Void System: Every Heroine Makes Me Stronger

Chapter 108: The House and the False Message

Morning had already filled the west records room with paper. Cold light from the west windows lay across the table edge and caught in the fresh ink.

Marienne stood at the long table with a ledger open beneath her left hand and a loose stack of market receipts at her right. Alicia stayed beside Severin, silver ears angled toward the quiet scrape of Marienne’s pen.

Nyra’s chair remained empty.

The door opened.

A young household servant stopped just inside, breathing a little faster than the walk from the south gate should have required. He held a folded paper between both hands.

"Sir. This came through the south gate."

Severin looked at the paper. "From who?"

"Street runner, sir. Didn’t give a name. He handed it over and left."

Marienne closed the ledger before reaching for the note. "Did you open it?"

The servant shook his head. "No, ma’am."

"Good." Marianne said.

She took the paper and laid it flat on the table.

Severin watched her fingers turn it over. The outside carried neither seal nor crest; the fold was the only mark visible there.

Then Marienne unfolded it.

Her expression changed by less than a breath.

Alicia noticed too. Her ears came forward.

Marienne set the paper flat again. Alicia shifted her weight once, then settled at Severin’s right, leaving the doorway clear behind the servant.

"You know it?" Severin asked.

"The marks." Marienne leaned closer, following the lines with her eyes. "They’re the cipher Nyra uses. Or close enough that I can read it without guessing."

"That makes it hers?"

Marienne looked up. "No. It makes the marks familiar."

Marienne drew a blank sheet closer and wrote out the plain sense of the marks as she went, keeping the original open beside it. Her pen paused at a cramped turn near the bottom, moved back, then continued. Severin watched the meaning emerge line by line rather than the symbols themselves. Marienne kept the decoded sheet beside the original, angled toward him across the table.

She read in silence first.

A crease appeared between her brows.

"Read it."

Marienne did.

"I’ve found a lead tied to the missing records. Come yourself. I don’t want this passed through anyone else. Meet me at the narrow west cart track beside the low stone field wall. There’s enough here to matter, but not if we waste time."

Alicia went very still beside Severin for a moment. Her blue eyes sharpened when Marienne read come yourself, then settled again.

Severin kept his attention on the paper.

The certainty was wrong for Nyra.

"What isn’t there?" he asked.

Marienne’s mouth tightened slightly. She read the note again. "A source."

Alicia glanced at her.

Marienne tapped the middle line with a fingernail. "She says she found a lead. Nothing about where it came from, what part she trusts, or what part might be someone feeding her shit."

Alicia’s ears twitched.

Severin looked at the decoded lines.

Nyra had stopped people when a road became guesswork. Even when she suspected something, she usually left the suspicion where it belonged instead of polishing it into certainty.

This paper wanted movement more than it wanted to tell him anything.

Alicia spoke quietly. "Master."

He looked at her.

"When she left, she made you promise not to send me after her." Alicia’s gaze dropped briefly to the note. "She wanted to know you meant it."

Severin nodded once.

The request smelled worse without proving who had written it.

Marienne folded her arms. "If the marks are enough to move us, whoever can reproduce them can move us."

"They’re not enough."

Marienne’s eyes lifted to his.

Severin tapped the paper once. "Nobody goes to that road. Nobody follows Nyra to check."

Alicia answered first. "Yes, Master."

Her attention stayed on Severin.

"Keep the original," he told Marienne. "If another message comes in these marks, the marks don’t move anyone by themselves."

Marienne picked up the note again. "Something else has to agree with it."

"Exactly."

She gave a small nod. "Good. I can work with that."

The servant was still standing near the door. Try to be in a ready position to receive orders.

Severin glanced toward him. "Anything else from the gate?"

"No, sir."

"Go back to your work."

The servant dipped his head and left, closing the door behind him.

The room settled again. Beyond the west windows, a cart rolled across the inner court while somebody in the kitchen corridor called for hot water. Footsteps passed outside without slowing at the door.

Marienne moved the note away from the open market receipts and placed it beside a clean sheet. The decoded sheet stayed with it, while the market receipts remained separate.

"Master," Alicia said, "do you think she’s in trouble?"

Severin looked at her.

Alicia’s ears lowered a fraction.

"I don’t know."

She waited.

"This paper doesn’t tell us."

Alicia’s ears rose again. "Yes, Master."

Marienne glanced at the note, then back to her ledger.

He reached for the ledger Marienne had closed when the note arrived and pushed it back toward her.

"Continue."

Her eyebrow rose. "That’s your reaction?"

"You wanted me running south?"

"Gods, no." She pulled the ledger back. "I wanted to know whether morning work survived attempted stupidity."

"It did."

Alicia’s mouth curved.

Marienne clicked her tongue and bent over the ledger.

Severin let her.

Work resumed. Marienne’s pen scratched over paper while pages turned and a cupboard door thumped somewhere in the corridor.

The false note remained beside Marienne’s elbow.

Eventually Marienne picked it up again.

"I want something clear before I file this."

Severin looked over.

She held the paper by its upper corner. "The place. You want it copied into the record exactly as written?"

"Yes."

Marienne read the last line again, slower this time.

"Narrow west cart track beside the low stone field wall."

Severin looked at the folded paper once more.

"Keep it."

Marienne slid the note beneath a clean paperweight at the edge of her working space.

No one moved toward the gate.
