The Sky Was Never Young: Vampire System Apocalypse
Chapter 55: Inverted Sovereignty: The Mastermind’s Canopy
The vibration of the impact rumbled through the polished marble beneath their bare feet. The sudden, violent intrusion tore through the suffocating tension of the room like a blade, leaving a sharp, ringing silence in its wake.
Vilucious did not flinch, but the muscles along his spine locked into rigid, lethal coils. The hypnotic, reedy warmth in his voice vanished instantly, replaced by a freezing stillness.
His fingers remained embedded in the fabric of Florianthum’s warrior garb for a fraction of a second longer; a stubborn refusal to release his prize, before his hand dropped away completely.
As the wood split inward, the anticipated rush of frantic guards and shouting commanders never came.
Instead, the threshold held nothing but a gaping, hollow dark. The silence that followed was heavier than the explosion. The corridor outside, usually lined with the stoic, armored silhouettes of his personal guard, was completely vacant. A thick, unnatural fog, smelling faintly of old dust and stagnant water, crept low across the threshold, spilling over the marble floor like spilled milk.
Vilucious stopped.
He did not pull a weapon; he didn’t need to. Slowly, his right hand rose into the air, his long, elegant fingers curving into a precise, commanding sign- a silent order for his hidden special forces to drop from the shadows and seal the perimeter.
Nothing happened.
The shadows remained empty. The stillness was absolute, broken only by the rhythmic, agonizing drip of water somewhere far down the hall. For the first time, the absolute certainty that radiated from Vilucious seemed to curdle into something sharp and volatile.
He didn’t call out. He didn’t lower his hand immediately. He simply stared into the dark, his jaw tightening until the bone showed white beneath his pale skin.
Florianthum stood frozen by the bed, the sudden vacuum of his attention allowing her to breathe, yet the sight before her offered no comfort. Her face contorted, a genuine mask of concern and deep confusion replacing her calculated innocence.
The lie she had just told him felt small, almost insignificant, compared to the eerie void at the door. If his guard- monsters trained to bleed for him without a sound- were gone, then whatever had broken through was entirely outside her calculations.
"Vilucious... wait..."
Her voice cut through the damp air, fragile and tentative. She took a half-step forward, her bare toes cold against the stone.
He didn’t acknowledge her. Not by a twitch of his shoulder, nor a glance from those piercing, silver irises. Her words were nothing but wind against stone.
His bare feet moved forward again, his gait shifting into a steady, predatory slow advance toward the ruined entrance. The casual elegance was gone, replaced by the terrifying, measured weight of a apex predator tracking a scent in the dark.
Every step he took away from her felt like a countdown, leaving Florianthum alone in the flickering, dying blue light of the hearth.
The shattered remains of the timber crunched beneath his bare feet, a sharp, brittle sound that echoed too loudly in the dead space.
Vilucious moved with an unnatural, fluid caution, his shoulder almost brushing the splintered doorframe as he eased his head past the threshold. He peeked into the great expanse of the outer corridor.
There was nothing.
No advancing army. No blood splatters on the walls. No bodies of his elite guard.
But the void that met him was wrong. The massive, vaulted royal corridor; a place structurally designed to be perpetually bathed in the golden, arrogant glow of enchanted braziers, was entirely pitch-black. Every single light had been snuffed out simultaneously.
The darkness wasn’t just an absence of light; it felt heavy, thick, and physically present, like cold velvet pressing against his face. The air carried a sudden, freezing draft that smelled intensely of wet earth and ancient iron.
"VILUC—"
Florianthum’s voice tore through the dark behind him, a sharp, ragged scream of pure instinct. But the sound cut off violently, suffocated in the middle of his name as if an invisible hand had clamped down over her throat.
A flash of genuine irritation flickered across Vilucious’s pale features. He turned back toward the room, his movements sharp, his voice dropping into a dangerous, dynamic freeze.
"Are you crazy? How many times must I warn you about using my name?"
The reprimand died on his tongue. The words withered in the air as his silver irises locked onto the space by the massive bed. The irritation evaporated, leaving his features frozen in a mask of rigid, absolute shock.
Beneath the dying blue embers of the hearth, the sight before him made the skin across his jaw tighten into stone.
Suspended from the high, vaulted ceiling directly above the luxury mattress was the corpse of his special security guard. The soldier was hung entirely inverted, his heavy armor clinking softly as his body swayed in a slow, sickening pendulum motion.
Dark purple blood- thick, luminous, and humming with a foul, ancient magic, dripped from his slit throat, pooling upward against gravity toward the ceiling before raining down onto the satin sheets below.
Holding the dead guard by his ankles was a massive, shifting entity made entirely of the same viscous, dark purple liquid. It had no face, only a glistening, undulating mass that seemed to drink the remaining light from the room.
From the main body of this hovering nightmare, a long, rope-like tendril of the purple slime shot downward across the bedchamber. At the very end of the tendril, the fluid had condensed, hardening and splitting into the unmistakable shape of a small, slender hand.
That liquid hand was clamped brutally over Florianthum’s face. The viscous purple fingers wrapped tightly around her jaw and nose, sealing her lips so tightly that her frantic breaths were reduced to weak, wet wheezes against the magic.
Her hazel eyes were wide with pure, unadulterated terror, staring at Vilucious over the edge of the slime as she tried to claw at the grip, her fingers slipping helplessly through the shifting fluid.
The creature gave a violent, wet tug.
"Bloody slave," Vilucious hissed, the words slipping like venom from between his teeth. His features hardened, shifting into a mask of pure, unadulterated ruthlessness.
The air around him grew so cold it burned, radiating an unspoken promise that he would hunt down the lineage of whoever did this and erase them from existence.
"Is that the best your royal tongue can manage?"
The voice cut through the freezing dark. It didn’t sound panicked; it was smooth, mocking, and intimately familiar. The intruder wasn’t visible yet, their form completely swallowed by the deep shadows near the massive window area.
Heavy, royal blue and golden curtains hung like monolithic pillars, blocking out the bleeding night sky and concealing whatever was lurking behind the velvet drapes.
Vilucious didn’t turn his head immediately. His silver eyes narrowed, tracking the exact vibration of the voice as it echoed off the glass behind the fabric.
The room grew smaller, the silence stretching taut like a bowstring ready to snap.
The tight, stony lines of Vilucious’s serious face suddenly shifted, melting into an expression of massive, terrifying danger.
The absolute fury that had rigidified his jaw just a moment ago gave way to a sound that shouldn’t have belonged in a room stained with his guard’s blood; a slow, low chuckle that vibrated deep in his chest.
It was a dominating, entirely unbothered sound that reclaimed the room’s air, turning the horrific intrusion into a petty amusement.
"Heh... heh-heh... Ahahaha." The laugh swelled, filling the vaulted space before clipping off instantly into a dead, lethal silence.
He tilted his head toward the heavy blue and golden velvet, his light grey irises gleaming with cold malice.
"Should I waste new curses on a worthless dog? One who crawls into my home... wait, my world, only to cower in the dark?" Vilucious said, his voice dropping into a smooth, ruthless purr that carried the absolute authority of a king addressing a peasant.
"Show yourself, coward, or die hiding."
The voice rippled from the deep folds of the velvet curtains once more, entirely unbothered by the implicit threat of death.
The speaker remained utterly hidden in the dark, their tone dripping with a mocking, casual arrogance that seemed to completely dismiss the terrifying presence of the king.
"Me? Crawling into your pathetic, trash realm?" The voice let out a sharp, incredulous scoff that echoed off the cold marble walls.
"Who do you think actually orchestrated all of this? Me? Please. You just dropped the joke of the year, Vilucious."
The casual use of his forbidden name hung in the freezing air, a direct slap to his royal authority. The silence rushed back in, thicker and more dangerous than before, as the unseen entity let the weight of the implication settle between them.
It was absolutely Cassius, executing this high-stakes trap entirely on his own. To anyone else, infiltrating the heart of the king’s fortress without an army would look like an act of pure, suicidal madness.
A major risk?
No. Cassius didn’t take risks based on luck; there was always a hidden, devastating factor at play.
The pieces of the puzzle began to click into place. In the royal open courtyard, Cassius had spoken an entire, deliberate sentence about Ezaily’s mother. Yet, despite Vilucious possessing the captured soul of Florianthum: a tether that should have granted him absolute omniscience over everything connected to her- the great king had heard absolutely nothing.
Cassius wasn’t just another common vampire to be hunted and crushed under a royal boot. He was a master of silent, calculated devastation. If he was standing in the shadows of this high-security bedchamber right now, it wasn’t a desperate gamble.
It was the flawless execution of a genius mind.
