chapter 355: Eucalyptus, Sex, & A Man In The Doorway
The word was right there. The smallest, most devastating sentence in every language ever spoken, was sitting on her tongue like a lit match.
She never got to strike it.
Because somewhere between the ’I love you’ exchange and the door exploding inward, Guinevere Lunaris’s life made its daily transition to a shitshow.
Nicholas Shadowfell hit the bathing chamber door like a man who had been running since the matebond told him to and his legs hadn’t consulted his brain about the destination. The hinges didn’t stand a chance. The wood swung inward so hard it bounced off the marble wall and came back at him and he caught it with one hand without looking because the only thing his eyes were doing was finding her.
His chest was heaving. His pupils were blown wide, the molten gold of his wolf sitting right behind his irises like a second man looking through the same face. Sweat lined his temples. His shirt was wrinkled in a way that said he’d been horizontal five minutes ago and vertical for the last four and the transition had involved zero planning.
Guinevere’s wolf detonated.
The surge hit her so fast her spine straightened and her breath caught and every hair on her arms stood at attention. Her wolf threw itself against the inside of her ribs with the force of an animal who decided it wanted its mate and was done pretending walls existed. The sound it made was a whine so loud it vibrated through her teeth.
She was still straddling Maddox. In a silk robe. On a counter. With zero fabric below the waist and Maddox’s body between her thighs and his arms locked around her lower back and his forehead still pressed against hers from the I love you that was two seconds old and already a casualty.
Nicholas’s eyes locked onto her face first. Then they dropped. Took in the robe. The counter. The position. Maddox’s bare back. The steam still curling off both of them. The gold glow where their skin was touching. The smell of eucalyptus and sex and two people who had very recently been doing things that required hot water and zero witnesses.
His mouth opened. Nothing came out.
Maddox went still.
The kind of still that large predators go right before they decide whether they’re going to fight or assess. Every muscle in his back locked under Guinevere’s hands. His dragon didn’t rumble. It didn’t growl. It went quiet, which was worse.
A loud dragon was a dragon with feelings. A quiet dragon was a dragon with a plan.
Then Maddox turned his head slowly. The movement had the controlled rotation of a siege weapon acquiring a target it hadn’t expected.
His gold eyes found Nicholas’s molten ones across the steam.
"Shadowfell. What the hell are you doing?" His voice was level. Conversational. The voice of a man who was naked and holding his wife on a counter and had just been interrupted mid-confession by a wolf king who had apparently lost all concept of doors and what they meant when they were closed.
The silence that followed that question had a body count.
Nicholas didn’t move. His eyes were still on Guinevere. The stare was doing something that her wolf understood and her brain was scrambling to translate. Possessiveness. Anger. And underneath both was hurt.
The anger was the armor. The possessiveness was the shield. The hurt was the thing he was actually made of, and it was showing through every crack.
And that was what broke her.
Because she could survive his anger. What she could never, ever survive was being the reason Nicholas Shadowfell looked like that. The hurt was a living thing, bleeding through his expression like a wound he didn’t know how to close, and she had put it there. Her hands. Her choices. Her body on a counter with another man. She had done that. And the knowledge hit her so hard her lungs forgot to work.
All of it poured through their matebond without permission. His pain. Unfiltered, undiluted, and so vast she couldn’t find the edges of it. It filled her chest cavity the way water fills a sinking room, rising past her lungs, past her throat, pressing behind her eyes until her vision blurred. She didn’t know where his hurt ended and her guilt began. The matebond didn’t differentiate. It just conducted, and what it was conducting was destroying her from the inside out one pulse at a time.
The tears were already building because the last thing she had wanted to do on this earth was cause Nicholas Shadowfell pain and she could feel it bleeding through their matebond like ink through water, dark and spreading and impossible to contain.
Her hand flew to her mouth to stop whatever noise was going to come out, forcing it back in her chest.
She had tried to tell him in the tree pool, when she was in his arms. She had looked him in the eyes and said I am married to the Dragon King and he had said I know. He had held her and told her it was okay and kissed her forehead and she had believed, with the naive certainty of a woman who thought confession was the same as comprehension, that the information had landed.
He knew the words. He knew the facts. Knowing and seeing were two completely different currencies and Nicholas had just paid in the second one. But knowing your mate was married to another man was an intellectual exercise. Walking in on her straddling that man in a wet silk robe on a counter was a graduate-level exam he hadn’t studied for.
She had failed. Somewhere between the tree pool and this bathing chamber, the translation between what she said and what he understood had been garbled beyond recognition and the bill for that miscommunication was currently standing in the doorway staring at her with molten eyes that were trying very hard to look angry because angry was easier than the alternative.
Maddox grabbed a towel.
He wrapped it around his waist with the efficient, one-handed competence of a man who had been interrupted and was done. The coverage was adequate. The dignity was borrowed.
