Chapter 719 - 719: The first day of the development trial (part 8)
Seeing those girl’s eyes cutely fixated on the boar meat, Aster couldn’t help but chuckle, to then say.
“You little gluttons will have to wait a bit, we’ll be eating boar’s soup with potatoes tonight so there is still more than an hour before dinner”.
Potatoes were one of the things Aster asked the snakes to obtain from the forest, luckily, they have seen racoons eating “something” that fitted the description they got form Aster, visited that area and came back with a lot of them.
Of course, Aster inspected them, because wild potatoes can be toxic, but they were safe for consumption, not to mention that they will be properly washed, peeled and boiled alongside the boar meat.
It was obvious by the disappointed expression on those girl’s pretty faces, that they wanted to eat the boar meat right now, in fact one of the junior disciples couldn’t help but cutely look at Aster as she asked.
“Can’t we grill it so that it’s done faster, senior brother?”, unfortunately for her, Aster’s answer was a negative one.
“Nope, but I’ll leave our “head cook” explain you why”, jokingly said Aster as he left the stage for Sarina who was supervising the group of girls that were washing, peeling and then cutting the potatoes, while big pots with water on them had started to produce steam after reaching the boiling point.
“This is meat from animals that don’t have spirit energy in them, forget about eating them, just the oily and raw smell it would produce by being grilled as it is, will make you lose your appetite for sure, you little girls are lucky that a certain someone went through the trouble of obtaining rosemary, thyme and bay leaf to balance its strong taste”, said the blond motherly woman with a slightly scolding tone.
Sarina looked like a mother scolding her little children who was about to cause itself a stomachache by eating some random thing they picked up in the wild, the world of mortals was incredibly different from the one of cultivators in many aspects.
Even the lowest ranked spirit beasts would have a decent taste without any additives, since their flesh had spirit energy in it, and those girls were used to that version of boar meat.
“Now, don’t be too harsh on them”, said Aster as he hugged Sarina from behind, wrapping his arms around her waist, which made the blond motherly woman slightly blush, but she still added.
“Humph, this is also your fault for spoiling them a bit too much”, mumbled Sarina, resulting in Aster softly laughing, both her strict and gentle “modes” had their respective charms, certainly Aster did go out of his way to get the aromatic herbs that would make the boar meat easier to eat for the inexperienced stomachs of those girls, thyme and bay leaf were in the list of things that he gave to the snakes, but rosemary isn’t commonly found in forests, as it prefers sunny and rocky places with drier environment than a forest.
Meaning that to obtain it, they had to go all the way to the rocky area at the other side of the forest, that was what Aster asked Mylene to find while he was mining the ore with Alice and the others.
The “official” explanation is that, the efficiency of the girls from the sect at their respective tasks would diminish if they had stomachache due to the shock that consuming this type of mortal food for the first time will bring to them, so smoothing it with aromatic herbs will help with the transition.
But to be honest, it wasn’t a priority and Aster could have decided to dedicate that time, to gather other types of resources, and yet he put the extra mile for the comfort of the group, that’s why Sarina said he was spoiling them a bit too much.
“Luckily they have you to teach them about mortal cooking”, said Aster as he pecked Sarina’s right cheek to then let go of her, since she had to return to her remaining tasks, otherwise dinner won’t be ready in time.
As to why Sarina had this knowledge, her planet is around the same level of one from a Star Cluster at the border of a low ranked Stellar System, since there weren’t cultivators at the later stages of the Transcending realms even, and mortals were a common sight.
But the main reason behind the expertise that Sarina was showing, is surprisingly none other than her father, the old general Sylas, he taught Sarina survival skills that aligned with the conditions of their planet, which included having to do with mortal ranked resources in emergencies.
Incapable of not smiling after receiving Aster’s praise, Sarina pouted to then push him towards the log cabin at the safest spot of the cap.
“I’ll call you when dinner is ready, don’t distract the cooks and go check the storage and those blacksmith girls”, she said, to which Kana who was hanging from Aster’s neck added.
“Yeah, me and the sisters from the Blacksmith peak prepared a surprise for big brother~”, it was impossible to refuse the little girl’s happy invitation, so Aster left the cooking station area, not without saying goodbye to the girls working there.
“See you later senior brother”, the girls helping at the cooking station giggled as they waved their hands at Aster, to then continue chopping and listening to Sarina’s instructions, as they had to prepare the portions of boar meat for the soup, with renewed spirits.
“I’ll also accompany… no let me go you damn ice princess!”, exclaimed Alice as she was dragged away by Aria, she was “cruel” to herself and didn’t stop to stay with Aster, just for the sake of keeping the lazy dragon princess doing something useful, that being said she still smiled in Aster’s direction as she left.
It’s worth mentioning that though in a smaller scale, the ones helping prepare food, were also sword users from the battle peak, who had accepted a mission related to their attack type manuals, to kill two birds with one stone, of course they went for more “normal” missions when compared to Aster, but the point is that they were being smart with their time and that idea came from Sarina, she is a sword user herself after all, though she didn’t trigger a special mission like it happened with Mira.
Speaking of which, seeing the ligress girl leaving towards the lake to continue supervising the girls that still had to complete their food gathering missions through fishing, Aster didn’t forget to tease her by saying.
“Ah right, tomorrow you’ll be coming with the exploration team, there is a lynx I need your help to communicate with”, he said with a playful voice to then enter the storage, but still managed to listen to Mira softly growling at him.
Leaving the grumpy ligress girl who didn’t refuse at the end of the day, aside, Aster entered the cabin log and was indeed surprised by how spacious it was, there were boxes filled with containers that had herbs and other resources, large improvised bookshelves made with logs using the same technique with which the fence was built, were the manuals that all the girls had bought from the exchange monolith, were safely resting, to prevent any accidents.
But that’s not all, there was actually a separation made right at half the area of the storage, where black curtains and blankets were used to completely block the view from what lied at that side, even the “door” was a black curtain.
“What is…”, the little girl couldn’t keep it to herself anymore and drew the curtain door to the side, revealing… a room?
There was a large base made with logs whose upper and lower faces were sanded and piled to form a large rectangle, then placed soft leaves and herbs all over it, to finally cover them with blankets, the result was a though rudimentary, still comfortable bed, besides that there was a bookshelf, and a small stand next to the bed, it was a simple but decent room.
Especially because there was another door adjacent to the room, which led to a real commodity for the wilderness, a bathroom, with a water tank at the corner near a strainer as well as a toilet bowl that was made with sculpted rocks and a seat of wood, covered with cloth, both connected to a septic tank which was buried into the ground below the bath.
Yes, there were septic tanks available in the exchange monolith, however they were pricey, luckily Aster was filthy rich in terms of low-grade merits and he told the girls he would refund anything they bought for the camp, by buying any necessities they might have, since those were transferable.
Only manuals, were mostly nontransferable after all, which is why there was a septic tank at each of the cooking stations since they had a to wash a lot of things, there and they didn’t want to contaminate the lake.
Interestingly enough, there was a clear separation between them and Wade group’s side, literally not even sound or anything they did, affected the girls from the sect.
They had confirmed it, when smoke could be seen raising from Wade’s side of the wall, but even with the wind blowing in their direction, they couldn’t even smell it, probably a measure taken to prevent any tries to play tricks from some participants.
Aster couldn’t help but be surprised at what those girls managed to do in such a short period of time.
“So, what do you think senior brother, we made this room for you~”, said a girl from the Yellow Anvil, to which Aster chuckled in response.
“It’s amazing, you even used mint leaves on the bed, I wonder which smart little girl had that idea”, he said as he looked at Kana,
The unmistakable scent of mint was permeating the room, giving it a fresh and clean accent to it, but there was a proper reason for their usage beyond that.
“Mm, I remember that the gardener at the royal castle used them to repel mortal insects from approaching the spirit herbs, so I gathered them for our room”, cutely said Kana, happy for the compliment.
“That being said and while I appreciate the intention, you should have built a bath for you all first”, said Aster as he patted Kana’s head, which made those girls blush on the spot.
“We asked miss Sarina and sister Aria and they said it was okay for us to bath here today, of course we’ll be quick to get in the way of senior brother’s resting time”, mumbled a girl from the Silver Anvil.
“Yeah, we wanted to lessen the weight on senior brother’s shoulders… to ask for a lesson in mortal blacksmithing!”, added another girl from the Yellow Anvil by gathering all her courage.
‘You cute cunning girls’, amusingly thought Aster, they “bribed” him with a room to ask him for a longer blacksmithing lesson, truth to be told, Aster was going to build a cabin for his family during the night today, for… a variety of reasons.
But those girls had done the job for him, which indeed loosened up his schedule enough for a longer blacksmithing lesson for them.
“I was already going to give you a small demonstration, but I guess now I will have to properly teach you a thing or two, fine you win ladies”, tomorrow before leaving I’ll teach you how to prepare the charcoal, and after returning from the exploration, we’ll have a live blacksmithing class, said Aster which made those girls smile on the spot.
Seeing the girls from the Blacksmithing peak getting praised and rewarded, the other girls from the Alchemy peak who had followed them to spend a bit of time with Aster, couldn’t help but feel a bit jealous.
They used almost all of their time for gathering, identifying and classifying type missions, they also helped store the resources properly, so seeing the girls from the Blacksmith peak getting praised and listening to them saying things like “Yeei, big brother Aster is ours tomorrow”, did make them feel jealous.
At least until Mylene who was laughing at the previous, interfered by saying.
“Don’t put such downcast expressions, we alchemists will have our time to shine as well, after all, a lot of daily necessities that need processing can’t be found in the exchange monolith, I don’t know about what reward you want from Aster though, so I’ll leave that to your imagination, come we’ll start right away”, said the pink haired girl as she showed them the container with the giant toad, while winking at Aster.
“Ahem, use the rest of today’s time to start making the bath for the whole group, I guess Erick and the other guys from the Wanderer sect helped digging the holes for the septic tanks and stuff like that, so team up with them to advance as much as you can before dinner”, said Aster.
“Yes, senior brother!”, with fire burning in their eyes, the girls from the blacksmith peak all answered in unison to then storm out of the cabin log/ house they had built for Aster, leaving only Kana and the little wyrm who had just arrived after “greeting” the girls from the sect who were the most curious about her.
“You look like you had a rough time”, jokingly said Aster to Espi, who happily hissed in response, even if entertaining all those curious girls was indeed a bit tiring, she was happy to be out in the open for everyone to see, that being said, being at Aster’s side was still her favorite.
“I still have to go check on the rafts and the lake’s situation, do you two little girls want to come with me?”, asked Aster, which was answered with two happy sounds.
“Yes~”.
“Hisss~”.
Both were positive answers, but before leaving Aster was drawn towards a barrel which was filled with perfectly sanded wood staffs and also smaller shafts, apparently those girls from the Blacksmith peak had already prepared to make spears and arrows in advance, they were that excited to get a lesson from Aster.
“They choose the perfect pieces of wood for them, that’s incredible, even I couldn’t have done it better with the improved sight that remained of my dragon eyes”, said Aster as he inspected a few of the objects in the barrels, which made the little girl exclaim.
“Ah I nearly forgot about it, that was Nym’s doing, when the sisters from the Blacksmithing peak were trying to find decent woof for weapon making, it suddenly started telling me which pieces of wood were good and I passed the message to them”, she said as she looked into her pocket to then take out a finger sized tree.
“Oh, is that true?”, asked Aster to the chatterbox Runic Oak, who nodded in response.
“Yeah, I didn’t want to be casted aside from the “pack”, so I looked for something only I can do, and found that even if I have to avoid returning to my usual size, because I won’t be able to move once I do it, I can detect and analyze anything wood related in a certain area around me, luckily Kana moved around the whole area in less than an hour, so the rest was as easy as breathing for me”, said Nym.
Leaving aside the strange way the runic oak put it, using terms of animals, for the group of the Myriad Occupation sect, that was a valuable skill.
‘So, it’s like Camila’s sensitivity towards metals, but for wood, it’s not bad, we can use it for tomorrow’s exploration then’, thought Aster to then say.
“In that case, you’ll be the advisor in charge of selecting the trees we’ll use for important things from now on, if you want to, we can “find” you later in this place to justify your origin, so you can be in the open like Espi”.
Surprisingly the runic oak shook its head as it answered.
“I’ll gladly accept the job assigned by the alpha, but I don’t want to be in the open yet, I can feel it, there is an important evolution coming my way, I’ll accept the offer after that, for now I can still accept missions with the help of Kana to take me to the monolith, because there is only one manual, I want to get there”.
The chatterbox runic oak must have its reasons, so Aster didn’t press the matter, he left the storage alongside those two little girls, and Nym who returned to Kana’s pocket, to then walk towards the lake.
There, Aria, Alice and basically all the girls he hadn’t seen yet, Agnes and Valentina included, were helping with the fishing, while half of the group from the Wanderer sect, Cayden included were working on rafts, while the other half could be seen carrying logs to help built the large bathroom for all the group’s use.
“Good evening, ladies, anything to report about the lake?”, asked Aster, to which Angela who received the reports from all the areas of the camp and directed them to the ones supervising each area, answered while accommodating her glasses.
“There are big fishes here, but nothing that could pose a threat to humans, we tried by dropping blood in different parts of the shore but nothing besides fishes the size of an arm appeared, we also saw some crabs here and there, I would say this lake is a part of the welcoming gift, like those animals that basically ignored us so long as we don’t do anything to them”.
“That being said, the fishes don’t approach the areas near the shore, it should have been made that way intentionally, to force the participants to develop rafts, boats and the like in order to get decent catches”, added the receptionist girl.
“I see, boats are a hassle to make, but rafts and canoes can be made in a matter of days with a bit of work, the girls from the battle peak will escort the girls from the Green, Purple and Orange Lotus factions to gather food at the outer part of the forest, while the exploration group will bring back the meat for dinner, but we’ll need the fish to have two decent meals per day at least, how are the nets doing”, said Aster.
Besides the rafts, in order to get enough fish for the more than two hundred members of the group, the nets were the next most important thing.
“It took me almost the whole day, but I taught a few elders and disciples from the sect how to sew, they only managed to make a small sized one of around thirty meters large per fifteen tall as the model, but they should be able to get two double that size by tomorrow”, said Valentina, apparently the purple lightning princess used complex yet everyday activities to improve her soul cultivation path abilities and among them, she learned how to sew.
Of course, she normally did it with telekinesis and a soul condensed needle, but the important part is that she had experience in that area, so she taught other girls the basics.
“Good, that’s beyond what I expected to be honest, I guess we’ll truly be “set” by tomorrow, which is good because… there is something we have to deal with by the fourth day at most, for both safety and the sake of our development”, said Aster, referring to the crazed bear they found at the rocky area.
“I heard about that from Mylene earlier, she told me you guys found some weird animals, that though lack even the slightest trace of spirit energy, were obviously not acting like mortal animal races”, said Eris, the group from the Rune Mastering peak, had already finished their mission by designing the initial draft of the camp’s print, so they were helping wherever they were needed as of current.
“Yeah, we have to kill it, because it lacks proper reason, I saw it topple trees that it could have perfectly avoided just because, not to mention that it hunts not only to eat but for fun… there was too much recently spilled blood in its fur, to be from just what it needed to eat and to make things worse, it descends from a bear that has eaten human flesh”, said Aster.
“Big brother, can’t you slash it down with a single move of your sword like you did with that tree?”, cutely asked the little girl, she couldn’t be blamed for asking that, Aster is Kana’s hero, she saw the legendary golden knight she only heard about in tales, in him back then, but leaving that aside, he is invincible in the little girl’s mind.
Also, her question had decent bases, cutting down a tree with that circumference in a single go, with a normal tool and just human strength, was basically impossible, but Aster did it, obviously thanks to the technique he learned from his attack type manual.
“Unfortunately, that’s not an incomplete technique, not only can it only be used once every three or so hours, but I can’t execute it while moving as of current, if it was an exchange of movements, I could indeed cut down an enemy with it, but it’s not effective in a real fight”, said Aster as he looked into the backpack to show them the machete he used earlier.
“Also, average iron tools, can’t keep up with the stress of the techniques that we will learn from the manuals, it’s just a theory but I think they are taking the toll for us, since this is a trial were development is being judged, so we need steel weapons for them”, he added.
The machete was basically destroyed, it didn’t crumble apart but it was full of cracks, so it was unusable, literally, since even its metal couldn’t be melted to make anything, as it was not allowed by the rules set up by the flaming board.
“That being said, with a bit of help from some of you, a mere bear won’t be a threat to us”, said Aster as he saw the worried expression on Kana’s pretty face, which made the little girl giggle in response.
“Mm~”.
