Void System: Every Heroine Makes Me Stronger
Chapter 109: The Missing Records and the Woman Who Found Them
The knock came from the south gate in the middle of an otherwise ordinary afternoon.
Severin was already crossing the inner court when Marienne reached the west leaf. Alicia kept his right side, silver ears turned toward the gate while Marienne fitted the key into the lock.
The leaf opened inward.
Nyra stood outside.
Road dust dulled the hem of her cloak and the leather of her boots. Her bag still crossed her shoulder. The knife at her waist hadn’t moved. In her hand was a compact packet wrapped in brown paper.
She looked past Marienne and found Severin.
"I came back."
"I can see that." His gaze moved once over the road behind her. "Tail?"
An ear shifted. "Not on the final approach. I broke contact before I came near the manor."
Alicia listened for another moment, then looked up at him. "Nothing close enough for me to hear, Master."
"Good."
Nyra stepped through the gate. The established ward brushed Severin’s awareness at the south boundary and faded as quickly as it came. It gave him nothing beyond the crossing.
Marienne pulled the west leaf shut and locked it. She drew the key free.
Nyra’s tail loosened behind her before going still again. "Warm welcome."
Severin looked at the packet. "Records room."
He turned first.
Alicia moved with him without being called. Nyra followed, carrying the packet herself. Marienne caught up after securing the key.
Nobody asked Nyra why she’d returned.
The west records room looked almost exactly as Severin had left it that morning. Marienne’s ledger remained on the table. The false note sat beneath the clean paperweight near the edge of her working space.
Nyra noticed it before she sat down.
She didn’t sit.
"What’s that?"
"Something that arrived after you left." Severin nodded to Marienne.
Marienne lifted the paperweight and turned the note on the table, keeping her fingers on a clean corner. "Read it there. Don’t mix it with what you brought."
Nyra leaned over the marks.
Her face changed.
"That’s close to my cipher."
"Close?" Severin asked.
"Close enough to be deliberate." She read farther. Her ears flattened for a heartbeat. "I didn’t write this."
Severin waited until she reached the location.
Nyra’s eyes stopped on the final line.
"The west cart track," she said. "Beside the low stone wall."
"You know it."
"That’s where he followed me."
Alicia’s attention sharpened. Marienne didn’t touch the new packet.
"Who?" Severin asked.
"The handler from the lower buyer hall. Right side. He was around my tether and cuffs when buyers came through." Nyra straightened. "I saw his face on the road. He stayed behind me through Greycross, then took the west turn after I did."
Severin looked at the false note again.
Same road. That gave the handler access to the place. Nothing more.
"And the packet?"
Nyra set it in the clear space in front of Marienne.
"I didn’t go back to the house once I knew he was there. I kept him at a distance until he stopped watching me carefully enough." Her mouth pulled sideways. "Men get lazy when they think the woman ahead of them is the person being followed."
Marienne glanced up. "He led you somewhere?"
"A paper drop. No sign. No useful name nailed over the door." Nyra rested her hand on the back of an empty chair. "He made contact, left, and I waited. I couldn’t confirm anyone else watching the immediate route. I took the packet after that."
"You didn’t take him?" Alicia asked.
Nyra looked at her. "And announce that I knew he existed? No."
Alicia’s tail gave a small flick. "Fair."
Severin kept his eyes on Nyra. "You broke contact before coming here."
"Yes."
"Then we work with what you brought."
For a fraction of a second, Nyra simply looked at him. Her ears shifted forward, then settled.
"All right," she said. "That was almost reassuring."
Marienne pulled the packet toward herself. "Try not to become emotional. You’ll upset the accounts."
Nyra gave her a dry look. "I’ll suffer quietly."
Marienne opened the wrapping.
Inside were folded sheets, narrow route slips, and compact record leaves. She kept each piece inside the packet’s original spread until she had seen the whole set, then separated a small group onto a clean sheet.
She read without speaking for a while.
Severin watched her eyes move between a meeting entry and a series of route marks.
"This belongs beside the old market records," Marienne said at last. "Not because I like the handwriting. I want the paper and ink compared."
Severin opened the Void Vault.
Dense black mist poured over the clear end of the table. It gathered into a dark coil, thick enough to hide the wood beneath it. When the mist drew back, the captive-market transaction records taken from the lower hall rested there intact.
Nyra’s gaze followed the last black wisp as it vanished.
Marienne didn’t waste time commenting on it. She selected a small sample from the recovered packet and matched it against the known records without allowing the piles to touch.
"Same stock?" Severin asked.
"Sight isn’t enough."
She placed her fingertips beside the comparison set.
"Composition Assay."
Marienne went still.
Her eyes moved over the paper, then the inked portions, then back to the older records. She held the focus through a slow breath.
"The paper is compatible," she said. "Fiber mix, mineral load, sizing. Close enough that this isn’t somebody grabbing unrelated cheap paper and copying a few marks. The inks also sit inside the same broad material family."
Nyra’s eyes narrowed at the new sheets. "So they’re real."
"No." Marienne looked at her immediately. "I said the materials fit. I didn’t say who wrote them, when they were written, or whether a single word on them is true."
Nyra’s mouth tilted. "There she is."
"You’d miss me if I became careless."
"I’d leave before it became contagious."
Alicia hid a brief smile and stayed at Severin’s right.
Severin looked down at the meeting entry. "What do the records themselves give us?"
Marienne turned the recovered sheets so the relevant lines faced Nyra without surrendering her hold on the packet.
Nyra traced the entries with her eyes.
"This meeting is bait."
"Why?"
She tapped a route mark. "Because this path is being kept open on purpose."
Marienne checked another leaf. "The handling mark repeats beyond the meeting entry."
"Exactly." Nyra leaned closer. "If it were an escape somebody forgot to close, it wouldn’t keep appearing after the meeting. They’re preserving it because they want movement through it."
Severin studied the paired entries.
The false note had tried to put him beside that road. The recovered records didn’t prove the same hand had written the note. They did make the road more interesting for a worse reason.
"If a buyer takes the open route," he said, "where do they end?"
Nyra shook her head. "Not here. The packet doesn’t give me the final point. But the route keeps feeding handling marks after the meeting. Somebody is staging people or goods beyond it. Maybe both."
"You can’t prove which."
"No."
’Good.’
She was still leaving the unknowns where they belonged.
Marienne turned another sheet. "There’s enough agreement between these entries to say the open path is deliberate. That’s as far as I’ll go."
"Far enough," Severin said.
He let them continue through the packet.
Pages changed hands only when Marienne moved them. Nyra corrected market marks Marienne had read too literally. Marienne rejected a guess because the record didn’t support it. Alicia asked whether the preserved route left the meeting itself exposed. Nyra checked the entries before answering that the records didn’t show enough to claim that.
The wall clock had crept nearly 10 minutes forward by the time they reached the last paired entry.
Severin looked at the old transaction lot.
Dense black mist rose again, curling around the stored records until paper and ink disappeared inside it. The mist contracted and vanished. The old lot was back in the Void Vault, separate and intact.
Marienne gathered the new packet into her working space. The false note remained under its own paperweight.
Nyra watched Severin. "If you go to the buyer meeting, you walk into the part they’ve chosen to show you."
"I know."
"Then don’t make the meeting the prize."
Alicia’s ears turned toward Nyra, but she didn’t move from Severin’s side.
Severin pulled a clean local road sheet toward the center of the table.
"The meeting stays where it is," he said. "We take apart what feeds it. Routes. Informants. Staging points."
Nyra’s eyes dropped to the sheet.
"Better."
Severin put a finger beside the first route mark without looking away from her.
"Show me which ones they still need before night."
