Chapter 831: Chapter 830: Standing Up for My Granddaughter-in-law (16)
Damian Sinclair grabbed her wrist and turned her to face him. "All of that is already in the past. I chose to tell you this not to make you blame yourself or feel guilty, I just wanted you to know—I never once thought about giving up on you."
He had never thought about giving up on her. After she returned to the country, for fear of giving her a psychological burden, he hadn’t mentioned the car accident even once.
Watching her resist and avoid him, he had started pursuing her again, inch by inch.
Bella Acker had never known any of this had happened in between; her mind was completely blank now, and for a moment she didn’t even know what to think, what to say.
If... if back then Damian hadn’t been resuscitated, if he hadn’t woken up three years later...
She and he might really never have had any intersection in their lives again.
No one would have come to tell her why Damian had that car accident; she might never have known that there had once been someone who, just to be able to see her a little sooner, had almost died like that.
Bella Acker bit down hard on her lower lip, feeling even her hands trembling.
Damian Sinclair reached out, pulled her into his arms in one motion and held her tight, gently patting her back to soothe her. "It’s over now. All of that is past. I’m standing right here in front of you, perfectly fine, aren’t I? Don’t be scared—I’m not going to die."
Listening to his comforting words, Bella Acker raised her hands to clutch at the fabric on his chest and buried her head against him.
This man she had always thought of as strong and omnipotent had actually almost died on that day five years ago.
The impact of this news on her was simply too great; she couldn’t snap out of it for a long while.
"Okay, baby, I’m right here. Don’t be afraid." Damian Sinclair patted her back, then said with a trace of regret, "I really shouldn’t have told you about this."
"If you didn’t tell me, were you planning to hide it from me for the rest of your life?" Bella Acker lifted her head to look at him, her eyes reddening as tears welled up. She ground out, "Damian Sinclair, you’re always like this, hiding everything on your own, thinking that if I don’t know I won’t be sad. But you don’t understand—when I don’t know the truth, my mind runs wild. I start wondering if you don’t like me, if I don’t matter to you, if you really have given up on me. You have no idea what it felt like that day, sitting outside Joyland, waiting until my heart went completely cold."
"I’m sorry. I didn’t understand before, but I do now." Watching the tears spill from her eyes, Damian Sinclair’s heart clenched along with them, as if every drop of her tears had turned into searing magma, burning his heart bit by bit.
It was precisely because he knew that once she waited too long she would start to overthink and feel hurt that he’d wanted to go see her as early as possible.
But a single car accident had torn them apart for five whole years.
When they met again five years later, she had become very different from the girl she’d once been.
But it didn’t matter. No matter what she became, the place in his heart would always be reserved for her alone.
He apologized so straightforwardly that Bella Acker felt like she’d punched cotton—she couldn’t muster any strength at all.
This man really had changed a lot. The way he used to be, so overbearing and hard-headed—when had he ever bowed his head?
But now he kept a tight rein on his temper, compromising and giving ground to her again and again. Compared to before, it was like night and day.
Bella Acker’s emotions calmed a little. She lowered her head and said, "This wasn’t your fault. You don’t have to apologize."
"If you’re hurting, then it is my fault." Damian Sinclair reached out to wipe away the tears on her face, his voice gentle. "It won’t happen again."
