Chapter 681: Chapter 74: Extraordinary Bloodline, Superhuman Transformation
They are born with Extraordinary Power.
Only humans have no fixed nature.
They are cunning and fickle, ever-changing, and possess no Extraordinary Power.
But it is precisely because they lack that innate extraordinariness that humans were able to develop technology. They invented the steam engine, the electric light, and the computer. They climbed down from the trees, walked from the ground into cities, and flew from their cities to the stars.
But those races with Extraordinary Abilities, those beautiful, immortal, and powerful races—they are the same now as they were thousands of years ago.
Like a painting that will never fade.
Stuck in the past, forever beautiful.
"Your courage, your will, your faith... I admire them."
"But without the correct Path, courage, will, and faith are not enough. No matter how great the sacrifice, success is impossible."
"But this is not without meaning—"
The Warriors had already charged him.
The golden light on a one-armed Warrior’s right arm coalesced into a long spear and thrust toward Murphy’s chest.
The spear struck the Dark Gold scales. Sparks flew as the golden light shattered, and the spear snapped in two.
The webbing of his hand tore open, and the recoil sent him flying. He tumbled several times in midair before his comrades behind him caught him.
A second Warrior rushed in from the side, clapping his hands together. A ball of silvery-white light gathered between his palms, swelled to the size of a human head, and shot forward—slamming into Murphy’s wing.
The silvery-white light exploded. The wing was completely unharmed, and fragments of silver light slid off the membrane like water over glass.
A third, a fourth, a fifth.
They swarmed him from all directions, crashing their bodies, their flesh, their light against the giant Dark Gold dragon.
Golden light shattered, silver light was extinguished, and a pale green flame burned for an instant upon the scales before dissipating.
They were thrown back, knocked away, hurled to the ground by the recoil—only to fly up, charge forward, and crash against him once more.
"Release the High Priest!"
"Give us back our High Priest!"
"Invader—get off our land!"
Saladin paid no attention to the Warriors’ cries.
His eyes were locked on Murphy. "What do you mean?! What is this Thought Steel Seal? What is the correct Path? What in the world are you talking about?"
Murphy still did not answer.
Crimson light surged from his body, washing over the Warriors like a tide.
"Because you have awaited my arrival, just as three thousand years ago, you awaited a mere glance from Him."
Saladin’s pupils contracted violently.
’Three thousand years ago? Him?’
"This... This is..."
The Crimson light flared, engulfing everything.
...
「The Sol Defense Line.」
This had once been a border city where Kronos and the Society of Truth conducted trade.
Caravans came and went, goods piled high, and taverns were always full.
Today, it was the same as ever.
And yet, it was also the center of a worldwide battlefield.
Before the defense line, high above the earth.
Four figures and a streak of white light were tangled in the sky over the open plains.
The ground below was a crisscrossing web of gullies and fissures, as if a giant claw had repeatedly plowed through it.
The distant lake was gone, leaving only a parched basin.
At the bottom of the basin, the cracked mud had been ground to powder.
Farther away, a mountain range had been sheared off.
The rock at the break was exposed, the cross-section perfectly smooth.
Cheris hovered in midair.
A deep blue Magic Robe enveloped her slender body. Intricate golden patterns embroidered on its hem pulsed faintly with the ebb and flow of her Magic Power.
Her flaxen hair drifted on the wind, revealing a long neck and a sharply defined jawline.
Her features were delicate, her jade-green eyes like chips of ice.
Her hands hung at her sides, fingers slightly splayed.
Tiny motes of white light danced at her fingertips, like starlight gathering and scattering.
Her four opponents stood before her.
To her left was Aurelius.
He had the appearance of a middle-aged man, powerfully built with bronze skin.
His arms were covered in cyan scales, and a pair of enormous eagle wings protruded from his back.
His eyes were amber, with slitted pupils.
He was currently gasping for breath.
A charred gash ran across the scales on his chest, stretching from his collarbone to his ribs. Its edges still smoldered.
To her right was Celeine.
Her face was beautiful but pale as paper. Her silvery-white hair lay in a tangled mess on her shoulders.
Her left arm was gone from the elbow down. A layer of pale blue light shrouded the stump—she had severed it herself during the battle to stop one of Cheris’s curses from spreading through her body.
Behind her hovered twelve spears formed from ice crystals.
All their tips were aimed at Cheris.
Not a single one dared to fly.
Farther back, two Demigods stood close together.
One was Elarius.
He was gaunt and ancient-looking, his beard hanging to his chest.
His entire body was covered in bark-like patterns, and his long, thin limbs resembled animate, withered branches.
From the knee down, his right leg was a charred stump that still spat embers.
Finally, there was Valerius.
He was the youngest, in his early thirties.
He had a handsome face, with blond hair and blue eyes.
But the eyeball in his left socket was gone, leaving only an empty, bloody hole from which blood still oozed.
His hands had transformed into a pair of enormous lion claws, their tips embedded with shards of his own shattered scales.
The four Demigods, each with a different form, were all in a wretched state.
Suddenly, Cheris moved.
She raised her right hand.
A beam of silvery-white light shot from her fingertips, splitting in midair into dozens of hair-thin rays that shot toward the four Demigods from different angles.
The hem of her deep blue Magic Robe whipped behind her, the golden patterns stretching into streaks of light with her rapid movement.
Aurelius beat his wings.
His form transformed into a giant golden eagle. Its talons lashed out, shattering three of the oncoming rays of light.
