Chapter 718 - 718: The first day of the development trial (part 7)
To accelerate the bleeding process, after the initial cut on the neck, Aster basically removed the heads of the boars to then pass them to the snakes that were clearly hungry at this point.
“Here, these are yours as we previously discussed, you can start eating this for the time being, since I have to prepare the other parts”, said Aster as he placed the heads of the boars on the ground near the snakes, who started taking some bites of the meat and other tissues attached to them.
A few minutes later, Mylene returned with empty backpacks and a larger group of people, according to Aster’s demands, she brought back the original exploration group and elders from the battle peak.
The reason is simple, the girls from the battle peak will mostly be in charge of the hunting, of course for efficiency others will participate as well, but they will take the lead and the elders will be in charge of both supervising and teaching them the knowledge Aster was about to share with them.
“Since Mylene didn’t say otherwise, that means none of you has experience when it comes to butchering an animal, manually, but I bet some of you have done it or seen someone do it by using spirit energy before, right?”, asked Aster to which a few elders nodded.
The disciples and elders of the sect mostly come from relatively well-positioned families, and even the ones that have more average backgrounds, didn’t really have the need to do these kinds of odd jobs, but they have seen an uncle or worker of their family doing it once or twice before.
“In reality, the process it’s not as hard as one might think, you just need the correct tool, some patience and you’ll get decent results, feel free to ask any questions you have during the process”, said Aster as he took out a short thin knife with a curved blade and a hook at the reverse near its tip, that was a skinning knife, it was available in the exchange monolith.
Now, to be honest Aster didn’t find it entertaining to butcher an animal, but he did learn how to do it, just in case since he didn’t know much about the cultivation world back then, and it ended up being helpful.
“We’ll go downwards, so first make a shallow cut on the skin, we don’t want to cut the legs since they are being used to hang the boar, so make sure you just cut the skin and nothing more”, said Aster as he made a circular cut around the knee area of the boar’s hind legs.
“Then, use the hook to separate the skin of the legs in the middle and the blade to separate the skin from the flesh, not everything has to be cut, a few pulls here and there will be enough in some cases too, be especially careful to not cut the innards”, with skillful slashes of the knife, and pulls when he found it needed, Aster slowly but surely peeled the skin of the boar, all the way to the neck, the process on the lower part was similar a cut on the front legs and peeling it form there to meet with the rest, then with a final pull the boar was now “naked”.
It surely was a gory process, but even if the elders were originally young misses from cultivation families, they are from the battle peak and thus have had their share of fights before, they have killed to survive as well, so besides the normal uncomfortableness one would feel towards messy processes like these, they were fine.
“And now the important part, we have to remove the innards while making sure to not break them, because that could dirty or even completely ruin the meat we need, first make a cut at the base of the tail, we’ll be removing the whole area alongside the parts connected to it”, said Aster as he stabbed the knife around the base of the tail to then cut all the area of the anus and genitals, being careful to not sever what’s connected to it.
Then Aster used the hook of the knife to split open the stomach of the boar, as the knife made its way downwards, the organs slightly spilled out of the boar, but before advancing in that part, he pulled on the connection between that and the anus and genitals, only after having completely removed it with the help of the knife when it was needed, did Aster continue with the bigger organs.
Obviously, he didn’t cut what he pulled earlier, so it remained hanging from the intestines, the idea was to not let the contents of any of the organs spill, so carefully he started pulling from the sides, dragging everything slowly but surely, this part actually took a bit more effort, and Aster stopped midway to make a special mention.
“Be really careful to not break the gallbladder, if the bile spills, it’s an instant no go for the meat for us”, with that said and a last pull, all the guts finally came out and the boar was now ready to be cut in pieces.
Aster put the organs in a bucket and then repeated the process with the other boar, while the elders approached to observe in more detail, since they will be the ones doing it tomorrow for the disciples.
The second boar was processed way faster than before, but it still took Aster almost an hour to finish, the result were well sliced pieces of boar meat, with any undesired fat and bones removed from it, which was then separated in different containers.
The elders couldn’t help but marvel at the clean job Aster had done, it’s as if he was a skilled and experienced butcher, but the elders knew that wasn’t the case, on the other hand Aster is recognized for another aspect which can produce a similar result, his swordsmanship.
Also, they are not elders from the battle peak for nothing, by the time Aster finished with the boars, they all noticed something important.
“It was barely noticeable first, but by the end of it, there was a clear “style” incorporated in the slashes of that knife, could it be…”, mumbled an elder from the White Sword faction, to which one from the Black Sword immediately exclaimed.
“The “Slashing Specialist” mission, he took the hardest of the sharp slashing weapon type missions available in the monolith only for Perfect grade scorers!”.
Aster chuckled at the cute surprised reaction of the elders, that’s right he took a mission which looked virtually impossible to achieve, as it required one to make… ten thousand proper cutting movements in an hour on a physical target of your choice.
Depending on factors like experience, endurance, the target and many others, a person can make from 30 to 90 cuts per minute, so let’s take a middle point and say someone with experience and technique can make 60 proper cuts per minute that’s 3600 in an hour in total.
And that mission required the one challenging it, to do three times that, and as of current none of the participants had the capacity to use any of the techniques they had learned, so they would be lucky if they managed to get half of those cuts to be counted as “proper”.
The reward on the other hand was completely worth the trouble, because it was one of the few missions which had a reward that “cheated” the rules set up by the flaming board in the first place, if completed, the slashing specialist mission granted ten times the results that training in that hour will produce.
And that’s why the elders could now see a clear technique being incorporated into Aster’s slashes.
“I had experience in mortal swordsmanship already, so wielding a sharp weapon without any spirit energy or even technique is not as hard as it would be for others, of course the resulting cuts won’t be nearly as strong or skilled as they would be with meridians involved in the process, but they are still good enough to be counted for the mission”, said Aster, confirming the elder’s theory.
“And that’s not all I achieved by butchering those boars, but it will have to wait for when we get back to the camp, since it will be helpful for those girls to see it, for now help me put all the meat into the backpacks”, he added.
With curiosity shinning in their eyes, the elders nodded and proceeded to put the containers into the backpacks.
“This is quite a lot of meat, we barely managed to catch a few dozens of fishes with the improvised rods we made, though that will change once the net and raft are finished”, said an elder from the Red Sword, which made Aster bitterly smile.
Sure, what he obtained after processing the boars looked like a lot of meat, but that’s not really the case.
Aster obtained forty kilograms of meat from each boar, which should be enough for around a 130 people to eat a 300-gram portion of it, and the group from the sect originally was of 250 people, plus the five guys from the secondary group of the Wanderer sect and James as well, so it was a close call.
Especially because there are quite a few gluttons on the side of the Myriad Occupation sect, so there won’t be anything left of it after tonight’s dinner, luckily Aster had a solution to properly fill those girl’s stomachs and prepare them for the real tough day that was coming for them tomorrow, which involved the “hard” work done by the snakes.
Speaking of which, at this point the snakes had already eaten quite a bit of the meat that was left on one of the heads, and they still had the innards from both boars and another head to go, they weren’t picky when it came to food, unlike a certain little wyrm, who would rather eat fruit than those organs.
“Ah right, if you have these in your nest or if you get them from somewhere, I’ll buy them from you, these pairs are included as well, once you have eaten everything you can, bring the cleaned-up skull to me”, said Aster as he pointed at the tusks of the boars.
While he was more interested in the skin of the boars, the tissue of any dead boar the snakes might run into, would be decomposed at this point, so it won’t be usable to make armor at all.
However, the tusks of a boar are a kind of ivory, thus even if other parts of the boar have decayed, the tusks which in comparison with the bones lack marrow and blood vessels, would be fine for a way longer time, in fact thanks to the decay on the bones, they would be easier to extract.
And in case you wonder why does Aster want the ivory from the tusks of boars, the answer is simple, ivory is considered a “valuable” material and also has some decent applications in blacksmithing, thus it should hold some value in the exchange center and the snakes wouldn’t eat it as well, so it was a win-win situation since it was of no use for them.
As for why Aster didn’t mention it to the snakes before, that’s because it was not a priority target for the first day, but it would be a good trade after they had secured an stable source of food and other stuff they needed the most, which was covered by the snakes, judging by the amount they brought in just a few hours of searching, resources were abundant in the forest.
“Also, I’ll take all the feathers you can find, so long as they are relatively intact”, added Aster, the snakes had brought what seemed to be turkey feathers and while the eagle ones would be way better for arrows, the turkey ones also worked, he might even try to catch a turkey for dinner later.
But for now, with that Aster concluded his requests, which the little wyrm translated to the snakes who happily nodded as they took the heads of the boars and their organs which Aster kept in a sack that was tied to the snakes with a rope, to then leave to their nest, they had to be under cover before night fell, because the owls will start hunting at that time.
“Hissss”, Espi nodded at Aster, apparently the snakes did have some carcasses of boars in their nest, of course they hadn’t hunted them, they are non-poisonous snakes after all, but the lynxes didn’t eat everything of the boars they hunted, so the snakes took what was left and among them there were some heads which still had the tusks incrusted into them.
“Let’s get back, we still have a lot to do today”, said Aster to the rest of the group, they grabbed the backpacks and walked towards the exit of the forest, not forgetting to grab all the strawberries they could carry, on their way towards it.
…
Half an hour or so later, a camp appeared within Aster’s range of sight, the sun had already started to leave the sky which had gained a dark orange color, the girls from the sect had done quite a good job at preparing everything for the exploration team to come back.
“That’s quite a tall fence, it’s good to see that they did it smartly to not waste too much time in that mission”, said Aster as he nodded in approval, the girls from the sect had taken down trees, then cut a face on some of them, leaving them flat to use as a base.
They placed those in a rectangular shape around the area where they had appeared, with the wall at their backs so that they only needed to cover three sides with the fence, but that’s not all, they basically kept the trunks intact by just cutting some spaces on their extremes, so that they could be piled on top of each other without any need of nails to place them together, their weight did the job.
What’s more, this way all those trunks could be transformed in whatever they needed, at a later time, it was an especially good idea if they had to move their camp, though for the time being Aster hadn’t found any better area to live than this one.
Leaving the fence aside, those girls had built a large log cabin that was adjacent to the wall, that was the storage, a series of five campfires, one on each direction and one at the center, with “cooking stations” placed near each campfire.
And even more surprisingly, they didn’t use more time to build large huts, but went for a much simpler and efficient choice, by taking advantage of the fence they had already built, they placed some thick pieces of wood diagonally against the fence, and then covered their surface with branches that still had their leaves on them.
The result were triangular shelters that extended all over the extension of the camp, some were bigger while some were smaller, but overall, they could be considered safe shelters, because the fence blocked the wind for them and the multiple branches with leaves that covered the roof and the backside of the shelters, would prevent any rain from filtering inside.
“Not bad, I honestly thought they were going to try and build cabins, so I was planning to tell them to make these kinds of shelters once I returned, but it seems there was not need to worry about”, said Aster.
“Humph, you are not the only one that knows how to survive in the wilderness without access to spirit energy”, said a certain ligress girl who was coming from the direction of the lake, she had a large wood stick on her shoulder, from which many decently sized fishes were hanging.
“Well, I kind of expected you to know how to catch fish, but I don’t think these other arrangements have your characteristic cold on the outside but warm on the inside, touch”, jokingly said Aster, which made Mira softly growl at him, still she didn’t steal the merits of others and directly clarified the next second.
“I only taught those girls how to fish with a rod, the fence and overall design of the camp was done by that girl from the Heavenly Rose clan and the rune masters of the group”, she said referring to Eris.
Technically rune masters were in the worst possible situation out of all the professionals, alchemists could still make some simple things with herbs and other natural resources, blacksmiths had their agendas full for default, the same applied to fighters.
But rune masters couldn’t do anything regarding their professions without spirit energy, or so they thought until Eris called everyone and started explaining how arrays were born, it all came from organization and arrangements made for efficiency in the territories of nobles and large sized organizations.
Only later was the previous adapted for battle, by adding runes and spirit energy into the mix, and as a proof of it, once Eris explained the previous, a special mission exclusive for rune masters was triggered.
They had to make a design which maximized the benefits with as little effort as possible, and that’s the origin of the camp Aster was seeing as of current.
“The brothers from the Wanderer sect and I, had it easier, we just had to keep chopping trees down, and then tie some of them together hahaha”, Erick’s thunderous laugh, welcomed Aster back a second later, he and the people from the Wanderer sect, had been in charge of obtaining the wood needed for the camp, as well as the rafts.
As for the others, they were helping here and there, wherever they were needed, for example, continuous cutting sounds could be heard coming from the cooking stations, as Sarina guided other girls on how to chop the ingredients that the exploration, gathering and fishing teams had brought back up to this point.
“Big brother is back~”, with Kana’s “Warcry”, as she rushed towards Aster’s side, alongside Alice and the others, all the girls from the sect who were so focused in their tasks that hadn’t noticed Aster back already, turned to see him in unison.
“Welcome back senior brother”, they all exclaimed as they stopped what they were doing and proposed to got meet their admired senior brother, only to notice a newcomer, in the form of a pretty looking white snake.
Seeing the curiosity in the eyes of the girls from the sect, as well as the confusion in Kana’s pretty face, Aster chuckled to his insides as he introduced the “new” member to the group.
“She is called Espi, an amazingly smart spirit beast that will join us from now and onwards, be sure to properly greet her, because it’s thanks to her that we obtained this…”, he said as he opened a few of the backpacks revealing the containers that were full with meat.
“Woaaaah, that looks like something we would get served in a restaurant!”, said a junior disciple from the Green Lotus, they were expecting a gory mess cause by having to apply too much force to cut meat, and in a way smaller quantity than what they were looking.
And they weren’t the only ones, even Mira was taken by surprise this time, sure she caught more than half the fish the group had, but she was really bad when it came to cleaning and fileting said fishes, as the irregular pieces of fish that were being dried up to be consumed as rations at a later date, suggested.
“It’s good to see that you noticed the difference between properly processed meat and what an unexperienced person would normally get from butchering an animal, because this kind of result is what you’ll be aiming to obtain during this week, the elders from the battle peak will make demonstrations tomorrow, but for now, to celebrate having fulfilled the main goal of the day, which was obtaining iron ore, I’ll show you a little magic trick”, said Aster.
Under the interested eyes of the girls from the sect, Aster walked towards a tree whose circumference was around the same of a human’s waist, he then took out the machete from one of the backpacks.
And after firmly grabbing it with both of his hands, Aster slashed it at the tree, which made the girls from the sect gasp, they were afraid the machete would bounce back and end up harming their beloved senior brother, but the result was completely not what they expected.
A clean line appeared on the tree which then slid apart the next second, falling to the ground, making it shake a little, it was that small tremble what returned the girls from the sect to the real world.
“Can you use spirit energy again, senior brother?”, they asked in unison, to which Aster shook his head.
“No, that was the result of having had the resulting progress of an hour of intensive training in my attack type manual, multiplied by ten due to the “Slashing Specialist” mission, that was a purely physical technique”, he said to then add.
“Of course, a mission from the “specialist” series can only be taken once, so all the others of the same kind but for different aspects are now unavailable for me, but the result is worth it”,
The eyes of the girls from the sect were sparkling due to Aster’s explanation, in this trial where they were reduced to basically mortals, their senior brother had surpassed the limits on the very first day!
And the surprises will keep coming, but right now the only thing those girls could think about, besides the little wyrm who was being swarmed by lots of curious girls, was that boar meat which Aster brought back.
