Way of Overlord
Chapter 717: The Sin of Yan
Once an envoy partake the food and drink of the tent, they are considered a guest. And the law of hospitality extend to them unless they broke the law of hospitality
The Yan people for example had broken a lot of las of hospitality
It is not so much that the Steppe people are naive it is just that they never considered that Yan people are so base and lowly, that they would break the trust of people
The Mayi plot for example is one example where the Yan people simply ignores all kinds of decorum.
And then there was also Ban Chao.
The story goes in the Steppe that they arrived at a kingdom of the Hu people and did something terrible there.
What did they do there?
They probably wrote all kinds of things to whitewashed what they have done. If one look at their history book of the Yan, they probably made it sound like some kind of heroic measure.
Ban Chao was given a safe passage. He was given hospitality that is afforded to foreign emissaries within a neutral host kingdom
And what did they do?
They slaughtered envoys of the Hu people. Aeryon did not know this part of the history of the Steppe.
Aeryon knows that the world he is in resemble his world and the history also is quite similar.
If he knows this part of the history he would know there is also a Ban Chao in his world
But whether in his world, or in this world, both Ban Chao are treacherous and unfaithful
In Han dynasty, there is even a proverb that is attributed to him "Without entering the tiger dens, how can you catch its cub?"
The scholars of Yan and Han is really good at whitewashing their ministers for the sake of imperialism
Treacherous ministers could have a good life and good name after death but loyal scholars and loyal minister and those who seek to reform would have their name dragged through the mud for a thousand years.
If they did that to their own people, one could not imagine what they do to those who are not of their race
In this world, the chain of events of Ban Chao raid is the same
Only the people he done it is different.
But the event is the same
They snuck into the Steppe emissaries camp and like the coward they are, they set the tents of these people on fire to avoid the Steppe making an alliance with the Hu king
One must understand, it is not like the Steppe people are na?ve and simple that they did not guard the camp heavily
It is just that they are envoys. And the Yan dynasty side also sent envoys. They are not an army. They are envoys doing the bidding of their rulers.
They probably could not have imagine that the Yan people are so base and evil that they would do such a thing
They beat the war drums to trick these panicked envoy into thinking a massive Yan army was attacking. And then Ban Chao, this cowardly piece of a human being, cut down these envoys, wiping out a delegation of envoys.
If Genghis Khan was alive at this time Ban Chao and his city would have been razed to the ground.
Why does the Steppe people never trusted the Yan? Why is it in the world Aeryon come from the Xiongnu, the Xianbei, the Xirong, never trusted the Han?
It is because from the many schemes that they did to expel the indigenous people from their lands, erase their cultures and exterminate their people, that these "barbarians" learns that to trust these race of people is as deadly as entrusting a chicken to a snake
Ban Chao, this wretched piece of work, presented the severed head of the Steppe enjoys to the King of the small kingdom.
The Yan empire was ruthless, this is Ban Chao declaration
The reason why the Hu king submitted is because he was truly shocked at the raw audacity and brutality of Ban Chao act.
Probably he even though Ban Chao is more barbaric than the Steppe people
The Steppe people never kill envoys haphazardly and even if they kill an envoy they would not have boast or be proud about it
That Hu king in this world submitted in fear but probably from that moment on, that King never trusted the Yan again
It is probably the same in Aeryon world.
The Han dynasty probably painted a different picture of that event in Aeryon world
And it is the same in this world where the Yan people painted a different picture of that event for its people.
But for the Steppe people, it was a flagrant violation of the peace and hospitality of a host nation. It shows the Steppe people why the Yan people could not be trusted.
Then Ban Chao historic killing and massacres of children and mothers all over the Steppe begins.
The method of Yan dynasty and the Han dynasty is quite the same.
They conquered an indigenous people land, kill them or drive them off the land and then claim that land as theirs from the beginning
They either concocted some mythology to make the people believe that from the beginning the land is theirs
The Yan people said they were the Yanhuang people and the land is actually the land of their gods in the past and so they are just reclaiming back the land.
Then when the Steppe people come attacking to liberate back these lands, they surely would kill. And in killing the people of Yan that the rulers themselves put in that land, they then claimed "look, at these barbaric people that attack our land. How dare they return back to therein land and kill us the occupier of these lands?"
If the Steppe people manage to come to the Central Plains and conquer Yan, the most politically correct action would be to find all of Ban Chao descendant and kill them all.
Not nine generations. But ten generation and even eleven generation.
Why does the Steppe people hold such animosity toward Ban Chao surpassing even that of Emperor Wu of Yan?
One would not understand unless one is born and lived among the Steppe people. One of the most taboo things to do is to kill envoys. It is like this in this world, and it is like this in Aeryon world
Genghis Khan wipes out an entire kingdom because his envoy was killed.
It is not merely because of a face. It is because of an insult to their culture. The enemy did not even bother to respect their culture.
When you are an equal, should learn their culture so one would understand the enemy. The fact that the enemy even cut off the head of the envoy means the enemy is looking down upon them so much that they did not even bother learning about their culture.
How could Genghis khan not send an army? Even if it just to save his face, he needs to send an army
Envoy must not be killed.
It is one thing for them to be killed accidentally in a battle but when the envoy is on the enemy tent, as long as the envoy itself did not commit any taboo of hospitality, one should not kill them
Illdar sending envoy is normal. But what is not normal is that when the envoy came, there was no intimidation, there was no trying to trick the envy with some military methods but the camp of Yindir quickly ushered in the envoy.
And the envoy expected all of this and then what the envoy did was to give all the information about IIdar and its forces.
What actually happens in that tent is something that the Illdar chief and the colander and generals of the tribe of Illdar all knows.
They were coordinating the battle
Where to win, when to lose, so that the Illdar tribe could quickly surrender to the Yindir army
Yindir chief himself is not arrogant or feel happy because of this. Because he knew that the reason why IIdar is doing this is because Illdar tribe fears the upcoming event
And then Nurzgerom is even more outrageous.
Even before Yindir sent an army they surrender, citing that they knew the trend of the world.
So, now, instead of six tribes in the north, there is only Vihur, Aestan , Nogai and Yindir.
Four tribes.
As for the tribes in the central part of the Southern Great Steppe, it is the Dayan, the Utgard and the Korun tribe.
Aeryon in a few days would announce that he would marry the daughter of the chief of Korun, so that would make it only Dayan and Utgard the two independent tribe in the central region of the Southern Great Steppe
And then there is also changes in the east
Estyin managed to conquer Shuni. Whether they conquer Shuni or whether Shuni voluntarily merge with Estyin, this is something that no one could accurately found out
Sordkazan on the other hand manages to take over Nurkazan with some scheme.
Aeryon himself did not know how Sordkazan manage to conquer Nurkazan and Aeryon also did not know the story of Estyin and Shuni.
