The Trash Guide Awakens: The Youngest General's Hidden Wife
Chapter 39: The Man Behind the General
Major General Raevor Veyr’s entire towering body went rigid beneath Rhaevia’s soft touch. Her slender fingers remained lightly wrapped around the fabric of his dark blue uniform sleeve, yet to the legendary 3S Sentinel, the gentle contact felt far more dangerous than any plasma weapon.
For several agonizing seconds, neither of them spoke a single word. The damaged medical bay remained in dead silence, broken only by the faint, electrical hum of shorted machinery and the erratic, unstable resonance vibrating between their bodies.
Raevor slowly lowered his dark, piercing eyes toward her hand.
Then, he lifted his head to look directly back into her glowing blue pupils.
"You’re wrong," he said quietly, his deep voice carrying a sharp, defensive edge.
Rhaevia did not withdraw her fingers, nor did she step back.
"Am I?" she countered smoothly.
"Yes," Raevor replied flatly.
He slowly straightened his broad shoulders, his military posture instantly rebuilding the impenetrable emotional walls he had maintained for decades.
"I’m not afraid," he declared, trying to restore his usual commanding authority.
Rhaevia studied his rigid expression in silence. She had just stepped through his deepest memories. She had felt the immense, suffocating grief and exhaustion he had buried for decades behind his military achievements.
"You are," Rhaevia stated. Her answer was soft, but it carried an absolute, unshakeable certainty.
Raevor’s jaw tightened until his muscles throbbed.
"Then tell me," he challenged, his dark eyes narrowing.
Rhaevia blinked once, her gaze remaining locked onto his.
"Tell me what you think I’m afraid of," he pressed quietly.
She remained silent for a brief moment, letting the heavy atmosphere settle between them.
"Being alone," Rhaevia whispered. Something flickered violently in the depths of his dark pupils. "Being completely unable to protect everyone around you," she added.
His strict expression hardened into stone.
"And being seen as something other than a weapon," Rhaevia concluded softly.
That final sentence struck him differently.
Raevor’s piercing gaze shifted away from her, turning toward the darkened diagnostic terminal on the far wall.
"For most of my life, I wasn’t treated as a human person," he admitted quietly. His voice remained strictly controlled, but the usual absolute authority of an imperial general had completely vanished.
"I was evaluated solely according to combat capability," Raevor continued, his tone turning hollow. "Mental strength. Synchronization efficiency. Battlefield performance."
His calloused fingers slowly curled into tight fists at his sides.
"Every single promotion made me more valuable to the Imperial High Command," he said, pausing briefly. "Every victory made me more useful to the Empire."
Rhaevia listened in quiet silence, watching the formidable commander unravel before her.
"People stopped asking what I wanted a long time ago," Raevor murmured, a bitter, almost imperceptible smile touching his lips for a fraction of a second. "They simply asked where I should be deployed next."
He took a slow, heavy breath. "Which battlefield needed me. Which soldiers could survive under my command. And which Guide could synchronize with me most efficiently to keep me fighting."
Rhaevia’s dark eyes softened completely.
"So that’s what you’re truly afraid of," she realized softly.
Raevor slowly turned his head back to look at her.
"I don’t want another Guide looking at me and seeing a military asset," he confessed, his voice dropping into a raspy whisper. "I don’t want someone measuring my worth by how useful I am to their war."
For the very first time in his thirty-five years of life, the legendary Major General seemed completely exposed.
There was no commanding officer standing in the room, no battlefield monster, and no undefeated 3S Sentinel. There was only a man who had spent his entire existence being valued strictly for what his power could accomplish.
Rhaevia slowly withdrew her hand from his arm.
Then, she took a deliberate step forward, positioning herself directly in front of his tall frame.
"Raevor," she called out softly.
His dark eyes lifted to look down at her pale face.
"I don’t care about your rank," Rhaevia stated calmly.
Raevor’s eyes narrowed slightly in surprise.
"I don’t care that you are a Major General," she continued.
Her clear voice was unhurried and entirely unbothered.
"I don’t care that you’re a 3S Sentinel," she said, her gaze remaining unwavering. "And I certainly don’t care how many galactic battles you’ve won for the Empire."
Something deep inside his guarded expression shifted.
Rhaevia raised her chin slightly to meet his intense stare.
"If you were an ordinary soldier with no title, no fleet, and no power, I would still see the exact same person," she declared firmly.
Raevor stared down at her in complete silence.
"Me?" he asked quietly.
"Yes," Rhaevia answered without a single microsecond of hesitation. "You."
The single word settled softly between them in the quiet medical suite.
Something entirely unfamiliar materialized inside Raevor’s dark pupils. It was not suspicion, nor was it cold military calculation. It was something far warmer, flickering to life deep within his soul.
"You don’t have to prove your worth to me," Rhaevia continued, her tone gentle yet firm.
Raevor’s heavy, uneven breathing gradually slowed down.
"You don’t have to protect me simply because I’m an awakened 3S Guide," she added, holding his gaze.
Raevor’s dark gaze deepened as he absorbed her words.
"And you don’t have to pretend you’re completely invincible," Rhaevia finished softly.
For several long heartbeats, the youngest General in interstellar history said absolutely nothing.
Then, he quietly asked, his raspy voice laced with rare vulnerability, "What if I am afraid?"
Rhaevia’s expression softened even further.
"Then be afraid," she answered smoothly.
She stepped half an inch closer to him, closing the remaining distance.
"But don’t face it alone," she added.
Raevor’s dark pupils contracted sharply.
The exact microsecond her words faded, their underlying mental resonance suddenly exploded outward in a blinding flash of golden and blue light.
[WARNING!]
A loud, mechanical alarm voice echoed sharply through the room. Both of them immediately turned their heads toward the damaged monitoring system on the wall. The distorted holographic display flickered back to life, clearing away the static visual noise.
[3S GUIDE-SENTINEL RESONANCE DETECTED.]
Raevor frowned slightly as the system began processing telemetry data. The numerical ledger on the floating screen began climbing at an impossible speed.
[68%]
Rhaevia’s dark eyes widened slightly at the reading. The numbers continued to jump rapidly.
[74%]
The physical air around their bodies began vibrating violently, smelling strongly of ionized ozone.
[81%]
Raevor instinctively reached out, his long fingers wrapping around Rhaevia’s hand. Their fingers intertwined completely, locking their neural pathways together. The mental shockwave surged again with terrifying force.
[89%]
A deep, reverberating vibration ran through the entire hull as the massive flagship trembled in orbit.
[94%]
Rhaevia felt Raevor’s powerful consciousness brushing against hers once more.
This time, however, there was no forceful invasion, nor was there any defensive resistance from her core. There was only complete, effortless synchronization, their opposing powers merging into a single circuit.
[97%]
Raevor’s dark eyes widened in absolute, genuine disbelief.
"That’s mathematically impossible," he murmured.
The numerical value climbed one final time.
[99%]
Then--
[100%]
Every single diagnostic system, light fixture, and monitoring display in the medical bay simultaneously went silent, the blinding lights snapping off.
Rhaevia stared up at the lingering, frozen display in the dim red emergency light. Raevor’s unshakeable expression became utterly frozen, his breath catching in his chest.
A final automated system message materialized across the primary screen:
[RESONANCE: 100%]
[STATUS: COMPLETE SYNCHRONIZATION]
[ERROR: SUCH COMPATIBILITY SHOULD NOT EXIST IN THE INTERSTELLAR ERA.]
Neither of them moved a single physical muscle. A level of Guide-Sentinel resonance considered theoretically impossible by imperial science had just been recorded between them.
And somewhere deep inside Rhaevia’s newly awakened core, something ancient and terrifying suddenly opened its eyes in the dark.
