The Viltrumite Across the Worlds
Chapter 327: A New God’s New King
BZZZT!
Red light erupted from Jovian's eyes and shot straight toward Darkseid!
"Ugh..."
Darkseid's expression faltered as he felt Jovian's power.
"How did you become this powerful?!"
"But that still doesn't give you the right to invade this place!"
Darkseid glared furiously at Jovian as scarlet flames flickered within his eyes.
"I go wherever the fuck I want!"
"If I want to break into a place, then I fucking break into it!"
Jovian grabbed Darkseid by the head and violently tightened his grip.
Then he smashed Darkseid down onto Apokolips with a single punch!
BOOM!
A thunderous explosion erupted as Darkseid grimaced in pain.
BOOM!
Before Darkseid could even gather his thoughts, Jovian descended from the sky and landed on top of him. He hammered Darkseid with punch after punch, occasionally unleashing crimson beams from his eyes and blasting him at point-blank range.
"Asshole..."
Darkseid felt utterly humiliated. His eyes erupted with the crimson power of the Omega Effect. Two beams twisted through the air before slamming into Jovian and knocking him away.
Normally, anyone struck by Darkseid's Omega Effect had virtually no chance of survival.
Unfortunately for Darkseid, the Omega Effect didn't seem particularly effective against Jovian.
"Not bad..."
Jovian rolled his neck and looked at Darkseid.
"Uh..."
Darkseid's previously vicious expression froze.
He could tell that his attack had barely affected Jovian at all!
Even Darkseid was beginning to feel helpless.
"Don't panic! Our fight has only just begun!"
Jovian punched Darkseid squarely in the face. Then he seized Darkseid's head with both hands, forced his eyelids wide open, and unleashed an endless torrent of crimson light directly into his eyes.
"AAARGH!!"
Darkseid screamed as the blazing energy scorched his eyes.
"What's wrong, Darkseid?"
"Don't tell me you can actually feel pain too?"
Jovian smiled at the suffering Darkseid.
"What the hell is this power?!"
Darkseid covered his burning eyes. This was the first time he had encountered an existence as overwhelmingly powerful and immeasurable as Jovian.
"My power is called Spiral Power!"
"Ever heard of it?"
Jovian smiled at the Darkseid whose eyes were still burning.
"Spiral Power..."
"This universe contains a power like that?!"
Darkseid fell into thought. He had never even heard the name before.
"You're overthinking it. This universe doesn't have anything like Spiral Power."
Jovian smiled and shook his head.
"..."
Darkseid fell silent.
Then his rage exploded.
"You dare mock me?!"
Darkseid roared and punched Jovian.
"I'm not mocking you."
Jovian sighed helplessly as Darkseid's fist came flying toward him. He casually leaned aside to avoid it, then slapped Darkseid across the face.
"Ugh..."
Once again, Jovian knocked Darkseid flat on the ground.
"All right!"
"Now let's have a proper conversation."
"Part of the Great Darkness..."
Jovian grabbed Darkseid's head.
As he spoke, his power invaded Darkseid's body. Using this immensely powerful manifestation of Darkseid as a pathway, Jovian followed the connection toward Darkseid's true self.
"What the hell is happening?!"
Within an endless black expanse, Darkseid roared furiously.
"Turn the lights on."
With a soft click, the lights suddenly came on.
Darkseid stared at Jovian, who had abruptly appeared before him, and fell silent.
"You shouldn't have come here, Jovian! This is my world!"
As Darkseid spoke, his body suddenly expanded to an unimaginable size. In an instant, he towered through heaven and earth, becoming as vast as a universe.
He looked down from above at Jovian, who now seemed no larger than a speck of dust.
"Maybe. But even if this is your world, I can still defeat you!"
As Jovian spoke, his own body began expanding.
In an instant, he became just as enormous as Darkseid.
No.
He became even larger.
Countless universes glittered within Jovian's body.
Standing before Darkseid, Jovian coldly asked, "So tell me, who's the one who shouldn't be here now?!"
Then Jovian swung his fist and smashed Darkseid directly in the face.
"Ugh..."
The sheer force carried by Jovian's fist knocked Darkseid straight to the ground.
Darkseid lay there, barely managing to endure.
"Jovian, this is a trap!"
"If you absorb me, you'll be trapped here too!"
"This entire thing is a trap!"
Darkseid had never imagined Jovian's power would reach such an astonishing level. Lying on the ground, he coldly warned Jovian.
"Whether it's a trap or some elaborate scheme doesn't matter!"
"None of this has anything to do with you anymore, Darkseid!"
Jovian planted his foot directly on Darkseid's face.
"Asshole..."
Darkseid roared.
His pride told him that he had no choice but to fight to the death.
It no longer mattered whether he was actually capable of defeating Jovian.
This was a matter of dignity!
Darkseid unleashed every ounce of his strength and hurled Jovian away.
Then he charged straight at him.
"Goodbye, Darkseid!"
Jovian smiled at the charging Darkseid.
His arm transformed into a drill.
Then he thrust it forward with all his might.
...
The death of the New God brought the planetary war to a halt.
As Viltrumite gene warriors continued clearing the wreckage scattered across Apokolips, every surviving New God gathered together.
They surrounded the throne where an immortal god now sat.
"May we ask who you truly are now?"
One of the New Gods looked at the man seated upon the throne, whose eyes seemed unfathomably deep.
"I am myself."
The man glanced coldly at the speaker.
"Uh..."
His answer left the assembled New Gods silent.
The man sitting before them looked completely unrelated to Darkseid, yet somehow, at this moment, he felt remarkably similar to their great ruler.
They began wondering whether this might have been some contingency left behind by Darkseid.
"May I ask whether, given the current state of Apokolips, those of us who served as its officials should continue performing our previous duties? Are we still officials?"
Another New God questioned the man on the throne.
"Hmm?"
The man sitting on the throne gently raised his right hand.
Then he lightly squeezed two fingers together through empty air.
"Ugh..."
Instantly, the New God who had spoken felt an invisible force clamp around him.
His face twisted in agony.
Eventually, the New God collapsed to his knees before the man's throne.
"Let me ask you something. Are you giving me orders?!"
"Are you the chief god of this planet? Or are you the chief god of every New God in existence?"
The man on the throne stared at the New God writhing on the ground.
"I..."
The New God looked utterly terrified.
He repeatedly shook his head and stared fearfully at the man sitting upon the throne.
He was beginning to regret speaking at all.
Originally, even after the man on the throne had destroyed Darkseid, he hadn't thought much of it.
After all, the New Gods were an indispensable part of the universe. If every New God died, the universe itself would collapse!
But this new king seemed even more brutal than Darkseid.
He had merely asked a question, yet the man had immediately tortured him into submission.
"Not going to answer?"
"Then let me measure whether you possess the stature necessary to become a chief god!"
The man's eyes instantly erupted with crimson light.
The beams twisted repeatedly through the air before finally striking the trembling New God sprawled across the ground.
The crimson light drove the New God's body out of Apokolips and continued pushing him through space until it utterly annihilated him.
That crimson light was none other than Darkseid's Omega Effect. (DC)
"Go ahead. Ask whatever you want."
"I'm a peace-loving Emperor..."
"Just for today, I'll answer anything you want to know."
The man sat upon the throne and addressed the assembled New Gods.
"Uh..."
The New Gods looked at one another.
They seemed to be considering what they should ask the man, and more importantly, how they should ask it.
"But..."
"Once you've finished asking your questions, I imagine you can leave this world perfectly satisfied!"
"After receiving an answer directly from me, surely you'll be able to die without regrets! Am I right?!"
The man continued speaking from the throne.
"Uh..."
The New Gods who had been about to ask questions immediately shut their mouths.
"All right! Now answer me. Do any of you still have questions?!"
The man looked over the assembled New Gods.
"N-no..."
The New Gods exchanged glances before all shaking their heads.
None of them dared question Jovian.
"Excellent. I'm glad you all understand. That's wonderful..."
Seeing that nobody was willing to speak, the man nodded in satisfaction.
In truth, he had never intended to answer their questions in the first place.
Their decision to keep their mouths shut suited him perfectly.
"Very good..."
"Since none of you have any questions left, I'll be going now."
"If anything comes up, remember to come find me."
"I'm a kind and peace-loving man. I'll answer your questions immediately!"
With that, the man vanished from the throne.
Earth.
The man, Jovian, who had successfully ascended as the new King of Apokolips, returned.
Just as Darkseid had warned him with his final roar, after devouring Darkseid, Jovian could no longer descend into this universe with his true body.
No.
More accurately, from the moment Jovian devoured the Antispiral, his power had already become too great for him to live normally within this universe.
The universe was simply too fragile for Jovian now.
It was similar to a Kryptonian living on Earth, as though the entire world around him were made of paper.
Living within this universe now gave Jovian a similar sensation.
"What a peaceful world."
Jovian stood in the sky and gazed down at the blue planet beneath him.
After devouring Darkseid, Jovian intended to get some proper rest.
Then he had a few appointments to keep.
It was time to completely settle some old debts he had left unresolved.
"You're back!"
When Jovian returned to his office, he found Diana sitting inside with her long, beautiful legs crossed.
Looking at the absurdly leggy beauty, Jovian shook his head.
He had to admit that Diana ranked among the most beautiful women he had ever known. Diana was Princess Diana of Themyscira, better known as Wonder Woman. (DC)
"Looks like you gained quite a lot..."
"Let me take a good look at you..."
"My God! Did you actually become a god?"
Diana looked Jovian up and down.
After studying him seriously for a while, she spoke in astonishment.
"What's so surprising about that?"
"I was already called the God Among Men. Now I've just gained an actual divine position!"
Jovian casually shook his head.
As far as he was concerned, becoming a god or remaining something else made almost no difference.
"That's completely different!"
"As long as a being hasn't become a god, then no matter how powerful they are, they'll still have a finite lifespan. Eventually, this universe will erase even the greatest mortal beings!"
"But once you become a god, everything changes..."
"Becoming a god means you've crossed the boundary from mortality into immortality!"
"No matter how this world changes, you will remain immortal!"
Diana understood gods.
She knew the difference between divinity and ordinary mortal life.
"It makes no difference to me."
Jovian sat down behind his desk.
"Tell me. Why did you come looking for me?"
Jovian looked at Diana from his seat.
"No particular reason. I just wanted to warn you that there are still a lot of people in this world watching you and plotting against you. Be careful they don't catch you off guard."
"Forget it. I was a little worried about you before, but now that I've seen you've actually become a god, just pretend I never said anything."
Diana rose and began walking away on her long legs.
"Heh..."
"Thanks for the warning."
As Jovian spoke, crimson light suddenly flared within his eyes.
The instant Diana opened the door, the light shot past her.
It curved around the wall, flew down the stairs, left Kent Tower, and raced off toward an unknown destination.
The light moved as though it were alive.
It began hunting prey across the Earth.
Inside an ancient castle, several wealthy men were celebrating with glasses of red wine.
They were the financial backers behind the organizations opposing Jovian.
Their objective was simple.
Manufacture controversy, use that attention to manipulate the public, and control the direction of public opinion.
But today, their good times came to an end.
One crimson beam after another streaked across the sky, tracing the shape of a five-pointed star across the heavens above Earth.
"Thanks for reminding me. To show my appreciation, how about I help you get some exercise? A little physical activity is great for relieving stress and losing weight!"
Jovian reached out and grabbed Diana's hand just as she was about to leave.
