The Villain's Second Life

Chapter 12: The Son of the Betrayer

The name echoed through the underground chamber.

**Lucian Veyr.**

Ethan Vale stared at the young man standing at the bottom of the stairs.

He looked no older than twenty.

His black hair was neatly combed, his pale face was handsome in an almost unnatural way, and his violet eyes carried a familiar light.

Not the same as Ethan’s.

But close enough.

The resemblance was not physical.

It was in the way Lucian stood.

His shoulders were relaxed.

His breathing was steady.

His gaze moved across the chamber without fear, measuring every person as though he had already decided how useful they were.

Ethan knew that look.

He had worn it for more than a century.

Noah Blake tightened his grip on his knife.

"You said you were Veyron’s son."

Lucian smiled at him.

"I did."

"How is that possible?"

"Through patience, blood, and a little forbidden magic."

Noah glanced at Ethan.

"That explanation answered nothing."

"It was not meant to."

Ethan stepped forward.

The second fragment pulsed inside his chest.

The Witness had entered his soul, but it had not fully merged with the Crown. Two different authorities now moved through his Mana Core.

The Crown carried command.

The Witness carried memory.

Together, they formed something dangerous.

Something Ethan could not yet control.

Lucian’s gaze fell to Ethan’s chest.

"You have absorbed the Witness."

"Yes."

"Then you remember."

"Some of it."

"Enough to hate my father?"

"I hated him before I remembered his name."

Lucian’s smile disappeared.

"That is unfortunate."

"Where is he?"

"Dead."

"Who killed him?"

Lucian looked toward Seraphina.

"She did."

Ethan turned his head.

Seraphina remained near the broken altar, her golden eyes fixed on Lucian.

"Is that true?"

"I killed Veyron after he opened the First Door," she said.

Lucian laughed.

"You stabbed him after he had already given you everything."

"I stopped him from destroying the world."

"You stopped him from becoming stronger than you."

Seraphina’s expression became cold.

"Your father was a traitor."

"He was loyal to someone who deserved loyalty."

Ethan’s fingers curled.

"Do not speak as if you know what I deserved."

Lucian looked at him.

"My father worshiped you."

"He betrayed me."

"He believed you had become too weak to complete your purpose."

"I had not become weak."

"You divided your soul."

"To seal the First Door."

"To hide your power."

Ethan stepped closer.

The Crown Fragment responded to his anger.

Violet light appeared beneath his skin.

The chamber trembled.

Lucian’s smile returned.

"There you are."

Ethan raised one hand.

The air compressed around Lucian.

For a fraction of a second, the young man’s body was forced to one knee.

The stone beneath him cracked.

Noah stared.

Ethan’s authority was still incomplete, but it was stronger now. The Crown and Witness reacted to one another, creating a pressure that ordinary mages could not resist.

Lucian’s expression changed.

He placed one hand against the ground.

A black mark spread from his palm.

The pressure around him broke.

The chamber shook violently.

Ethan narrowed his eyes.

That mark.

He had seen it before.

It was connected to the First Door.

Lucian stood.

"You are not the only one who has inherited ancient power."

"Your father gave it to you?"

"He gave me his blood."

"And the rest?"

"The Door gave me the rest."

Behind Lucian, the darkness at the top of the stairs widened.

A massive golden eye opened within it.

The pressure that filled the chamber was not mana.

It was something outside the laws of magic.

The students reacted immediately.

Elena raised her sword.

Adrian stepped in front of Noah.

Seraphina lifted her staff.

"Lucian," she said, "close the Door."

"I cannot."

"You opened it."

"I opened a passage."

The golden eye moved.

The darkness behind it rippled.

Lucian’s face became tense.

"Something else is using it."

Ethan felt the Witness inside his soul recoil.

A memory appeared.

The First Door.

The black space beyond it.

The enormous presence waiting outside reality.

The observer.

Ethan understood.

Lucian had not summoned the being.

He had only created a connection.

Something on the other side had answered.

"Veyron wanted freedom," Ethan said.

Lucian looked at him.

"He wanted to give the entity a body."

"And you?"

"I want the same thing."

The golden eye widened.

A thin line of black light stretched from the darkness toward Lucian.

It struck his chest.

Lucian screamed.

The black mark on his throat opened.

Dark veins spread across his face.

His body lifted from the ground.

Noah took a step forward.

"Is that supposed to happen?"

"No," Ethan said.

Lucian’s body twisted.

The ancient presence was trying to enter him.

It was using his blood as a doorway.

Seraphina raised her staff.

"Everyone, get back!"

She released a golden spell.

A circular barrier formed around the chamber.

The black light struck it.

The barrier shuddered.

Cracks spread across its surface.

Seraphina gritted her teeth.

"The seal is failing."

Ethan looked at the golden eye.

The thing beyond the Door was not fully present.

Only a small portion of its authority had crossed over.

If he destroyed the connection now, the Door might close.

But he did not have enough power.

The Crown could impose command.

The Witness could reveal weaknesses.

He needed both.

Ethan closed his eyes.

He reached into the Witness.

Memories flooded through him.

The First Door was not opened by force.

It was opened through recognition.

The Door needed a living authority to acknowledge the thing beyond it.

Veyron had used his blood.

Lucian had inherited the connection.

But the Door did not belong to them.

It belonged to the person who had first discovered it.

Ethan.

He reached deeper.

He saw the hidden memory.

The one the Witness had warned him about.

Seraphina standing before him.

A blade in her hand.

Ethan kneeling on the floor.

His soul had already been divided.

His memories were fading.

Seraphina had placed her hand against his forehead.

"Forgive me," she had whispered.

Ethan had looked at her.

"What are you doing?"

"Removing the memory of the Door."

"Why?"

"Because if you remember it, you will open it again."

Ethan’s younger self had laughed weakly.

"You think I would do that?"

Seraphina’s eyes were full of tears.

"I think you will believe you have to."

The memory ended.

Ethan opened his eyes.

Seraphina was staring at him.

"You removed the memory because you were afraid I would try to open the Door."

"Yes."

"You knew the truth."

"I knew enough."

"You allowed the heroes to kill me while I had forgotten why I was fighting."

"If I had told you, you would have returned to the Door."

"You could have trusted me."

"You had already killed millions."

The words struck the chamber like a physical blow.

Ethan looked away.

Seraphina continued:

"You had convinced yourself that only you could save the world. If I had restored your memory, you would have used the Door as a weapon."

"I would not have."

"You do not know that."

Ethan looked at Lucian.

The young man was still suspended in the black light, his body shaking as the ancient presence entered him.

Veyron had opened the Door because he wanted freedom.

Ethan had divided his soul because he wanted control.

Seraphina had erased his memory because she feared what he would become.

Every person in the chamber had made a decision based on fear.

And the thing beyond the Door was feeding on it.

Ethan raised his hand.

The Crown Fragment flared.

The Witness answered.

The two powers combined inside his Mana Core.

Pain tore through his body.

Blood ran from his nose.

The black lines on his skin spread to his neck.

Noah grabbed his shoulder.

"Ethan, what are you doing?"

"Closing the Door."

"Can you?"

"No."

Noah stared at him.

"That is not encouraging."

"I can still try."

Ethan stepped toward the center of the chamber.

The golden eye shifted toward him.

For the first time, the presence beyond the Door noticed him.

A voice entered the minds of everyone in the room.

It did not sound like speech.

It sounded like pressure.

**You opened the way.**

Ethan’s knees nearly buckled.

He forced himself to remain standing.

"No," he said.

The chamber trembled.

The voice returned.

**You are the key.**

"I am the lock."

The golden eye narrowed.

Black light erupted from the Door.

Ethan raised both hands.

The Crown imposed a command.

The Witness revealed the principle behind the opening.

The First Door did not lead from one place to another.

It connected two concepts:

Existence and observation.

The entity could enter only if something inside the world acknowledged it as real.

The black light struck Ethan.

He felt the ancient presence pushing into his mind.

It showed him impossible images.

A world without death.

A world without pain.

A world where every person obeyed his will.

A world where no one could betray him.

The vision was tempting.

Ethan had once wanted exactly that.

A world without rebellion.

A world without weakness.

A world ruled by one perfect law.

His law.

The Crown Fragment urged him to accept.

The Witness showed him the cost.

Thousands of empty cities.

Millions of silent people.

A world without freedom.

A world without life.

Ethan clenched his hands.

"I have already tried that."

The ancient presence pressed harder.

**You failed because you were alone.**

Ethan looked at Noah.

At Elena.

At Adrian.

At Evelyn.

At even Seraphina, who had betrayed him and saved him in equal measure.

"I am not alone anymore."

The black light began to break apart.

The golden eye widened.

Lucian screamed.

The entity shifted its connection from Ethan to him.

Lucian’s body cracked.

Black energy burst from his mouth.

Ethan moved.

He crossed the chamber and struck Lucian’s chest with his palm.

The Crown Fragment entered Lucian’s corrupted mana.

Ethan seized the connection.

For one second, the Door belonged to him.

The ancient presence pulled against his authority.

The force was overwhelming.

His Mana Core began to collapse.

Evelyn shouted:

"Ethan, release it!"

"If I do, it will enter him."

"Your body cannot contain it!"

"I know."

Seraphina raised her staff.

"I can sever the connection."

"Then do it!"

"I will kill Lucian."

Ethan looked at the young man.

Lucian’s eyes were no longer violet.

They had become golden.

He was not himself anymore.

The entity had taken control.

Ethan remembered what Lucian had said.

My father worshiped you.

He had come to finish what Veyron started.

But he had not chosen this fate.

Ethan pulled the black connection toward himself.

The ancient presence entered his body.

For a moment, Ethan saw everything.

The darkness beyond the Door.

The endless space.

The countless golden eyes watching the world.

The First Door was only one entrance.

There were thousands more.

The entity was not one being.

It was a species.

A civilization beyond reality.

And they had noticed the world because of him.

Ethan screamed.

His Mana Core shattered.

The Crown Fragment and Witness Fragment fused together.

A wave of violet and silver energy erupted from his body.

The First Door collapsed.

The golden eye disappeared.

The black light shattered into fragments.

Lucian fell.

Ethan fell with him.

The chamber went silent.

Noah rushed toward Ethan.

"Elena, help me!"

Elena knelt beside him and placed her hand against his chest.

His Mana Core was barely visible.

It had not been destroyed completely.

But it was close.

Seraphina stood over Lucian.

The young man was unconscious, but alive.

Evelyn approached Ethan.

Her face was pale.

"You took part of the entity into yourself."

Ethan opened his eyes.

The world was blurry.

"Only a trace."

"That is enough."

"Then we will deal with it later."

Evelyn looked at the dark mark forming over his heart.

"You may not have a later."

Ethan tried to sit up.

Noah pushed him back down.

"You are staying there."

"I have things to do."

"You nearly died."

"I noticed."

"You cannot keep doing this."

Ethan looked at him.

Noah’s face was pale with anger.

"You cannot keep throwing yourself at every impossible problem and expecting everyone else to watch."

Ethan was silent.

Noah’s hands trembled.

"I thought you were going to die."

The words were quiet.

They carried no accusation.

Only fear.

Ethan did not know how to answer.

So he said the only thing he could.

"I am sorry."

Noah froze.

Ethan had not apologized to him before.

Not sincerely.

Noah slowly sat back.

"That is a strange feeling."

"What is?"

"Hearing you say that."

"It will not happen often."

"I figured."

Across the chamber, Lucian began to move.

Seraphina immediately raised her staff.

Ethan tried to stand.

His body refused.

Lucian opened his eyes.

They were violet again.

He looked at Ethan.

For the first time, there was no arrogance in his expression.

Only confusion.

"What happened?"

Ethan watched him carefully.

"The Door closed."

Lucian touched his chest.

"My father..."

"Dead."

Lucian’s face tightened.

"And the entity?"

"Gone."

Seraphina stepped forward.

"Not gone."

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed toward Ethan.

A thin golden mark had appeared over his heart.

It resembled an eye.

Ethan looked down at it.

The Witness had warned him that one memory was missing.

Now he understood why.

The entity had not been destroyed.

A fragment of its observation had remained inside him.

Watching.

Waiting.

Listening.

A faint whisper entered his mind.

**We see you.**

Ethan stared into the darkness above the chamber.

Then he smiled.

It was not the smile of Azeroth Veyr.

It was not the smile of Ethan Vale.

It was something between them.

"Then watch carefully."

Above them, the academy bells began to ring again.

And somewhere beyond reality, thousands of golden eyes opened.
