The Rise of the Iron Wall!
Chapter 709: Second Win in a Row! Getting Out of Relegation Zone!
Then, just as Higo expected before, the rest of the game truly became his stage to show off. Werder Bremen threw away their little trick before, going for a desperate attack that would either kill them or get them what they wanted.
"Maxi, fuck it! Send a better cross, for God’s sake!"
"Don’t go there! Two opponents are waiting, switch to the left!"
"Pocket! Josh, move to the pocket!"
BAM!
Another shot was taken from a difficult angle on the left side, going straight to Higo’s grasp on the near post of his goal. Another chance was wasted, and this had already been the third one in the last 8 minutes. Compared to their stats in the first half, which only got them one shot on target, this definitely showed that they were starving for a goal.
Of course, Higo would not waste this chance to stall time here. The ball fell straight to his grasp, so he decided to put his body on the ground quickly, acting as if it was a difficult shot to handle. This way, it would take several seconds for him to get up, and the referee would be more lenient in letting the boy take a breather first.
Even though it was only ten to fifteen seconds, at least, this act alone was enough to drive Werder Bremen players batty.
Then, there were also the other Schalke players. It was ironic, honestly, that when Werder Bremen started to abandon their rough physical method earlier to chase the goal, Schalke picked it up immediately, using the exact same method to try to kill their opponent.
This was the iconic scene of using the opponent’s best weapon to deal with them, and Schalke did everything perfectly. Whenever Werder Bremen tried to build strong momentum, one or two rough fouls in a less threatening territory would be enough to shut them up instantly, which only put Schalke closer to victory for this game.
Now, even their head coach went berserk, putting three more attacking players on the pitch to add the intensity there. However, two could play at that game. When Frohling noticed that move, he also returned it by putting three new defenders on the pitch. Not only that, he even asked one player who was going to be replaced to act as if he got injured, killing more time and also hope for the home team.
Yeah, it was a dirty trick, but for a relegation team like them, they didn’t have any right to talk about cleanliness and honor. As long as everything was legal and the referee allowed it, they would use everything they could to cut off the opponent’s momentum.
Then, just as Frohling hoped for, the rest of the game turned into stagnation, with Schalke’s defensive line becoming the Great Wall of China itself. All the home team’s attacks were repelled, and even some that leaked into the end zone got blocked by Higo himself there.
Honestly, this was probably the best defensive performance that they had ever had in this season.
FWEEE! FWEEE! FWEEE!
After a long and exhausting fight, the referee finally blew the whistle three times, ending the game between two relegation teams here. The moment everything was over, all the Schalke players roared on the pitch, rushing to hug Fabian, who was the hero today.
"Goddamnit, Reese! That goal is a fucking killer!"
"Hell, yeah! The second win in a row!"
"Hey, hey, this should be our first away win this season, right? Damn, finally we have one!"
Even though it was just one win in this long marathon competition, everyone still celebrated it as if they had just won a World Cup final or something like that. After all, when they only got two in the last 15 games, they knew how hard it was to achieve one victory, so they learned how to be grateful the hardest way.
Of course, the same couldn’t be said for the Werder Bremen team. Poor them, their players rushed to the locker room immediately, their heads bowed deeply to avoid meeting with their fans. It seemed that they were too ashamed to face those who had their back, which only made the supporters get more frustrated, as boos echoed throughout the whole stadium.
Well, that was the least thing that Schalke cared about right now, as the more Werder Bremen suffered, the safer their position would be in this relegation battle.
Once they entered the locker room, the win they brought seemed to be the trigger for some more good news. Waldoch rushed inside, even panting heavily as if a wild dog had just chased him, making everyone curious. Before even the head coach said anything, the Polish man suddenly shouted something that would shake everyone else.
"DUS... DUSSELDORF LOST AGAINST PADERBORN! AUGSBURG LOST AGAINST WOLFSBURG! WE ARE GETTING UP TO THE 14TH PLACE OF THE STANDING!"
Silence followed as it took time for the players to process the news in their minds. However, once everything clicked, commotion broke inside the locker room.
"HELL YEAH!" Suat Serdar, the team’s captain, laughed crazily after figuring out what happened. "We finally get out of this fucking hole! Come on!"
"Yes! Yes! Yes! No relegation at all, we are still fighting for the top!"
"Come on, Die Königsblauen, we’re still fucking the best!"
It was clear that everyone was ecstatic right now. After all, the beginning of the season was so rough for them, with even DAZN reporters predicting that they would go down to the Bundesliga 2 next season. Now, with just two wins at the beginning of the year, they managed to climb up two spots on the standings, slapping anyone who dared to doubt them.
Frohling also chuckled here, feeling the enthusiasm growing in the air. Unfortunately, someone had to pour the cold water into their head, and as the head coach here, it was his task to be the villain.
"Well, I am so sorry for ruining your party here, but we still cannot put our guard down." His tone became solemn instantly, enough to silence the players there. "The distance is still close enough that anything can happen, and next week, we still have that impossible wall to climb, so don’t forget about that."
The players’ gaze turned solemn instantly as they also knew what kind of opponent they would face next week.
In the 18th game of the season, Schalke would have to face the leader of the league right now and also the biggest behemoth in this country, FC Bayern Munich.
