Chapter 444: Chapter 158: The Green Tea Female Supporting Character in a Period Novel (45)

The four streets had a total of eight payment points.

Normally, everyone could go straight home after their shift. The finance staff would then tally the money and submit it to the hospital’s finance department.

But today was the first day of business, and everyone was curious about how things went, so they couldn’t resist coming along. Besides, Chi Yun’er needed to hold a meeting to review everyone’s performance.

The hospital leadership hadn’t left either. After dinner, they casually strolled over to attend the meeting as well.

Today’s revenue exceeded everyone’s expectations, but the staff had no real concept of the actual profit, since Zhao Jinming was responsible for all the purchase orders and supply channels.

As far as they were concerned, good business meant they could keep working, get paid, and have security in their lives. They were simply happy about it, and that was that.

After all, any profit belonged to the hospital, not to them personally.

Chi Yun’er offered some words of encouragement and a few motivational platitudes before tactfully giving everyone some feedback.

The hospital director gave a signal. After she finished, he stepped to the center of the platform, his piercing gaze sweeping over the crowd. The other hospital leaders also watched the staff’s reactions intently.

However, with so many employees, it was impossible for them to see everyone clearly.

And what if the person in question was good at hiding, standing in the shadows?

"On behalf of the hospital, I want to thank Director Chi for her incredible ability to turn the tide. She has revitalized our hospital, and the morale of our staff has completely changed."

"I believe every employee here is deeply grateful to you. If it weren’t for you, they would still be living in mud-brick houses, going to bed hungry on earthen cots, at the mercy of mosquitoes, snakes, and vermin."

"They would have to wake before dawn, shoulder their tools, and head out to the fields. Their clothes would be splattered with mud from morning to night, with none of the dignity an educated person deserves."

"I’m not trying to pit farmers against workers. I’m just speaking what’s on all your minds, am I not?"

The women were hesitant to speak up, but some of the more boisterous men called out, "You’re absolutely right, Director! If it weren’t for Chi Yun’er, we might have spent our whole lives that way."

"There’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s the truth, and we’re all grateful to Chi Yun’er. To us, she’s the one who’s given us a new lease on life..."

Everyone began to chime in, expressing their gratitude to the hospital and Chi Yun’er.

Chi Yun’er gave a faint smile, but she looked at the hospital director with a hint of confusion.

"Dad, what’s going on?" she asked in a low voice, noticing that her father’s expression was also grim.

Mr. Chi patted her shoulder. "It’s nothing. Just some people getting greedy and trying to burn their bridges. The director wants to teach them a lesson."

Chi Yun’er nodded, took two steps back, and asked in a hushed voice, "Brother Ling, you must know what this is about, right?"

Ling Kangtai didn’t say a word, but simply pressed a letter into her hand.

They were shielded by the group of leaders, so no one noticed the small exchange.

In the dim light, Chi Yun’er’s eyes flew across the page.

She read all four pages without a change in her expression, then simply smiled faintly without saying a word.

The director continued, "To be a decent human being, you must have a conscience and some principles. The hospital has no need for the morally corrupt, or for those who take credit for others’ achievements."

"You all know these jobs aren’t easy to come by, so don’t get any selfish ideas about hurting others for your own benefit. People are watching, and heaven is watching. Sooner or later, you will pay the price for your own foolishness..."

After admonishing the crowd, the director came down from the platform. When he saw Chi Yun’er standing with Ling Kangtai, he knew at once that she must have read the letter.

"Good girl. Go on up and say a few words. Our hospital isn’t relying on these people from the shops to make a contribution. They’re the ones who depend on the hospital, not the other way around!"

"Say whatever you want. Even if you fire a hundred of them, I’ve got your back!"

The director and the other leaders were absolutely livid.

Who could do such a thing and still have the gall to stay and collect their salary?

If they didn’t find the culprit, it would feel like finding a rat dropping in their soup—utterly disgusting.

Chi Yun’er walked onto the platform with a smile. She cleared her throat and, with her excellent memory, began to recite the contents of the letter.

A deathly silence fell over the crowd. Everyone’s face flushed crimson. Even though they hadn’t written the letter, its author was standing among them.

Chi Yun’er chuckled softly. "This is actually quite normal. A big forest has all kinds of birds. People die for wealth; birds die for food."

"I’m not particularly angry or disappointed, because I made all my decisions with a clear conscience. Whether I did any of this or not, my own life would have gone on just the same."
