Plus, his job meant he’d met plenty of high-ranking officials from various government bodies.
With such extensive experience judging character, he could typically size up a stranger’s background and social standing with a single glance. But now, he found he couldn’t quite read Gu Heng.
“Bro, what are you doing here?”
Wan Jiakai didn’t notice the unusual glint in Wan Jiaze’s eyes and asked nonchalantly.
“Oh…”
“Well, New Year’s is just around the corner.”
“Some of the guys who live out of town are starting their holiday leave tomorrow. So, since everyone is still around today and it’s a quiet weekend, I’m treating the guys from my detachment to a meal. It’s a way to thank them for all their hard work this past year.”
Wan Jiaze didn’t dwell on it. He just figured he’d had a bit too much to drink and his mind was a little sluggish. Facing his younger cousin, he didn’t hold anything back and explained the situation honestly.
“Since we’ve run into each other, why not come upstairs with me?”
Wan Jiaze suddenly suggested, “We’ll be in the same profession soon enough. You’ll most likely come back to Beichun after you graduate, so I can introduce you to everyone ahead of time. It never hurts to know more people in our line of work. Makes things easier no matter where you go.”
“Huh?”
“I think I’ll pass.”
“I can’t just leave Ah Heng here by himself.”
Wan Jiakai’s mind was now filled with ‘no cilantro,’ ‘gummy bears,’ and ‘one iced Americano’—the music teaching assistants. If his cousin dragged him away, he had no idea when he’d be able to leave.
“Hah!”
“What’s the big deal?”
“Just have Ah Heng come along!”
As he spoke, Wan Jiaze grabbed Wan Jiakai with his left hand and Gu Heng with his right. He then called out to a nearby server, “Move all the food from this table to private room 777. And add this table’s entire bill to room 777’s tab.”
With that, Wan Jiaze started dragging Wan Jiakai and Gu Heng toward the stairs without taking no for an answer.
“Bro, we’re all grown men.”
“Let’s not hold hands. It’s getting a little awkward.”
Seeing this, Wan Jiakai said wearily, “Fine, we’ll go up with you.”
“Tsk!”
“You little brat!”
“So picky!”
Wan Jiaze laughed and cursed good-naturedly, then let go of them.
He led the way, with Gu Heng and Wan Jiakai following behind.
“TSK TSK!”
Wan Jiakai waggled his eyebrows suggestively at Gu Heng while making a ‘9’ with his right hand.
Gu Heng pondered for three seconds, then tentatively gestured a ‘1’ in return.
Wan Jiakai: ???
“Nine o’clock!”
“We leave on the dot!”
When Wan Jiakai saw that Gu Heng hadn’t gotten his meaning, he glanced at his older cousin walking a short distance ahead and whispered.
“Suit yourself.”
“We’ll see if your bro is willing to let you go.”
Gu Heng shrugged and said nonchalantly.
“Just watch me work!”
“You just have to back me up!”
Staring at Wan Jiaze’s back, Wan Jiakai cracked his knuckles. “They say youth is an advantage in drinking. Just you watch, I’m gonna drink them all under the table!”
Gu Heng found it hard not to laugh at Wan Jiakai’s ‘grand ambition.’
‘It’s true that youth is an advantage in drinking, but that only applies if both sides have a similar tolerance to begin with.’
‘Take baijiu, for example. Some guys can drink two jin of it. Even when they get older and their tolerance drops, they can still easily put away one jin. Then you have young guys who, despite their fast metabolisms, pass out after half a jin. How could they possibly compare to those old-timers?’
‘Lately, Gu Heng had been to countless business dinners with heavy drinking. He’d seen tolerances so high that even with his own built-in buffs, he was left speechless. People in Wan Jiaze’s profession were generally known for being able to hold their liquor. The idea that Wan Jiakai thought he could drink them all under the table by himself…’
‘Mm…’
‘A newborn calf really isn’t afraid of a tiger,’ Gu Heng could only conclude.
