Chapter 1387: Chapter 1259: Battle of Motte (Part 2)

Why are the vampires launching an attack from this narrow mountain pass?

The reason is simple: They’ve been frightened by the artillery positions on Morte Mountain Highlands.

Simply put, the Holy Alliance seized Morte Mountain early and set up artillery positions.

Reaching the highest peak of the Violet County, Morte Mountain is truly beautiful; the artillerymen love it.

Because from here, they can easily target the Royal Court’s artillery positions nearby, and due to the height difference, the Royal Court’s cannons can’t reach them.

Most importantly, due to the strict mathematics environment of the Holy Alliance and the rigorous requirements of Horn’s academic lineage, the average mathematics skill of the Holy Alliance is high.

The improvement in average mathematics skills has led to the enhancement of the entire artillery’s prowess, making their cannon accuracy much higher than the Royal Court’s.

Most times, the Royal Court relies on numbers to compensate for damage, as long as they fire enough rounds, one is bound to hit.

"Boom——"

A cannonball from the Royal Court’s cannon crashes through the forest and heavily strikes the trunk of a cedar tree.

The cedar bends instantly, wood chips flying, revealing the white fibers within.

Elif tucks his head, dodging the wood chips, quickly heading towards the pass.

There are many paths up Morte Mountain, but most are either too treacherous, surrounded by layers of Holy Alliance fortifications, or targeted by the artillery positions on Morte Mountain.

Obviously, the Royal Court noticed a narrow path at the foot of the mountain guarded by only two corps, one of which, by the flag, is even the Falan Legion (a foreign legion not of Falan).

Even this place is in a blind spot for artillery, making mobilizing troops from elsewhere difficult.

No need for more words? Just charge!

Before the pass, vampire Dragon Cavalry swiftly dismounted, lined up neatly, and began advancing.

Stepping on the slightly damp soil, treading on freshly bloomed post-rain flowers, they moved forward like phantoms with beaked masks.

Some vampiric cuirassier cavalry galloped back and forth on the outskirts, seeking opportunities.

This kind of uphill attack, coupled with defensive fortifications, isn’t suitable for them to charge.

"The Royal Court’s army is attacking!"

"I know." Back against sandbag fortifications, Lanerlus swiftly wound the spring on his gun.

The next moment, he peeked from behind the fortifications, setting up his spring gun: "Praise the Holy Wind!"

After a round of Holy Wind, rows of vampires fell, but the vampires behind didn’t retreat; instead, they deployed their cannon.

Stuffing the refined corpses into the cannon’s mouth, a foul-smelling muffled thud was heard, and an iron ball the size of a fat peach shot out.

With a whistling sound, the freshly repaired low wall fortifications shook violently, dust and wall skin showered down, revealing the wooden structure within.

"They’re starting artillery suppression." Lanerlus pressed his boat-shaped helmet lower, curling himself behind the fortifications, "Watch out for cover!"

The soldiers crouched behind the fortifications, only a few grenade throwers using grenade launchers to throw plasma grenades.

At this moment, Elif also ran up carrying a gun: "How many of them are there?"

"Initially estimated, around three thousand."

A briefly panicked Elif froze, then immediately calmed: "Only three thousand?"

For a strategically advantageous position, at least five times the force is needed for a frontal breakthrough.

The narrow mountain paths don’t have much space for deployment, so multiple waves with varied forces are necessary.

Seemingly three thousand against one thousand, but actually six groups of five hundred sequentially fighting one thousand.

"Great, this military achievement comes knocking on our door." Elif clapped and cheered.

But Lanerlus was silent, only after a while did he speak: "I heard Konyaz is the Royal Court’s top general; if he’s attacking from here, he wouldn’t only send three thousand troops."

"Hey! Don’t jinx it." Elif almost jumped up, he was trained formally in the military.

Once Lanerlus spoke, he understood the meaning.

If the numbers aren’t right, then the quality must be.

What is a high-quality vampire male? No need to say, both could guess.

"Pass down, those vampire infantry might include high-level vampires capable of spells, be aware."

"Understood." The messenger immediately crawled out of the trench, ready to pass the message.

Due to the messenger’s quick zero-frame start, Lanerlus and Elif didn’t have time to stop him.

Just as he crawled out of the trench, a red-stained projectile pierced through his chest.

"Brother, are you an idiot?" Elif blurted towards the corpse.

Lanerlus understood: "Too much pressure, he panicked, it’s normal, send another to quickly pass the message."

Though the message hadn’t been formally passed, the cannon fire ceased, and orderly footsteps echoed in the mountain passage again.

"Praise the Hol—"

Lanerlus didn’t finish his words before abruptly stopping.

In front of him, the fortifications collapsed instantly, the ground littered with comrades’ remains, and the face of the leading vampire was eerily like his deceased brother.

"No—" He instinctively pulled the trigger, but only heard the spring gun’s empty "click," the copper spring failed to fire.

Many soldiers around also fell into seconds of chaos, some in a daze, some screaming with heads held; the cohesive firing rhythm was thoroughly disrupted.

Lanerlus shook his head with clenched teeth: "It’s vampire sorcery! Focus! Counterattack, counterattack now."

But it was too late, the vampire infantry quickly advanced amidst chaos, getting closer to the fortifications.

No time to rewind the spring, besides, it could trigger a second confusion or jam.

Lanerlus yanked off his bayonet from his waist, "click" attached it to the rifle barrel, turning towards Elif: "Dare?"

Elif, still with shock remnants on his face, gripped the rifle fiercely, teeth clenched: "In the Falan dictionary, ’no’ doesn’t exist!"

"Then charge!" Lanerlus jumped out of the fortifications first, bayonet aiming straight at the nearest vampire’s chest.

Elif followed closely, the soldiers behind regained composure, shouting as they charged out of the trench.

The vampires clearly didn’t expect the defenders to initiate a charge; the front-line blood gunners rushed to raise their guns, but Holy Alliance soldiers stabbed through their throats with bayonets first.

Black-red mist erupted.

Elif dodged a blood claw spell, the bayonet slashed, severing a vampire’s wrist, but another hand grabbed the rifle.

"Let go!" Lanerlus kicked the vampire from the side, toppling it, as the bayonet plunged into its heart.

The battle cries in the mountains shook the leaves loose, acid and blood flowed, bayonets and axe spears crossed.

Occasional cheating gunfire rang out too, signifying a Long Spearman tried to duel the enemy’s "Long Gun Soldier," only to be shot through the head.

The spell-casting high-level vampires were especially targeted by scouts with steel swords flanking, restrained before large-scale magic was released, then mowed down with gunfire.

After nearly fifteen minutes of stalemate, seeing their sneak attack failing and losses mounting, the vampires finally began organized retreat.

They fired blood bullets while retreating, covering the main force’s withdrawal, and soon vanished at the passage’s end.

Seeing the vampires retreat, Elif breathed a sigh of relief.

Lanerlus leaned against the fortifications, wiped the blood off his bayonet, suddenly spoke: "Earlier I said most Falan are cowards, I take that back, only a few Falan are cowards."

"Hey, that’s not right!" Elif immediately refuted, "Falan have no cowards..."

"Alright, enough squabbling." The military chaplain walked briskly over, "They’re likely organizing another attack; meanwhile, quickly check their arrangements."

Lanerlus nodded, picked up the binoculars, sneakily poked his head over the fortifications, gazing toward the vampires’ retreat.

After a glance, he yelled involuntarily: "Fack!"

Though unaware of what Lanerlus saw through the binoculars, anything urging this usually calm, aloof Corps Commander to curse must be dire news.

"What’s happening?"

"See for yourself!"

"Fack!"
