Why Are the Psychos Obsessed with a Mere NPC?
Chapter 292 - 291: White Contract
Zhang Qin was stunned. "For me?"
He could tell these two Fog Lizards had become ownerless Alien Beasts.
But subconsciously, he wanted to find a large, adult War Beast.
That’s what he was thinking, and the words slipped out before he could stop them.
"Large Alien Beasts aren’t as agile as smaller ones." Lin Yu maintained a basic level of politeness in his every word and action.
"These two *are* adults. Why don’t you take a closer look?"
Lin Yu looked directly at Zhang Qin, a strange smile on his face. "This is the first time Jian has ever taken the initiative to give someone a Contracted Beast."
"..." Jian Yu lowered her head, shyly fidgeting with the hem of her skirt.
Zhang Qin was rather unobservant and didn’t notice anything wrong with Lin Yu’s attitude. He just thought his own eyesight might be failing him.
He bent down, staring at the Fog Lizard, which stared right back. "Are adult Firefly Lizards this small?"
Lin Yu smiled and nodded. "Yes."
Jian Yu shot him a look.
’Such an NPC.’
Wang Hu finished a roasted sausage in two bites and patted his stomach.
That hardly put a dent in his hunger. He resolved to hang a double loop of zongzi around his neck next time.
Jian Yu nudged the two Fog Lizards with her hand. "Senior Brother Wang, do you want them?"
Wang Hu was silent for a moment. "I want them, but they might not be willing to go with me."
No matter how small they were, they were still 2S Rank Alien Beasts. He had no reason to refuse.
Wang Hu was a bit blunt. "I can’t afford the medicine needed for a forced bond right now."
A voluntary Contract was something he didn’t even dare to dream of.
He also knew that Jian Yu had contracted an A Rank Alien Beast for a cousin from Shen Gu’s family. The Alien Beast’s Level later changed, and that Green Spider Ant’s rank became Level 2S.
The incident had caused quite a stir throughout the interstellar community.
However, after paying attention for a while and seeing no second case, people gradually started associating the event with words like "coincidence," "contract medicine," or "publicity stunt."
Wang Hu looked at Jian Yu’s fair-skinned profile and suddenly realized it might not have been a coincidence at all.
Jian Yu hooked her fingers under the chins of the two Fog Lizards. "I can help you form the Contract, no medicine needed."
She added, with a look of concern for Wang Hu’s sake, "Just make sure you don’t let them go hungry."
"Of course not." Wang Hu gave an awkward laugh, adjusting the two remaining roasted sausages hanging from his neck.
He grudgingly took one down and offered it to a Fog Lizard’s mouth.
Good, they ate it.
The two Fog Lizards nodded their little heads and made a few "mmm" sounds.
’Disgusting.’
’This new master’s taste buds must be broken.’
But since the little Beast Master was helping them form the Contract, they had to force themselves to pretend it was tasty.
The Fog Lizards crawled into Jian Yu’s palm, curled up, and nestled there quietly.
Jian Yu cupped them in her hands to get a better look.
They were small. The two brothers huddled together, their tails wagging back and forth.
Wang Hu rummaged through his pockets, then looked embarrassed.
His expression was slightly apologetic. "Junior Sister Jian, I might not have anything good to give you. Can I trade my reward from this mission for them?"
Jian Yu’s expression was hesitant. "You don’t have to give me anything, but there’s something I need to make clear. After the Contract, they’ll be stronger than normal 2S Alien Beasts, so don’t be surprised."
Jian Yu paused. "Also, as you just saw, I can sever your Contract at any time."
She had never really developed this ability precisely because it was too overpowered.
She could command a Contracted Beast that someone else had painstakingly raised, whenever and wherever she wanted. For others, that would naturally feel unfair.
’The Contract isn’t the problem; the after-sales service is.’
Most importantly, helping others form Contracts was mentally draining, and she was getting a little tired of having to explain it every time.
Wang Hu opened his mouth. "It’s okay, I..."
Lin Yu cut in first, his voice a slightly rough, cutesy pitch, "Junior Sister Jian, it’s their honor that you’re willing to help them form a Contract."
Wang Hu nodded.
Lin Yu lifted his chin, his red hair flamboyant, but his tone was exceptionally calm.
"Whether Junior Sister Jian helps you form the Contract or you find a Contracted Beast on your own, she has the power to sever that Contract. Therefore, the problem you’re worried about will always exist."
"What you need to consider isn’t whether the Contract will be broken, or whether your Contracted Beast will be closer to Junior Sister Jian, because worrying about those things is useless."
"You just need to understand that with a Contract initiated by Junior Sister Jian, you will not only get a powerful Contracted Beast, but you will also effortlessly connect to the beast’s voluntary spiritual power chain."
"Of course, once the Contracted Beast is given to you, it’s yours. Unless you do something terrible that makes our Junior Sister decide to take it back."
Lin Yu’s smile vanished. "And in that case, you’d deserve it."
Wang Hu: "..."
Jian Yu: "..."
Lin Yu turned his eyes to Zhang Qin, radiating an intimidating aura.
Zhang Qin was staring at the Fog Lizards in Jian Yu’s hand. The longer he looked, the cuter they seemed.
Remembering how he’d just been chased and nearly had his throat slit by these things, Zhang Qin suddenly didn’t mind their small size anymore.
Wang Hu nudged Zhang Qin with his elbow. "Senior Lin Yu is right. Big ones just look fierce, but they’re usually clumsy."
Caught off guard, Zhang Qin stumbled from the impact.
He collected himself and thought for a moment. "We’ve already taken so many Beast Crystals and Beast Plants. There’s no need to be picky now. If you’re giving them to us, we’ll take them."
Zhang Qin’s expression turned serious. "If you ever need us in the future, just say the word."
He asked expectantly, "Junior Sister Jian, when do we form the Contract? Do we need to prepare anything? Just tell us, we’ll go buy it."
Jian Yu looked at Lin Yu.
Lin Yu caught her gaze and silently stepped aside.
Jian Yu’s eyes widened in surprise.
She often saw Ling Yanzhi give Lin Yu orders with just a look, but she never expected Senior Lin Yu would understand her with just a glance, too.
’Looks like it’s not that Ling Yanzhi is good at communicating with his eyes,’ she thought. ’If it’s me, it works just the same.’
’She’s overthinking it,’ Lin Yu thought. ’My work-slave programming is just too strong.’
Jian Yu placed a Fog Lizard into each of their hands.
The next second, a cloud of red mist emerged from her chest.
The silk-like wisp of mist wrapped around the necks of the two Fog Lizards.
Within the spreading red mist, white Contract runes faintly shimmered.
Lin Yu’s eyes flashed with shock. When he came to his senses, he struggled to suppress the upward curve of his lips.
The people he had brought surrounded them, turning to look at Jian Yu with dazed expressions.
’A Contract can be this simple?’
A White Contract is a voluntary sharing, while a Red Contract is a forced one.
Zhang Qin’s eyes burned with excitement.
He released his spiritual power through his finger, tapping the Fog Lizard’s forehead. As the spiritual power slowly flowed in, the light of a White Contract flared to life.
Wang Hu, still reeling from shock, witnessed his brother’s success firsthand.
He quickly released his own spiritual power and followed suit, successfully completing the bond with the other Fog Lizard.
Everyone stared wide-eyed, their minds reeling.
Once could be a coincidence. Twice could be a coincidence. But a third time can’t possibly be a coincidence, right?
Lin Yu now suspected that Jian Yu was a Contractor.
Not the modern type of Incubation Master with high affinity, but the genius Contractor type that had appeared hundreds of years ago.
Otherwise, what kind of proper student majoring in Incubation could help someone contract two 2S Contracted Beasts with a mere flick of their finger?
This wasn’t an Incubation Master; this was clearly the makings of a Contractor!
