Chapter 604: Chapter 40: King of Wizards

"You dare to attack someone at the entrance of the Silver Tower? Right in front of Lady Douglas and Mr. Melfield!"

"Have you no respect for Imperial law? For the rules of the Silver Tower?"

His voice grew louder and harsher.

The surrounding guests continued to watch the spectacle unfold.

But a few of them were starting to eye Alonso with interest.

An Outer Plane Person who would dare to cause trouble in a place like this.

’Interesting.’

Seeing those gazes, the supervisor felt even more emboldened.

He stared coldly at Alonso, his voice dripping with undisguised contempt.

"Alonso, I don’t care what you were before. Here, at the Silver Tower, you’re nothing but a server."

"A lowly server from the Outer Planes."

"I’m docking your pay for today."

"In fact, I’m docking your pay for the whole month."

"Furthermore, as of right now, you’re fired."

"Get out of the Silver Tower and never show your face here again."

His voice was ice-cold, tinged with a hint of cruel satisfaction.

This piece of filth he’d had to look at for over a year could finally be disposed of, and with good reason.

The other servers also wore expressions of gloating schadenfreude.

’Serves him right.’

’Trash from the Outer Planes deserves what it gets.’

However, Alonso didn’t move.

He just stood there quietly, watching the supervisor.

Then, he smiled.

It was a faint, slight smile.

Yet it sent an inexplicable chill down the supervisor’s spine.

"Pittman."

Alonso spoke, his voice frighteningly calm.

The supervisor—Pittman—froze.

’This lowlife from the Outer Planes... he dares to use my name?’

"Who gave you permission—you lowly Wizard Apprentice—to speak to me that way?"

Alonso’s voice remained calm, but every word hammered into Pittman’s heart like a nail.

"Is that how you speak to an Official Wizard?"

The color drained from Pittman’s face.

Not out of anger.

But out of fear.

Alonso’s attitude—that superior, self-assured tone—made him realize something terrifying.

Lady Douglas and Mr. Melfield were just a short distance away.

If they took an interest in this affair, if they took an interest in *Alonso*...

Then what would he, Pittman, a mere supervisor at the Silver Tower, amount to?

Besides, the words ’Wizard Apprentice’ and ’Official Wizard’...

The titles stabbed into Pittman’s heart like a vicious thorn.

’Why did he target Alonso?’

Besides the fact that Alonso was from the Outer Planes, there was a more secret, more shameful reason.

It was that Alonso was a First-Level Wizard.

While he, Pittman, a native-born Imperial, was merely a Wizard Apprentice.

In his eyes, this was an outrageous injustice.

’How is that fair?’

’How could that lowly, status-less trash from the Outer Planes get to be a First-Level Wizard?’

’While noble Imperial People like us are stuck as Wizard Apprentices?’

’These damned Outer Plane People are using their higher ranks to steal jobs from Imperial People.’

’Jobs that once required a First-Class Wizard Apprentice are now being filled by Second-Class apprentices. Jobs for Second-Class apprentices are going to Third-Class ones.’

’It’s a complete rat race.’

’And it’s all because of this influx of Outer Plane People.’

’I bet soon enough, jobs meant for a Lord Wizard will be done by Second-Level Wizards! And nobody will be safe, not even high-and-mighty councillors like Laine!’

An irrepressible rage surged in Pittman’s chest.

’Why would the King of Wizards do this?’

’Why let in all these people from the Outer Planes?’

The moment the thought surfaced, Pittman shuddered violently.

’Can’t think about that.’

’Absolutely not.’

’Showing disrespect to the King of Wizards is a fate worse than death.’

He hurriedly suppressed the thought.

But the anger, the resentment, the jealousy—they had nowhere to go.

So he unleashed it all on Alonso.

"You—!"

Pittman’s face was beet-red, and the finger he pointed at Alonso was trembling.

"You mongrel from the Outer Planes! You cockroach that crawled out of a sewer!"

His voice was shrill, filled with hysterical rage.

"You think you’re hot stuff just because you’re a First-Level Wizard? Who the hell do you think you are?!"

"You’re nothing but a poor bastard drowning in debt! A useless bum who can’t even feed himself! A piece of trash only good enough to stand guard at the door!"

"You can use magic? So what!"

"The Magic Net records everything! The Empire will tax you! How many tax payments do you think you can make on that pathetic salary of yours?!"

"You dared to cause trouble here today; tomorrow you’ll get a summons from the Magic Net Administration Bureau!"

"The day after that, you’ll be arrested and thrown in jail for tax evasion!"

"And the day after that, you’ll be a corpse floating in the sewers!"

The more he shouted, the more agitated he became, and the more cathartic it felt.

All his long-suppressed emotions had finally found an outlet.

"You think you know Lady Douglas? You think you know Mr. Melfield?"

"In your dreams!"

"Trash like you isn’t even fit to shine their shoes!"

"They wouldn’t even give you the time of day!"

Alonso listened quietly, his expression unchanging, as if Pittman’s tirade were nothing more than the whisper of the wind.

’Just as I thought. Things are heading in a direction I’d hoped to avoid.’

He understood Pittman’s mentality perfectly.

Or rather, his nearly thirty years of experience had given him a crystal-clear understanding of people like Pittman.

’In Alonso’s view, they were simply incompetent and lazy—that’s why they were still just Wizard Apprentices.’
