Chapter 607: Chapter 41: Alternate Plane Development License
Her smile was sweet and childlike, yet it sent an inexplicable chill down Pittman’s spine.
"Are you finished?"
Pittman froze for a moment.
"Y-yes... I’m finished..."
Cheris nodded.
Then, she turned her head to look at the young man in the long black robe beside her.
"Darling, what do you think?"
Her voice suddenly softened, carrying a hint of coquettishness.
Murphy’s gaze had been fixed on Alonso from the very beginning.
His jet-black eyes were as calm as still water.
But beneath that calm, something seemed to be slowly stirring.
He ignored Cheris’s suddenly intimate form of address.
After all, she had already made some outrageously intimate moves before.
From a kiss, to interlocking their fingers, to pressing her body against his arm.
’What’s being called "darling" now?’
Then, he asked,
"What do you want me to do?"
Cheris blinked, a flicker of cunning in her emerald eyes.
She tilted her head, looking at Murphy with a slight upturn of her lips.
"Darling—"
She drew out the word.
"—it’s all up to you."
Her voice was sickeningly sweet, laced with a natural, willful arrogance.
’You’re my toy, so of course you have to take care of trivial things like this.’
Murphy said nothing.
He merely glanced at her before his gaze returned to Alonso.
Of course Murphy knew him.
Though Alonso didn’t recognize Murphy, how could Murphy not recognize Alonso?
Excluding Othilia and Margaret, he was the first Official Wizard Murphy had met in the Old Realm.
More importantly, this was the Wizard who had forced his way into Taymer Palace and interrupted the celebration at his daughter’s most important birthday party.
The one who, in front of Astemia, had proclaimed an outrageous declaration in such a high-and-mighty tone.
One of the main culprits who personally opened the passage in the Blackstone Mountains, allowing the Silver Tower to descend.
Murphy remembered that day.
He remembered the moment his daughter was attacked by his spell.
He remembered standing by, watching it all happen, almost completely powerless.
After all, back then, he was merely at the Qi Refining stage.
Before someone who had reached the Extraordinary level, there was very little he could do.
And now, this once high-and-mighty Wizard, this being who had once made all of Taymer Palace tremble, was standing before him in a cheap uniform, awaiting judgment.
So he was very curious.
Curious how this figure who once held so much power in the Old Realm had fallen to such a state.
Curious what he had experienced after arriving in the New Realm.
In fact, Murphy had noticed Alonso the moment he got out of the car.
After all, Alonso hadn’t changed his appearance or aura.
But he hadn’t taken any immediate action.
Because he couldn’t gauge Cheris’s attitude.
This seemingly innocent and carefree young woman’s mind was unfathomable.
Murphy wasn’t sure how Cheris would react if he showed interest in Alonso.
But now that Cheris had said, "It’s all up to you,"
he could make his move.
"What’s your name?"
In that instant, Alonso’s heart skipped a beat.
’It’s here.’
’It’s finally here.’
He took a deep breath, trying to keep his voice steady.
"Sir, my name is Alonso de la Torre."
Murphy nodded.
"Where are you from?"
Alonso looked straight into those jet-black eyes and said, word by word,
"The Old Realm."
The moment those two words left his lips, Alonso felt something in his chest suddenly loosen.
Thirty years.
For thirty years, he had hidden and scurried like a rat in this foreign land, bowing and scraping, living cautiously.
But now...
Alonso’s hands trembled slightly.
Not from fear.
But from excitement.
He knew he had achieved his goal.
He had finally caught the attention of this important figure from the Old Realm.
He had finally gotten the opportunity he had waited thirty years for.
’Success.’
The moment that thought emerged, Alonso fiercely suppressed it.
’I can’t think about it.’
’Absolutely not.’
’These thoughts are delusions, poison, things that will make me lose my mind.’
’Now is not the time to be happy.’
’Now is the most critical moment.’
Every sentence, every word, even every subtle expression from now on could determine the course of his future.
Alonso took another deep breath, forcing himself to calm down.
But his eyes, as he looked at Murphy, were still filled with irrepressible excitement.
"Sir, my name is Alonso de la Torre. I am a First-Level Wizard from the Old Realm."
"Thirty years ago, I came to the New Realm through the King of Wizards’ immigration policy."
"Here, I’ve worked as a docker, a restaurant waiter, a servant in a noble’s mansion, and a cleaner in a Wizard Tower."
"Ten years ago, I had saved up enough money to advance to a Second-Level Wizard, but I was caught in an accident, severely injured, and hospitalized."
"The medical bills used up all my savings, and I ended up three hundred thousand gold pounds in debt from a loan."
"With compound interest, I still haven’t paid it off."
"So I can only work here as a waiter."
Murphy listened quietly, his jet-black eyes still betraying no emotion.
But after Alonso finished, he was silent for a few seconds.
"Twenty years, to become a Second-Level Wizard?"
Alonso’s heart sank. He thought the great man was looking down on him, thinking that taking twenty years to reach Second-Level Wizard was too long, so he quickly said respectfully,
"Yes, Sir."
"But the twenty years was an accident. It was a lack of money that delayed me."
"But I am actually very talented."
"In the Old Realm, it only took me thirty years to become an Official Wizard."
"Now, if I just get the slightest chance, I can definitely become a Second-Level Wizard quickly, or even a Third-Level Wizard."
Murphy looked at him and shook his head slightly.
"No, what I mean is, twenty years is all it takes to become a Second-Level Wizard?"
Alonso froze.
He looked at Murphy, a trace of unconcealable confusion in his eyes.
’Becoming a Second-Level Wizard in twenty years, isn’t that common knowledge?’
’Why is this important figure so surprised by this?’
’Or maybe, for people like them from the Old Realm, twenty years is already slow.’
’That must be why I misunderstood Murphy’s words earlier.’
The moment this thought appeared in Alonso’s mind, he forcibly suppressed it.
’Since he’s an important figure, and since he asked this question, he must have his reasons.’
’I don’t need to question, I just need to answer.’
Alonso replied respectfully,
"Yes, Sir."
"The Imperial banks have special education loans. As long as you can save up a down payment of two hundred thousand gold pounds, you can get a loan for two million, to be paid off over thirty years."
"That’s enough money to cover the full cost of advancing to Second-Level Wizard."
Murphy fell silent again.
His jet-black eyes still showed no emotion.
Just then, an inopportune voice cut in.
"Ahem!"
Pittman cleared his throat, his face plastered with a sycophantic smile, and said cautiously,
"Lady Douglas, Mr. Melfield, uh... the auction is about to begin."
There was a hint of urgency in his voice.
He couldn’t stand to see Alonso make a comeback.
He wouldn’t allow it, not even if there was the slightest chance.
’This trash from an Outer Plane should stay in the gutter forever, forever be inferior, forever unable to raise his head in my presence.’
If Alonso really managed to latch onto Lady Douglas and Mr. Melfield, the consequences would be unimaginable.
’After that, what would become of me, Pittman?’
He didn’t dare to think about it.
So he had to interrupt.
He had to end this conversation as soon as possible.
Even if it meant offending the distinguished guests.
"You see, perhaps we should head upstairs first? The auction items are all ready. Besides the development license for the Alternate Plane, there are many other treasures. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed..."
Just then, Cheris also suddenly spoke, her voice as sweet as if it were coated in honey,
"Darling~ that’s right~ The auction is about to start, shall we go up?"
