Chapter 60: The Man Behind
Chapter 60
The Man Behind
It was indeed fortunate that Ellie’s work was segregated. She quickly made up an excuse to meet with Lady Celey to escape from the mentally disturbed man, Wint, and hid in the head apothecary’s tent all day. Moreover, Nara was there to help her keep Wint at bay, or else she would have seen a man akin to a guard dog trailing behind her.
However, when Ellie returned to her own lodging, she found a devil already smirking and waiting for her...
“Haven’t seen you in just two days, you seem very happy, don’t you?” Aman smiled purposefully, and Ellie felt like those eyes wanted to say something, including the guilty look of the man next to him.
The men before her were Aman and Koross of the Setter family. Although surprised that both were waiting outside her tent, it wasn’t something mysterious. That the two would know where she had pitched her tent should be well within their capabilities.
“What brings you gentlemen to see me?” Ellie didn’t want to ramble much. Seeing Aman waiting in front of the tent, he must surely have something he wanted to discuss.
“It’s a secret,” the young man grinned mischievously. His slender finger pointed at Ellie’s tent, as if suggesting he would prefer to talk inside the tent. Koross hesitated slightly, seeing what Aman wanted, yet he didn’t deny that the matter they needed to discuss was indeed a secret.
Ellie didn’t trust Aman, but she believed Koross was not a bad person. Besides, he was directly commanded by the head of the Setter family, so he should be someone who could protect her.
“Then let’s go inside and talk,” Ellie led the two men into her dwelling. Normally, it was improper for a man to ask to enter another woman’s room, but Ellie had nothing to hide. Her tent was sparse with just blankets and pillows. She wasn’t prepared for comfort, and her clothes were in a dimensional ring given by the Setter family, used clothes included. Therefore, the tent was quite empty.
“You really don’t live like a typical lady,” Aman couldn’t help but comment when he saw the inside of the tent was bare.
He felt slightly disappointed because he couldn’t tease Ellie into embarrassment. Surely, Koross spoke up, he was here to help Ellie, not to harass her and make her upset.
“Let’s get straight to the point, Lady Ellie. In fact, what happened today...we saw everything.” Hearing Koross said this, Ellie furrowed her brows with surprise.
“At that time, we were stationed in the cave above, so when we heard the fight, we checked it out and saw you and Professor Regan fighting with the demonic beast,” Koross disclosed, which made sense to Ellie.
As mentioned before, she had set up her tent next to a cliff, above which there was a patrol unit, but Ellie had completely forgotten about it.
“Luckily, it was only I and Lord Aman on duty, while others went hunting with the soldiers,” Koross added, while Aman, showing a displeased face toward Koross, spoke up.
“You might like the gift I prepared for you,” hearing Aman say this, Koross immediately furrowed his brows.
“A gift?”
“Yes! Clearly, that demonic beast wanted something from you. When it first approached you, I felt it was acting strangely. So, I thought if it survived, it would surely come back for you,” Ellie followed what Aman was saying, and she truly agreed with him.
"So, that demonic beast shouldn’t have survived, and I couldn’t let you kill it either. Therefore, I handed it over to your beloved friend who was hiding instead."
Upon hearing this, combined with his sly gaze, Ellie immediately recalled the demonic squirrel that had suddenly appeared near the bush where Nara was hiding. Initially, she thought the heroine of the story was simply unlucky, but she hadn’t expected that all the misfortune was orchestrated by this wicked man!
"Did you make Nara kill that demonic beast?" Ellie raised her eyebrows. She wasn’t sure whether to feel displeased that Aman had interfered or grateful that he had done her this favor, or whether to be afraid of such a ruthless man.
He was still the same Aman from the novel she knew, doing everything for the story’s heroine, no matter how vile the deed. Yet now, the person Aman was helping wasn’t the heroine but her...Ellie felt that befriending Aman had its benefits as well.
"Uh, Lady Ellie...We really had no choice, since scholarship student Nara has been causing you a lot of troubles. She deserved some punishment. Besides, she’s incredibly selfish. Although she followed you from the start, she hid away just like that, not to mention when she instructed the young lord of the Femon family to hide quietly. Therefore, I think she should face the consequences of her actions," Koross added, worried that Ellie might be upset.
Aman’s expression turned slightly displeased when he saw that Koross had successfully gotten Ellie’s attention, even though everything Koross said had the same meaning as his own words.
"Koross said it, but I was the one who acted," suddenly, Koross was cut off like this. He really wanted to clench his fists and smash the head of this second young lord.
He had helped him speak, but the second young lord still managed to show off like that! Didn’t he realize how infamous his reputation as a devil was? He just didn’t want Lady Ellie to see the second young lord as a villain, but the other party just made it worse.
"Thanks for this, but Professor Regan asked to keep it a secret. I think both of you should keep it secret too," hearing what Ellie said, Aman immediately chuckled.
"Huh! You think I’d do something and leave a trace behind? If this gets out, it risks making us suspects," Aman said proudly, and Ellie nodded in acknowledgment. It was now impossible for him to be the one to reveal this matter.
"Is that all you have to tell me?"
"Not at all. If it were just that, I wouldn’t need to tell you what I did," Aman crossed his arms proudly, as if he could do much worse things for Ellie without even telling her.
"Lady Ellie, actually, we have information from the family about this Red Plague incident. We wanted to let you know."
"Jeez!" Seeing Koross explain before himself, Aman felt slightly irritated, but Koross didn’t care and immediately continued with the important matter.
"The Setter family has learned from informants about the identity of the demonic beast causing this plague. But we didn’t just learn this minor detail. The family wonders why the demonic beast appeared in an area that was already cleared and still has barriers of protection. Therefore, we continued to investigate, and this is the important news we needed to inform you of."
"We have some evidence that suggests there is a magician studying how to create demonic beasts, but nobody knows yet who this person is. To prevent you, Lady Ellie, from attracting too much attention, the Setter family would like you to refrain from showing off your skills too much and from revealing any magic devices you have received from the Setter family."
"If the villain who wants to cause trouble knows how important you are to the Setter family, they might set eyes on you, and set you as their target."
Hearing Koross say something so alarming, Ellie’s eyes shook violently. She had never heard about the creation of demonic beasts in the novel before. Indeed, in the later parts of the novel, the protagonists encountered and fought more demonic beasts. However, the heroine, who had the power of light, had learned from the Sage to create a complete light shield. Her Goddess of Light status was not to be trifled with. This power allowed Nara to prevent the attack from the demonic toxin that would infiltrate the spirit after their death.
There were many events that made the protagonists struggle hard, but after Nara defeated the first demonic spirit, she learned how to fight and win against the demonic beasts, creating a group of heroes for the kingdom. She traveled to every village affected by the demonic beast outbreak, eventually building her reputation. The villagers of the kingdom recognized her as a worthy queen to stand beside the handsome prince!
But that should have been merely the appearance of the demonic beasts. Why then was there mention of someone creating them!?
"Are you scared?" Aman asked with a mysterious smile after seeing Ellie’s anxious demeanor.
"Aren’t you scared? They are demonic beasts, after all."
"What of it? Now our Setter family has my brother with us! So, we are not the same as before," Aman proudly declared. Every time he spoke of Owen, Aman’s eyes filled with admiration and joy. He truly loved his elder brother dearly.
"Hmm?"
"What? Don’t you know how powerful your fiancé is?" Aman laughed when he saw Ellie looking so clueless. Koross, who suddenly heard from the second young lord about Ellie’s status, widened his eyes in shock.
Whenever it was, but how could he have missed the news of the eldest young lord’s engagement to Lady Ellie?!
".............." Of course, where could there be such an engagement? Ellie believed that even the eldest young lord himself did not know that he had been paired with her by his younger brother.
Aman was truly cunning. Fearing that his brother might relapse, to protect the person he loved, he whispered into Ellie’s ear every day that she was already his brother’s fiancée. This was to ensure that in the future...his brother Owen would have a lifesaving bag with him forever!
"Alright, alright, I’ll let you know then. About my brother’s abilities," Aman smiled.
"My brother’s power is not just a protective shield that he has given to you, but his lightning power can also enhance magic weapons. And the property of his lightning allows these magic weapons to absorb the demonic powers!" Aman said in earnest.
"Absorb the demonic powers?"
"Yes, as long as you use the weapon my brother has modified, you won’t have to fear killing the demonic beasts anymore because the toxic demonic spirit will be contained within the weapon itself. Of course, after using these weapons against the demonic beasts, they would become forbidden weapons. However, I can still use them against the enemies of the Setter family."
"Imagine how amazing it would be if we, the Setter family, could turn all our enemies into those contracted the demonic toxins, haha." Aman laughed maliciously as he contemplated this.
Even though his elder brother had ordered that the weapons, which sealed the demonic spirit, be buried, Aman thought he knew better uses for them than just storing away the demonic spirits.
After someone uses the weapon once, instead of having to discard it, using it to strike an enemy would restore it to normal because the demonic spirit would then be transferred to the person attacked!
