The Smiling Death

Chapter 571: Serious conversation

"Sigh... seriously? I never expected something like this from you, Scarlett."

Amon sat on one of the sofas in the mansion’s sitting chamber, looking at her with genuine disbelief.

Scarlett calmly sat down beside him.

"Why not?" she asked. "You should have expected it. Don’t forget that I was raised in a noble family. Even though spending years in the village changed me considerably, I was still taught how noble society works."

She crossed her legs and continued in a matter-of-fact tone.

"If something benefits our family, strengthens our position, or secures our future, then nobles are expected to consider it. Personal feelings aren’t always placed above practical matters."

Amon stared at her.

"What kind of teaching is that? To accept your husband marrying multiple women for the sake of benefits?"

He shook his head.

"I’d never do something like that. It would be the same as asking you to marry another man."

Scarlett looked at him as though the answer were obvious.

"I understand that. Men generally don’t like sharing the woman they love."

"Exactly!"

Amon pointed at himself.

"That’s how men are. So shouldn’t women feel the same way?"

Scarlett frowned slightly.

"Perhaps. But society doesn’t treat the two situations equally."

"Why?"

She shrugged.

"I suppose much of it comes from how patriarchal noble society has been for centuries."

She paused before explaining.

"For noble families, the purpose of marriage has never been purely romantic. It’s also about bloodlines, alliances, inheritance, and producing heirs."

Amon listened quietly.

"If a man has ten wives, for example, all ten women could potentially give birth within the same period. A noble family could have several children within a few years."

She raised one finger.

"But if one woman had ten husbands, she could still only carry one pregnancy at a time. Even if every husband fathered a child, producing ten children would take considerably longer."

Amon’s mouth opened slightly.

"...That’s disturbingly logical."

Scarlett gave him a small shrug.

"It’s simply how noble families think."

She looked at him for a moment before asking more softly,

"Do you dislike the idea of having another woman?"

Amon hesitated.

"Well..."

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"I mean, as a man, I suppose having multiple beautiful women interested in me might be considered a dream by many."

Scarlett raised an eyebrow.

"But?"

Amon’s expression became more serious.

"Just because something sounds appealing doesn’t mean I would actually do it."

Scarlett watched him silently.

Then she asked,

"You don’t like Seraphina?"

Amon froze.

Scarlett continued calmly.

"You told me yourself that you were beginning to feel something for her when you were in the Demon Kingdom’s capital."

Amon swallowed.

She wasn’t wrong.

He lowered his gaze.

He had tried to ignore it.

Tried to convince himself that what he felt toward Seraphina was nothing more than friendship.

But after everything that had happened...

He couldn’t honestly say that anymore.

"I..."

His voice trailed off.

For several moments, he remained silent.

Then he lowered his head.

"I’m sorry."

Scarlett blinked.

Amon’s expression was unusually serious.

"I really am."

He clenched his hands together.

"I know how lucky I am. I have you. You’re amazing, Scarlett. You’re beautiful, strong, kind to me, and you love me despite all my flaws."

He gave a bitter smile.

"And yet I’m sitting here admitting that I might have feelings for another woman."

He sighed.

"Sometimes I wonder why you even chose someone like me."

Amon looked down at himself.

"I’m just a commoner. I’m nobody special. I’m reckless, I say stupid things, I act like a clown half the time, and I flirt with you using the most embarrassing lines imaginable."

Scarlett’s lips twitched slightly.

"That’s certainly true."

"Hey, I’m being serious."

"I know."

Amon sighed again.

"But still... how did someone like you fall in love with someone like me?"

It genuinely remained one of the greatest mysteries of his life.

Scarlett Bloodhart was a woman born into one of the most powerful noble families in the Vampire Kingdom.

She had been raised with every privilege imaginable.

She was beautiful, talented, powerful, and from a prestigious bloodline.

And somehow...

She had fallen deeply in love with him.

Amon still couldn’t understand it.

Scarlett stared at him for several seconds.

Then she smiled.

"It’s simple."

"Hm?"

"You should consider yourself the luckiest man alive."

Amon looked at her. Then nodded.

"I do."

"Why?"

Amon smiled faintly.

"Because I have you."

Scarlett’s expression softened.

But Amon’s smile soon faded.

"And that’s exactly why I sometimes feel like I don’t deserve you."

Scarlett reached out and gently touched his cheek.

"Don’t say that."

Amon looked into her amethyst eyes.

Her expression was calm, but there was warmth behind it.

"You don’t have to be perfect for someone to love you, I understand that much."

Amon remained silent.

Scarlett’s thumb gently brushed his cheek.

"I chose you because you’re you, Amon. Not because of your status, your bloodline, your wealth, or your strength."

She smiled.

"I fell in love with the idiot who makes me laugh in most embarrassing way. Very unprofessional."

Amon’s lips twitched.

"Idiot?"

"Yes."

"That’s not very romantic."

"It is when I’m saying it."

He chuckled softly.

Then his expression became thoughtful again.

"Still..."

He stared at her for a moment.

"Why do you love me so much?"

Scarlett’s smile softened.

"That’s a much harder question to answer. To be honest, I don’t know exactly."

She leaned a little closer to him.

"I used to spend most of my time alone, deliberately keeping my distance from the villagers. I built a wall around myself, I suppose. Maybe it was because I was never very good at interacting with people from other races or with commoners."

She paused and looked at him.

"But then you came along."

Amon tilted his head.

"What did I do?"

"You flirted with me."

"Cringily."

Amon nodded seriously. "Well... that’s true."

Scarlett’s lips twitched into a smile.

"You were hell-bent on talking to me and getting closer to me. Unlike everyone else, who would eventually give up when I ignored them, you shamelessly kept trying. Somehow, you managed to push your way past my walls and into my comfort zone."

She chuckled softly.

"Maybe... deep down, I had always wanted someone by my side. I just never tried to get close to anyone. Then you came along and tore down the wall I’d spent years building."

Her expression became gentler.

"And somewhere along the way... I started liking you. I don’t even know when it happened."

She leaned over and gently kissed his cheek.

Amon listened quietly, his expression becoming unusually thoughtful.

"I guess I really am lucky."

"You are."

Scarlett smiled confidently.

"And now, listen to me, my dear. Don’t ever look down on yourself."

Amon looked at her.

"You’re easy to understand. You’re more colorful than those boring, bland people around you. I can trust you without hesitation. And, most importantly, you’re very easy to handle."

Amon’s expression immediately changed.

"Hey! That last part was insulting. I’m not a simp."

Scarlett raised an eyebrow.

"Simp?"

"Usually, a man who constantly caters to a woman, hoping to gain her affection or romance, while giving her excessive attention even when she treats him badly."

Scarlett nodded thoughtfully.

"Hmm..."

She looked away, trying to maintain her usual calm expression.

"Definitely not you."

Amon narrowed his eyes. He stared at her face suspiciously.

"Are you sure you’re not trying really hard not to laugh?"

Scarlett covered her mouth and cleared her throat.

"Anyway."

She quickly changed the subject.

"Starting tomorrow, your mission is to seduce the granddaughter of the strongest human."

Amon’s eyes widened.

"Tch! I need some time to think about that."

Scarlett glanced at him.

"Oh?"

She smiled faintly.

"Then let me ask you something."

"What?"

"Would you be okay if she fell in love with another man?"

Amon instantly fell silent.

Completely silent.

His expression became stiff as he stared straight ahead. A few seconds passed. Then he swallowed.

"Of course I’d be okay with it."

Scarlett’s eyes narrowed. She slowly turned toward him and stared at his face.

Amon immediately looked away.

"...What?"

Scarlett continued staring.

"Nothing."

Her voice was calm. Far too calm. Amon suddenly felt a chill run down his spine.

"Why do I feel like I’m in danger?"
