The Villain's Second Life

Chapter 13: The Price of Being Seen

  • Next Chapter

The first thing Ethan Vale heard after opening his eyes was Noah Blake arguing with a doctor.

"I am telling you, he is awake."

"He is unconscious," the doctor replied.

"He just opened his eyes."

"People open their eyes in their sleep."

"He looked directly at me."

"Some people sleep with their eyes open."

Noah paused.

"That is disgusting."

Ethan opened his eyes again.

This time, he made sure to blink.

The doctor noticed immediately.

"Stay still."

Ethan looked around.

He was lying in a narrow bed inside a white medical room. Soft blue light covered the walls, and several crystal instruments floated above him. Thin strands of healing magic moved across his body, sealing wounds and stabilizing his Mana Core.

The room smelled of herbs, metal, and something sweet.

Noah was standing beside the bed, covered in dust.

Elena Frost stood near the window with her arms crossed.

Adrian Cross leaned against the wall, his sword resting beside him.

Professor Lucian Gray stood at the entrance.

And at the far end of the room, Seraphina Crow watched Ethan in silence.

Ethan tried to sit up.

The doctor immediately pushed him back down.

"I said stay still."

"My condition?"

"Terrible."

"That is vague."

"It is also accurate."

Ethan glanced at the crystal floating above his chest.

The display showed a fractured diagram of his Mana Core. Most of it was dark, but two areas glowed with violet and silver light.

A third mark pulsed near the center.

Golden.

Ethan stared at it.

The doctor noticed.

"Do not touch that."

"What is it?"

"I do not know."

"You are a doctor."

"I treat bodies. I do not examine impossible entities attached to a patient’s soul."

"That sounds like an important distinction."

The doctor adjusted one of the instruments.

"Your Mana Core suffered severe damage. Several pathways are burned. Your physical body was close to collapse, and your soul shows traces of foreign interference."

"Can it be repaired?"

"Eventually."

"How long?"

The doctor hesitated.

"Months. Perhaps years."

Ethan frowned.

He had expected worse.

The doctor continued.

"That is if you stop using magic."

Ethan looked at her.

"For how long?"

"For the rest of your life would be ideal."

Noah folded his arms.

"See? That is good advice."

Ethan ignored him.

"If I cannot use magic, the damage will heal?"

"Some of it."

"And if I continue?"

"You may die."

"Eventually?"

"Possibly immediately."

Ethan considered the information.

Noah shook his head.

"He is thinking about trying it again."

"I am not."

"You are."

"I am considering the consequences."

"That is what you call planning to do it."

The doctor walked toward the door.

"You have been unconscious for six hours. The Headmistress wants to speak with you when you are stable."

"Where is Lucian Veyr?"

The room became silent.

The doctor glanced at Seraphina.

"That is not your concern."

"It is."

Seraphina finally spoke.

"Lucian Veyr is alive."

"Where?"

"In a secured containment chamber."

"Is he conscious?"

"No."

"Is the fragment inside him gone?"

Seraphina’s golden eyes narrowed.

"You remember the fragment?"

"I remember enough."

"That is dangerous."

"Everything about this situation is dangerous."

Seraphina walked closer to the bed.

The doctor stepped away.

The Headmistress looked at the golden mark over Ethan’s heart.

"You allowed a trace of the Observer to remain inside you."

"It was not intentional."

"Your intentions are becoming less important."

"That is a familiar argument."

"It should be."

Seraphina stopped beside the bed.

"Do you know what you did beneath the academy?"

"I closed the First Door."

"You temporarily severed one of its connections."

"That is close enough."

"No. It is not."

The golden mark pulsed.

A faint pressure moved through the room.

Every crystal instrument flickered.

The doctor stepped backward.

Ethan felt the presence behind the mark.

It was still there.

Not speaking.

Not moving.

Watching.

Seraphina lowered her voice.

"The Observer is not a creature that can be defeated through force. It does not invade worlds like an army. It studies them. It learns their laws. It waits until someone creates an opening."

"And then?"

"It enters."

"Through me?"

"Through whatever you become."

Ethan looked at the golden mark.

"Then I will not become an opening."

Seraphina’s expression remained unreadable.

"You believe you can control it?"

"I believe I can control myself."

"That belief is what caused the Final War."

The room became cold.

Ethan remembered the cities.

The armies.

The black banners.

He remembered believing that his will was the only reliable thing in the world.

He had been wrong.

But he had also been right about one thing.

Weakness invited betrayal.

He looked at Seraphina.

"Then tell me how to prevent it."

She studied him.

"You will remain inside the academy."

"I was already planning to attend."

"You will be placed under direct supervision."

"No."

"You are not negotiating."

"I am."

"You have no leverage."

Ethan glanced toward the door.

Behind it, several academy guards stood waiting.

He could feel the magical restraints attached to the walls. They were designed to suppress Saints, not beings like him.

But they were enough to kill his current body.

He could not fight his way out.

Not now.

Still, leverage did not always require strength.

"Lucian Veyr is connected to the First Door," Ethan said. "If you keep him imprisoned, the connection may remain unstable."

Seraphina’s face changed slightly.

Ethan continued.

"If you kill him, the connection may transfer to someone else."

"You are assuming the connection can transfer."

"I saw it happen."

Seraphina remained silent.

"Release him," Ethan said.

"That will not happen."

"Then give me access to him."

"No."

"Then let me speak to him through the containment barrier."

Seraphina looked toward Professor Gray.

"Can he be moved?"

"Not safely."

"Can the chamber be opened?"

"Not without risking another breach."

Ethan sat up despite the doctor’s protests.

"I do not need the chamber opened."

Seraphina looked back at him.

"What do you need?"

"A mirror."

The Headmistress did not respond immediately.

Then she nodded.

"Once you are medically stable."

"I am stable enough."

"You are bleeding through the bandages."

Ethan looked down.

A thin red line had appeared along his side.

He examined it.

"That is inconvenient."

Noah pointed at him.

"This is exactly what I have been saying."

The door opened.

A young academy assistant entered, carrying a silver tray.

He looked nervous.

"Headmistress, the council has arrived."

Seraphina’s attention shifted.

"Already?"

"They demand an explanation for the alarm."

"Tell them they will receive one."

"They also demand that Ethan Vale be removed from the academy."

Noah stepped forward.

"They cannot do that. He has not even started classes."

The assistant looked at him.

"The council believes he is a security threat."

Noah pointed at Ethan.

"He saved everyone."

"He also activated two ancient fragments and opened a connection to an entity beyond reality."

Noah paused.

"That sounds worse when you say it like that."

"It is worse."

Seraphina turned toward Ethan.

"The academy council is meeting in the western tower. You will be present."

Ethan looked at his injured body.

"I am not dressed."

The doctor stared at him.

"You are concerned about clothing?"

"I cannot attend an official meeting in a medical gown."

Noah nodded.

"He has a point."

Elena spoke from the window.

"I brought his uniform."

She held out a folded black-and-blue academy coat.

Ethan looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because you arrived wearing torn clothes, covered in blood, and carrying the reputation of a dead tyrant. It seemed necessary."

"That is thoughtful."

Elena’s expression remained cool.

"Do not misunderstand. I want the academy to judge you for your actions, not your appearance."

"That sounds almost kind."

"It was not."

Noah smiled.

"You are both terrible at accepting kindness."

Ethan stood.

The moment his feet touched the floor, his knees nearly gave out.

Noah moved to support him.

Ethan allowed it for exactly two seconds before pulling away.

"I can walk."

"No one said you could not."

"You were about to."

"I was about to prevent you from falling."

"I was not going to fall."

Ethan took one step.

His vision darkened.

Noah caught him.

"Of course."

Ethan waited for the dizziness to pass.

The golden mark over his heart grew warm.

A whisper entered his mind.

**You are weaker than before.**

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

He replied silently.

*And yet you are still inside me.*

The presence remained quiet.

Ethan smiled slightly.

The doctor noticed.

"What?"

"Nothing."

Noah groaned.

They left the medical room.

The academy corridors were crowded.

Students stood along the walls, pretending not to watch Ethan pass. Some whispered his name. Others looked at the black mark on his wrist or the golden light beneath his collar.

The rumors had already spread.

Ethan could hear fragments of them.

"He fought a Saint."

"He killed the Manticore with one spell."

"He is the reincarnation of the Black Sovereign."

"The Headmistress sealed him."

"He destroyed the eastern wing."

"He has a demon living inside his chest."

Noah leaned toward him.

"That last one is not entirely wrong."

Ethan looked at him.

"Do you want to remain alive?"

"Generally."

"Then stop commenting."

They entered a wide hall filled with floating screens.

The examination results had been displayed.

Ethan’s name appeared at the top.

**Ethan Vale — Special Admission.**

Beneath it were three results:

**Mana Core: Unmeasurable.**

**Resonance: Rejected.**

**Combat Evaluation: Incomplete.**

A fourth line had been added.

**Threat Classification: Under Review.**

Noah read it aloud.

"Under Review sounds better than Dangerous."

"Only because they have not made a decision."

Adrian stood near the screen.

His own results were displayed beneath Ethan’s.

**Mana Core: Advanced Apprentice.**

**Resonance: Ninety-four percent.**

**Combat Evaluation: Excellent.**

He looked at Ethan.

"You are still going to attend the academy after this?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"I have not found what I am looking for."

Adrian glanced at the golden mark beneath Ethan’s collar.

"What are you looking for?"

"The truth."

"That answer is too vague."

"Then ask a better question."

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Noah whispered:

"You two are going to become friends."

"No," Ethan and Adrian said at the same time.

Elena glanced between them.

"That was the first thing you have agreed on."

They continued toward the western tower.

The council chamber stood at the top of the academy’s oldest building. Its doors were guarded by two armored statues, each carrying a glowing spear.

Professor Gray placed his hand on the door.

The statues moved aside.

Inside, twelve people sat around a circular table.

They were dressed in expensive robes bearing the crests of noble houses, royal departments, and ancient magical institutions.

At the center of the room stood a large crystal displaying images from the underground chamber.

The moment Ethan entered, every face turned toward him.

The oldest man at the table rose.

He had white hair, a thin face, and a golden chain around his neck.

"I am Chancellor Alistair Wren," he said. "You are Ethan Vale."

"Yes."

"You are accused of causing a major security breach, awakening sealed relics, and exposing the academy to an unknown extra-dimensional entity."

"That is an inaccurate summary."

The Chancellor frowned.

"What part is inaccurate?"

"I did not expose the academy. The academy was already exposed."

A few council members exchanged glances.

Alistair placed both hands on the table.

"You are not in a position to be arrogant."

"I am aware."

"Then explain what happened beneath the academy."

Ethan looked at the crystal displaying the broken chamber.

"I cannot explain everything."

"Why not?"

"Because I do not remember everything."

"Convenient."

"Memory loss is rarely convenient."

A councilwoman in a red robe leaned forward.

"You expect us to believe that you are innocent?"

"No."

"Then what do you expect?"

"Accuracy."

The room became quiet.

Ethan continued.

"I was attacked by an entity connected to the First Door. The entity attempted to use Lucian Veyr as a vessel. I severed the connection."

"You also retained a trace of it."

"Yes."

"You admit that you may be compromised."

"I admit that something is watching me."

The councilwoman pointed toward the golden mark.

"And you think that is acceptable?"

"No."

"Then why are you standing here?"

"Because I am the person most capable of stopping it."

The Chancellor laughed without humor.

"You are a seventeen-year-old student with a damaged Mana Core."

"I am also the only person in this room who has directly interacted with the First Door."

That ended the laughter.

The Chancellor’s face hardened.

"You will be placed under permanent observation."

"Fine."

"You will surrender all access to restricted areas."

"No."

"You will submit to weekly examinations."

"Physical examinations only."

"You will not leave the academy grounds without permission."

"I will leave when necessary."

"You will follow every order given by the Headmistress."

"No."

The council erupted in protest.

Seraphina raised one hand.

The noise stopped.

She looked at Ethan.

"Why should we allow you any freedom?"

"Because forcing me into a cage will not remove the threat."

"And allowing you to act freely may make it worse."

"Then monitor me."

"We will."

"Good."

Ethan looked around the table.

"But if the Observer speaks through me, do not try to restrain me."

The councilwoman frowned.

"What should we do?"

"Kill me."

Noah turned toward him.

"Ethan."

Ethan did not look away from the council.

"If I lose control, hesitation will endanger everyone. Destroy the golden mark over my heart before the connection becomes permanent."

The room fell silent.

Seraphina watched him carefully.

The Chancellor’s voice became quieter.

"You are asking us to execute you if you become compromised."

"I am warning you."

The golden mark pulsed.

For one brief instant, every crystal in the chamber went dark.

A voice whispered through the room.

**He will not allow you to kill him.**

The council members froze.

Ethan felt the presence behind the mark awaken.

Not fully.

Just enough to listen.

The golden symbol over his heart glowed through his uniform.

Seraphina raised her hand.

A golden barrier surrounded Ethan.

The whisper vanished.

The room remained silent.

Ethan looked at the mark.

The entity had spoken through him.

It had wanted the council to doubt his words.

To make them fear him.

To isolate him.

Ethan understood the tactic.

He had used similar ones before.

The Chancellor slowly sat down.

"Your admission to the academy is approved."

Several council members protested.

Alistair raised his voice.

"He will remain under supervision. If he violates academy law, his admission will be revoked, and he will be transferred to the Royal Containment Division."

Ethan nodded.

"Acceptable."

The Chancellor looked at him.

"You will report to your assigned class tomorrow morning."

"Which class?"

The Headmistress answered.

"Class One."

Noah smiled.

"We are in the same class."

Ethan looked at him.

"Apparently."

Elena lifted her chin.

"I am also assigned to Class One."

Adrian crossed his arms.

"So am I."

Noah’s smile disappeared.

"This is becoming less enjoyable."

Seraphina turned toward the council.

"The hearing is over."

As Ethan walked toward the door, the golden mark pulsed again.

This time, a different voice whispered inside his mind.

Not the Observer.

Not the Witness.

Something older.

Something familiar.

**The third fragment is beneath your classroom.**

Ethan stopped.

Seraphina noticed.

"What is it?"

Ethan looked toward the academy’s eastern wing.

The third fragment was awake.

And it was not sleeping beneath a forgotten ruin.

It was directly beneath the place where his new life would begin.

His classroom.

Ethan smiled faintly.

"Nothing."

Noah closed his eyes.

"I am going to regret becoming your friend."

Ethan opened the council chamber door.

"Probably."

Behind them, deep beneath Class One, a sealed eye opened in the dark.

And the academy bell rang for the first day of lessons.
