Chapter 1390: Chapter 1390: I Thought It Was Just a Cat or a Dog
He almost immediately felt the temperature drop again, becoming even colder; outdoors was hardly bearable for anyone.
In his mind appeared the pale and haggard little face, Matthew Saxon frowned, a hint of concern faintly emerging in his eyes.
--
Early morning, halfway up the hill.
This area was all affluent neighborhoods, so it wasn’t outright pitch-black mountain forest as soon as you stepped out the door.
Both sides of the dark asphalt road were lit by street lamps, and though the light was dim, it was way better than none.
Scarlett Yates dragged her suitcase for a while, then felt her legs getting weak.
She’d just recovered from a high fever, and on top of that was quite hungry, which left her with barely any strength.
The fact she seemed to be walking out of Saxon Mansion in a composed and calm manner while dragging her suitcase was all held up by that so-called pride and laughable self-respect.
As she stepped out of the Saxon Family’s door, the moment it closed behind her, she slumped down like a deflated ball.
Her body—she knew it best.
Given her current physical condition, let alone reaching the city, even walking another half an hour would be unbearable.
It was really cold outside, much colder than she’d imagined.
Worse yet, of all times for it to snow, it had to start just as she stepped out the door.
Even Heaven, must it torment her to feel satisfied?
If... if she froze to death outside tonight, would it become sensational news?
She could already imagine how the media would write about it, surely proclaiming her misery, finally concluding that mismatched love leads to no good, Cinderella’s story exists merely in fairy tales, and ignoring the huge differences in their backgrounds results in her remaining tragedy.
Ultimately, all the blame would fall on her alone.
Even if Matthew Saxon brought a woman home in the middle of the night, it would be attributed to her lacking the charm to capture her husband’s heart.
At the end, she’d merely become the embodiment of a resentful woman and a tragedy, discussed over meals for a while, until someone new appeared at Matthew Saxon’s side, then she’d soon be discarded by everyone.
She wasn’t an important person anyway; if not for being tied to Matthew Saxon, she wouldn’t even warrant being talked about upon dying.
The more she thought, the more she felt she truly was a tragedy.
She laughed self-deprecatingly, dragged her suitcase to the wall, and pushed back its handle to place it on the ground as a makeshift cushion.
Just as she sat down, before she could figure out how to leave from there, there was a bang, and the just-closed heavy door reopened.
A Bentley as black as the night drove out.
The car lights were so dazzling it nearly blinded her.
Why was there still a car coming out at this time?
Scarlett felt a slight stir inside, with a subtle change in her expression.
Could it be... Matthew Saxon coming out to chase her?
But quickly, she realized how ridiculous that thought was.
The Bentley slowly pulled up beside her.
Its lights flickered, the black glass window slid down slowly, and the bright yellow car lights illuminated the person inside.
A woman in red extended her alluring face out of the car, her charming almond eyes half squinted with a mocking and gloating gaze upon her: "Oh my, Young Madam Saxon hasn’t left yet. Seeing that shadow earlier, I thought it was some cat or dog squatting by the wall, didn’t expect it to be you, Young Madam."
