Chapter 444: The Sinister Human Heart

Zhou Jieyang was scared half to death. He dropped to his knees with a thud and tearfully begged Wang Chenning and Zheng Qiuhang for mercy.

“I have no objection!” Though Zheng Qiuhang had also been startled, she immediately went along with Wang Chenning’s lead. “A man like him is worse than an animal. He’d be better off dead!”

Zheng Qiuhang hated Zhou Jieyang to her core. The bastard had nearly destroyed everything she had fought so hard to build. She truly wanted to kill him with her own hands.

“Great minds think alike!” Wang Chenning said, looking at Zheng Qiuhang with feigned surprise. Then, he leaned in and whispered in her ear, “In fact, you should be thanking him.”

Zheng Qiuhang immediately understood what Wang Chenning meant, and her face instantly flushed red.

She knew what he was referring to.

‘It was true. If it hadn’t been for Zhou Jieyang causing trouble today, the breakthrough between her and Wang Chenning might not have happened.’

Zhou Jieyang was a terrified, crumpled heap on the floor, begging Wang Chenning and Zheng Qiuhang for his life.

He swore he would do anything for them if they would just let him live.

‘Ever since their nasty breakup, Zheng Qiuhang no longer had any feelings for Zhou Jieyang.’

‘It wasn’t that she was heartless. But after seeing Zhou Jieyang for who he truly was and being utterly disappointed, she had forced herself to move on from the relationship.’

‘Besides, Wang Chenning was so exceptional—he was practically perfect.’

‘People are pragmatic. The best way to get over one relationship is to start another.’ 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ

‘After falling for Wang Chenning, Zheng Qiuhang increasingly felt her previous relationship had been a joke.’

‘Compared to Wang Chenning, Zhou Jieyang wasn’t fit to shine his shoes.’

‘On top of that, she now poured most of her energy into helping Wang Chenning with his business. She was desperate to cut all ties with her past and never see Zhou Jieyang again.’

‘But seeing him now, so utterly spineless, she felt a fresh wave of disappointment. This ex-boyfriend of hers was a total embarrassment.’

“You’d really do anything for us?” Wang Chenning glanced at Zheng Qiuhang’s complex expression before turning back to Zhou Jieyang. “So if I told you to eat shit, would you? If I told you to go die, would you do it?”

Zheng Qiuhang: “…”

Zhou Jieyang: “…”

Wang Chenning ignored both of their reactions. He sat down expansively on the sofa and fixed Zhou Jieyang with a cold stare. “I’m sure you’re aware that you’re… no longer functional, right? How about this? I’ll give you a choice. Help me get some evidence I need. If you succeed, I’ll spare your life. I can even get you treatment, help you become a real man again!”

Zhou Jieyang froze for a second, then his heart leaped with wild joy.

‘He had been terrified that Wang Chenning would kill him today. He knew that for someone like Wang Chenning, taking his life would be child’s play.’

‘For people like them, getting away with murder was all too easy.’

Now, Wang Chenning was giving him a chance to live.

And a chance to be a man again.

He wasn’t about to let this opportunity slip by. He agreed on the spot, without a second thought.

“First, gather some dirt on Mo Dawei,” Wang Chenning said, cutting to the chase. After briefly outlining the kind of information he needed from Zhou Jieyang, he turned to Zheng Qiuhang. “You’ll be his point of contact. When he provides the information, you’ll be responsible for verifying its authenticity and importance.”

“Understood,” Zheng Qiuhang replied without a moment’s hesitation.

‘She knew that after today’s incident, most of the trust she had painstakingly built in Wang Chenning’s eyes had been shattered.’

‘Wang Chenning was using this to test her. She couldn’t refuse, and more than that, she had to do a perfect job.’

‘Since Wang Chenning was giving her this chance, she had to make the most of it.’

In front of Zheng Qiuhang, Wang Chenning forced Zhou Jieyang to swallow some kind of drug, then handed the antidote to her.

Without another word, Wang Chenning dismissed Zhou Jieyang with a wave of his hand.

Having been pulled back from the brink of death, Zhou Jieyang profusely thanked them again and again before scrambling away as fast as he could.

After Zhou Jieyang left, Wang Chenning looked at Zheng Qiuhang with a faint, unreadable smile. “You think I don’t trust you anymore after today, don’t you?”

Wang Chenning had read her mind. Zheng Qiuhang was embarrassed, but she admitted it honestly. “I handled this poorly. Thank you so much for being lenient with me, Brother Ning. I’ll pour my heart and soul into my work. I’ll never disappoint you again!”

“I don’t distrust you,” Wang Chenning said with a small smile. “You actually handled yourself quite well. You just underestimate how vicious people can be. And don’t think I’m such a great guy, either. I can be ruthless when I need to be. The reason I treated Zhou Jieyang like this, and the reason I involved you, is that I want you to mature quickly, to become more decisive. Zhou Jieyang is more cunning than you think. He’ll try to pull something. If he does, just withhold the antidote.”

Zheng Qiuhang nodded, then asked with a hint of curiosity, “And if he doesn’t take the antidote in time… what are the consequences?”

Wang Chenning replied nonchalantly, “He’ll wish he were dead for two days… and then he will be.”

The color drained from Zheng Qiuhang’s face. A bone-deep chill spread through her.

‘The man standing before her was utterly terrifying.’

‘If one of his own people were to betray him, he would show no mercy.’

A new thought suddenly struck her: ‘Wang Chenning wants Zhou Jieyang to die at my hands!’

At that thought, a cold sweat prickled her skin.

‘But she also knew she had no other choice.’
