Chapter 606: Chapter 41: Alternate Plane Development License
The cool, detached voice naturally belonged to Cheris.
She stood before the elevator, her emerald eyes gazing over with a hint of careless languor.
Don’t assume that with Cheris’s abilities, she had long been aware of everything that had just transpired.
The truth was quite the opposite.
As a being of long-lived status, the turning of a single one of her thoughts was exceedingly slow, like the revolution of a star.
Under normal circumstances, it was best to treat them as ordinary people.
Ordinary reaction speeds, ordinary perceptive ranges, ordinary temporal dimensions of life.
This was the confidence granted to them by the near-immortality of their long-lived status.
They didn’t need to constantly maintain the omniscient perspective that could perceive all things.
Because doing so would accelerate the Great Rip and shorten their already limited lifespans.
Yet their status also guaranteed that it was difficult to kill them in a single blow, even when facing beings far beyond their power.
So, they chose to live like ordinary people.
Thinking at an ordinary person’s speed, reacting at an ordinary person’s rhythm, and perceiving the world in an ordinary person’s way.
Only by doing this could they navigate the Source Sea for longer.
Otherwise, on the timescale at which they operated at full capacity, they could perceive the entirety of an event and make the most precise judgment within a single microsecond of it occurring.
They wouldn’t need to wait for so much drama to unfold before making a choice.
But now, they were just ordinary people.
That was why Cheris was only just now reacting, at the speed an ordinary person should.
And with an ordinary person’s awareness, she took in the situation.
It was just like the Divine Spirits in myths, who always arrived too late due to various mortal affairs, allowing tragedies to happen irrevocably.
Just like the ancient ancestors in novels who could never intervene at the first moment to quell disasters caused by common folk during a celebration.
Cheris’s gaze swept over the waiter lying on the floor, over the ashen-faced supervisor, and finally landed on Alonso.
The middle-aged man in the dark blue uniform was standing there, a faint smile on his face.
His gaze wasn’t directed at her.
Instead, he was looking at the young man in the black long-shirt beside her.
Cheris raised an eyebrow.
"Lady Douglas! My sincerest apologies for disturbing you! It’s... it’s my subordinates being ignorant. I’ll handle this right away, right away!"
Pittman shuddered, spun around, and the fury and authority on his face instantly morphed into fawning terror.
He hurried over to Cheris, bowed low, his voice trembling slightly.
As he spoke, he used his sleeve to wipe the cold sweat beading on his forehead.
Cheris said nothing.
Being ignored sent a chill down Pittman’s spine.
He knew he had to explain himself clearly, to absolve himself of blame. He had to make this important person understand that none of this had anything to do with him.
"Lady Douglas, please listen to me!"
His voice was rushed, tinged with a sycophantic eagerness.
"This Alonso, he’s from an Outer Plane. He’s worked here for a year and has been a troublemaker the whole time!"
"I don’t know what got into him today, but he actually dared to use Magic at the entrance and even attacked a colleague!"
"I’ve already fired him! I’ll have the City Guard take him away immediately!"
"Rest assured, nothing like this will ever happen again!"
He wiped his sweat again as he spoke, his smile growing even more obsequious.
Cheris said nothing.
She just looked at Pittman, then back at Alonso.
A cryptic light gleamed in her eyes.
Pittman grew increasingly flustered.
He gritted his teeth and continued:
"Lady Douglas, you don’t know the half of it. This Alonso is always dishonest. He slacks off, has a terrible attitude, and constantly argues with the other staff!"
"I just reprimanded him a little today, and he actually dared to talk back!"
"Trash like him from the Outer Planes should be thrown out!"
"We Imperial People work our fingers to the bone to support these parasites, and not only are they ungrateful, they..."
The more he spoke, the more agitated he became, as if pouring out all his grievances.
"We Imperial People work from dawn till dusk without complaint, giving our all for the Silver Tower!"
"But these people from the Outer Planes, they do nothing and get paid the same as us!"
"On what grounds!"
"Just because they’re First-Level Wizards?"
"So what if he’s a First-Level Wizard! He’s still so poor he can barely afford to eat! He has none of the dignity a First-Level Wizard should have."
"If you ask me, we should kick out everyone from the Outer Planes! Give the jobs back to true Imperial People!"
His voice grew louder and louder, his expression twisting with rage.
It was as if he were the victim.
As if Alonso were the unforgivable sinner.
The surrounding guests continued to watch the show.
Some looked on with approval, others with disdain, and some with indifference.
Alonso stood his ground, listening to Pittman’s accusations.
The same faint smile remained on his face.
His iron-gray eyes seemed devoid of any emotional fluctuation.
It was as if everything Pittman was saying had nothing to do with him.
But deep down, he was incomparably nervous. He knew this was the moment that would decide his fate.
Finally, Pittman finished speaking.
He was panting heavily, his face slick with sweat and oil, looking particularly pathetic under the lights.
He looked at Cheris, awaiting her reaction.
Awaiting the great personage’s judgment upon this trash from the Outer Planes.
Cheris watched him for a few seconds.
Then, she smiled.
