Melody Monroe quickly pulled the glass away. "No! We have to keep drinking! If you don’t drink, are you chickening out?"

’Chickened out?’ A hint of a smile touched Evan Fairchild’s eyes.

"Melody, Melody, come on, stop drinking. Have something to eat first." Director Walsh was terrified that Melody Monroe was about to ruin everything.

’How could she say President Fairchild chickened out?!’

"No! No eating!"

Director Walsh: ...

"Kevin, why don’t you take Melody home first?"

"Okay." Kevin Coleman stood up and moved to help Melody Monroe.

Melody Monroe suddenly threw a hand onto Evan Fairchild’s shoulder. He reached out to steady her, worried she might fall.

Instead, she plopped right down onto his lap and leaned into his arms.

The move left the other three people completely stunned!

That... That was way too bold!

But Melody Monroe really had drunk too much. There were two bottles of wine; one was empty, and the other was more than halfway gone!

"She’s drunk. I’ll take her home." Evan Fairchild was no longer in the mood to deal with them.

"Well..." Director Walsh looked conflicted.

He’d wanted Melody Monroe to have a few drinks with President Fairchild, but he never expected her to get this plastered.

If President Fairchild took her away now, one could only imagine what might happen.

’Still, given President Fairchild’s reputation, he wouldn’t take advantage of a drunk woman and do something... inappropriate, would he?’

Even with that thought, he was still worried.

’But President Fairchild himself had offered to take her; he couldn’t just refuse. What if he offended the man?’

"President Fairchild, I was the one who invited Melody. Kevin and I can take her home. We wouldn’t want to trouble you." After a moment of internal debate, Director Walsh decided he had to be the one to take Melody away.

’If Melody wanted to get together with President Fairchild, it had to be when she was sober.’

’He couldn’t in good conscience let her go with President Fairchild in this state.’

"Don’t worry, Director Walsh. I know where Melody lives," Evan Fairchild retorted. "Surely you’re not questioning my character?"

"Of course not."

"Then we’ll be taking our leave." Evan Fairchild scooped Melody Monroe right up into his arms, like an adult carrying a small child, and walked out under the others’ astonished gazes.

"Don’t worry, she’ll be fine," Tommy added reassuringly, then quickly left as well.

Leaving the three of them in the room, staring at each other in bewilderment.

...

Tommy was at the wheel, merging the car into traffic.

Melody Monroe felt sick, pressing herself tightly against Evan Fairchild.

Suddenly, she lifted her head, looked at the man before her, and broke into a silly, dazed laugh.

She lifted her hand and pinched his chin.

Evan Fairchild: ...

"Mr. Fairchild, I like you so much. So, so much."

Evan Fairchild froze, his brow furrowing. "What did you say? Say that again."

"You’re my idol! When you showed up in the flesh right in front of me, my heart... it went THUMP, THUMP, THUMP! It’s about to jump out of my chest! Here, feel it! If you don’t believe me, feel it."

"The person you like... is me? Not Christopher Sterling?"

Melody Monroe’s face scrunched up. "Of course not! The person I like is Evan Fairchild! It’s you! I’m not a homewrecker! I’m not! I have nothing to do with Christopher Sterling!"

A smile crept into Evan Fairchild’s eyes.

"Are you sure you like me?"

"Mhm," Melody Monroe hummed softly, nestling meekly into his arms.

Evan Fairchild held her tightly, his heart filled with a sense of satisfaction he had never felt before.

"Even when you were just a character on a page, I liked you so, so much..." Melody Monroe murmured again, her voice barely a whisper.
