Chapter 624: Chapter 623: Encountering mutant rats

They stayed outside for a bit more before all of them went back to their RVs to rest.

As for the night watch, the four adults aside from him are divided into four shifts together with the older kids so that they could train for it too, just as Nate suggested.

They’re still with the company of adults, so it would indeed be good for their training.

Luciel wasn’t included in their shifts, but he would certainly not be able to sleep as comfortably as before because he also had to be more alert than usual.

When they were in the main group, he was able to sleep more comfortably because he knew that at least Treyton was there together with Zam, Wes or Myla, and Liam, who were the strongest fighters in Treyton’s team.

With them around, he could ignore the sounds of fighting and other danger signs as long as he doesn’t feel much threat from them.

Nathan, Nate, Jacob, and Camille were also strong, but it’s still not enough to let him rest comfortably without being too alert with his surroundings.

Well, at least they were still there, unlike before when he was the only one with Astrid and the others.

They could still look out for the kids and he doesn’t have to do it himself all the time. He only had to be alert in case there would be danger around that they couldn’t cope with, especially since the earthquake and tsunami had just ended.

Humans weren’t the only ones disturbed because of it, so those that had already been disturbed and displaced might set their eyes on them if they spotted their locations.

Sure enough, it wasn’t dawn yet when he sensed danger coming, then Austin’s voice came from the other RV, waking them up because of incoming mutant rats.

Luciel sat up and those in their RV were also woken up by Austin’s voice. He went out and asked Nate, who was standing on top of the other RV, "How far and how many?"

"There are a lot. They’re traveling in a very large group again. There are already about more than a thousand rats from what I can sense. With their current speed, they’ll be here in 2 minutes," Nate reported.

"Those rats are certainly those affected by the earthquake and were looking for a new place to stay at. Let’s just seal this area with vines and just let them pass by. It would be too tiring to deal with all those mutant rats," Luciel said and then turned to Jacob, "You do have some poisons that have strong smells, right? We’ll have to use them to mask our scents."

"Yes, I have," Jacob said with a nod.

"Then sprinkle them outside of the barricade I’ll make," Luciel said and quickly used the vines he was using as a bracelet to make a thick vine dome totally enclosing the areas where their RVs were.

Then he just opened a small door to let Jacob out and let him sprinkle poisons around it to confuse the smell of those rats.

Nate also began circulating more air to the space that he had enclosed.

As for Nathan, he was near the top of the dome and was looking outside to see the oncoming zombie rats.

He had only left a small space at the very top, and Nathan was already utilizing it by looking outside for the oncoming mutant rats.

As for the kids, they were also all awake, but they obediently stayed inside the RVs and didn’t bother going out to avoid disturbing him and the others.

Then Luciel turned to Camille and said, "Camille, if there are still persistent zombie rats, you should use your fire to surround this vine dome that I made."

"Ok," Camille also nodded readily.

Camille’s fire is really good because as long as he didn’t want to burn it, then they could even surround the vines without being burned at all and only burn the zombie rats.

Unfortunately, Camille’s fire is too energy-consuming, so he couldn’t use it for long. They hadn’t noticed how much energy it was consuming when he first had his ability because they just assumed that because he wasn’t proficient and because his ability isn’t great yet, he would be out of his powers immediately.

But after some time, they finally noticed that his power was consuming too much energy, and the energy accumulated by Camille wasn’t enough to support his use for it for a long time.

So, compared to others, Camille would have a slower progress in raising his ability, as he needed more energy than others.

And there’s also a limit to how much energy each person could store, so Camille really couldn’t use his ability a lot of times.

That’s why after knowing about it, Camille further intensified his physical training so that he could still fight even without using his ability at all.

Well, his ability is good, so it’s not surprising that there is such a constraint.

"Oh, they’re here and there’s a lot of them. A lot of them were those bigger mutant rats," Nathan said.

With the numbers of the incoming mutant rats passing by, they could already feel the ground vibrating for a bit.

Just as they were coming, Jacob, who was outside, also finally entered the dome, so Luciel quickly closed it, even the one Nathan was using to look outside.

"How long would the things you sprinkled last?" Nate asked Jacob.

"It would last for 2 to 3 hours. Afterwards, I have to sprinkle some again so that it could continue being effective," Jacob said.

"As long as those mutants couldn’t smell us properly, they would just continue on their way," Luciel said.

"Yeah, they better not come here as it would be hard to fight such a large number of rats with just our number," Nathan said.

Luciel didn’t say anything, but he could certainly deal with those mutant rats. However, it’s really too much trouble and would just waste more energy, so it’s better to avoid those rats if they could.
