Chapter 102: Volume 2, Chapter 102: Same Rules as Everyone

The whistle blew while Rayan’s left boot was still hovering between two patches of damp turf.

He had taken two steps inside Pedro Gonsalves, intending to offer an option in the half-space, but stopped when he noticed the left wing-back pushing high up the touchline. In that half-second of hesitation. Standing isolated in the seam between the opposition right-back and central midfielder both options vanished. The wing-back was forced to check his run as the passing lane closed, while Pedro was crowded out by the defender Rayan had dragged into his receiving zone. The ball bypassed Rayan entirely, rolled back to the centre-backs, and the drill broke down before it had started.

"Reset," Rui Amorim called, his voice carrying clearly across Pitch 1 in the humid Lagos air.

The drill mapped the left-inside-forward role within Sporting’s 3-4-3 system: move inside when the wing-back supplied width, hold the defensive line high when Pedro dropped deep, and attack beneath Victor Gyoker when he pinned the centre-backs.

On the next unopposed build-up pattern, the ball travelled from Coatez out to the left-sided central defender. Rayan turned his head, watching the ball’s trajectory instead of tracking the wing-back’s movement ahead of him. Magnetised by the play, he drifted three yards to his right, directly into the space Pedro was already occupying.

Pedro didn’t run around him or demand the pass. He simply stopped moving, folded his arms, and stood where Rayan had wandered.

"You can’t be in my pocket and ask for the ball," Pedro said, his voice completely flat as the pass hit his shins and bounced away.

Rui blew his whistle, walking three steps onto the grass with his clipboard held against his side. "Rayan. Who is responsible for width on the left when Pedro drops?"

"The wing-back," Rayan answered instantly.

"Correct. So why are you standing in Pedro’s space?" Rui pointed towards the restart marker. "Again."

Rui didn’t offer a word of encouragement; he simply signalled for the ball to be fed back to Coatez. Rayan trotted back to his starting mark, his chest tight with frustration.

As they set up for the third repetition, Salvador Almeida dropped two yards deeper in the central midfield pivot. He caught Rayan’s eye and pointed a firm finger towards the sideline.

"Stay there until he goes," Salvador instructed quietly. "I’ll find you."

The ball moved across the back three. Rayan twitched, eager to make his burst inside, and stepped off the line too early. Salvador received facing forward, saw Rayan clogging the half-space before the wing-back had committed, and deliberately turned his hips away. Instead of forcing the pass to Rayan, Salvador clipped a sharp lateral ball out to the right flank.

Rayan glared over his shoulder.

"Again," Rui barked.

On the next sequence, Rayan forced himself to stay glued to the left touchline. He watched the wing-back’s shoulder. The moment the wing-back triggered his overlap sprint, dragging the full-back with him, Salvador called out from the centre circle.

"Hold. Hold. Now go."

Rayan snapped his hips, exploding into the newly created pocket of space between the midfield and defensive lines. He received Salvador’s crisp, low pass on his back foot, perfectly placed in the open half-space with his body already angled towards the penalty box.

"Drive!" Rui shouted from the sideline.

Rayan took one heavy touch towards the box, watching a mannequin representing the recovery defender. He executed a quick step-over, looking to completely bypass the obstacle and angle himself for a clean shot.

Behind him, Victor Gyoker had already made his diagonal run across the front of the central defender, entering the prime scoring zone at maximum speed. By the time Rayan completed his second dribbling touch and lifted his head to cross, Gyoker had already run past the post, the window gone.

Gyoker didn’t slow down; he trotted past Rayan, his expression stern and sweat dripping from his chin.

"Early," Gyoker demanded, his tone clipped and unforgiving.

Rayan bit the inside of his cheek. He took the ball back to the starting line for the final phase of the pattern.

When the sequence repeated, Rayan didn’t try to beat the mannequin entirely. He took one sharp setting touch onto his right foot and drove the cutback into the six-yard box before the window closed. Gyoker met it on the stride, smashing a first-time finish into the bottom corner.

Gyoker turned, gave Rayan a single sharp nod, and said, "That one." He immediately trotted back to the centre circle without another word.

The session shifted into full-pitch defensive structure drills. As the opposition reserve side circulated the ball across their backline, Rayan sprinted out to press the right centre-back. Eager to make an impact, he approached in a straight line, leaving the passing lane to the interior midfielder wide open.

"Inside shoulder!" Sebastian Coatez boomed from behind him, his voice echoing across the facility. "Curve it!"

The entire defensive line was forced to shift three yards to compensate for Rayan’s missed angle. On the very next sequence, Rayan adjusted his approach, taking a curved arc that blocked the internal return pass while closing down the ball-carrier. The centre-back was forced to kick the ball out of play under pressure.

---

After dinner, Rayan sat in the recovery room with a cold compression sleeve wrapped around his left thigh, watching tactical clips on his tablet. He replayed the third left-side rotation, trying to see why the senior wingers always seemed to move one action earlier.

Duarte Faria walked past, holding an ice pack against his shoulder. He paused behind Rayan’s chair, glanced at the screen for two seconds, and picked up his water bottle.

"You keep arriving late," Duarte said quietly.

Rayan paused the video, looking up. "You watch me a lot."

Rayan stared at the paused screen, annoyance flaring briefly before he scrubbed the clip back five seconds. Duarte was right. He was reacting to where the ball landed, rather than anticipating where space would open two passes later.

His phone vibrated beside his leg. A text from Bia appeared on the screen.

Part of my architecture portfolio model collapsed in the car on the way to the studio. The entire timber frame for the roof is ruined.

Rayan began typing a quick reply: Training was rough today too. Senior tempo is crazy, I keep getting the positioning—

He stopped. He reread the message, deleted it and started again.

That’s terrible, Bia. What broke first? Did the main entrance section survive?

Her reply came back almost immediately.

The entrance is still solid, thankfully! Just the roof trusses. I can rebuild them tonight if I stay up. How is the camp?

Rayan smiled faintly, typing back: Hard. I keep finding the right space one second too late. At least the entrance survived. Send me a photo when the roof’s back on.

He set the phone down and looked back at his tablet. A small, translucent notification panel flickered across his peripheral vision.

Rayan dragged the build-up clip back to the moment before Salvador’s pass. The wing-back had already started outside him. Pedro had already pulled the midfielder away. Gyoker had already bent his run.

He played it again without watching the ball.
