Chapter 479 - 453: The Thief’s Family Comes Knocking (2)

Yun Jiao chomped on an apple, sitting off to the side with her three older brothers to watch the show.

There was no need for them to get involved in this sort of thing. All they had to do was watch.

"Sis, want some sunflower seeds? I think we still have some salty ones at home."

"Yes!"

"What are you talking about? Nothing even happened to your family, did it? You black-hearted people just sent him to the police station! He’s supposed to support us in our old age. Now that he’s locked up, are *you* going to support us? I don’t care, you have to get my son out, or we’re moving in with you!"

With that, she plopped herself down on the ground.

Granny Yun pointed at them and cursed, "I’ve never seen such shameless people in my life!"

"Who’s shameless? Nothing happened to your family, you didn’t even lose a single penny. On what grounds did you have my son arrested?"

As for the other family, the one with the children, the woman was still sobbing.

"Cry, cry, cry, what are you, crying at a funeral? If you want to cry, go home and do it. What are you doing crying at our doorstep? Such a jinx."

Wang Mei didn’t hold back either.

"And you two old fossils, what do you mean ’nothing happened to our family’? No wonder you could raise a son who engages in petty thievery and gets into trouble. The apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree.

With those sharp, mean-looking faces of yours, it would be a miracle if you two sick-in-the-head old coots could raise a decent person. Your son was just unlucky to be stuck with irresponsible, miserable-looking parents like you. If I were him, I’d rather just die and get reincarnated!"

The old couple was furious. "You... you shrew! Someone like you is the one who couldn’t possibly raise a successful son!"

Wang Mei gloated, "Oh, I’m so sorry to disappoint you. My eldest son is a proper university student, one who got into the prestigious Qingbei, and he’s already graduated and working. He sends home dozens of yuan every month.

My second son is a craftsman who earns his own money and even helps support the family. And though my third and fourth sons are still young, we don’t have to worry about their future careers either.

They have dedicated masters to teach them. You two shameless old fools couldn’t catch up to me in a million years!"

Heh, she managed to show off her own kids while she was cursing people out.

But it was quite effective. The old couple was so angry their eyes were rolling back in their heads.

Unable to win the war of words, they resorted to playing dirty.

"I don’t care! If my son doesn’t come back, we’re living here and not leaving! Hey, everyone, come and see! These black-hearted people sent my son to the police station...!"

The other woman also hugged her children and cried pitifully. "SOB... What will my children do without a father? How am I supposed to live as a single woman with three kids?"

But what they didn’t know was just how much prestige Yun Jiao’s family held in the village.

A normally sharp-tongued auntie spat out the sunflower seed shell in her mouth.

"If the police station let criminals go just because some old folks, kids, and women came crying, how would the rest of us ordinary people survive?"

She rolled her eyes at the old couple. "A son like the one you two raised is better off not coming out to harm anyone else."

"What did you say? My son didn’t steal anything from *your* house, so what right do you have to meddle? Mind your own damn business. I bet someone like you couldn’t raise a good son, either—he’ll probably end up in jail too!"

That crossed the line.

That auntie was a formidable one, too. She rolled up her sleeves, walked over, and slapped each of the old folks across the face.

"You really thought I was a pushover just because I didn’t show my claws? Coming to our village to cause trouble and still acting so arrogant. Who gave you the nerve?"

"OW! She hit me! I’m going to report you! You have to compensate me...!"

Everyone was speechless. They were really trying to squeeze money out of every possible opportunity.

"Who hit you? Did anyone see anything?"

Wang Mei was the first to react. "Well, I didn’t see anything. Didn’t you two just go crazy and slap yourselves?"

The people around them chimed in, "That’s right, who hit them? You must have done it to yourselves."

"Who knows what kind of crazy fit they came to our village to throw."

The old couple never expected everyone in this village to be like this.

"You... you people are so unreasonable!"

"Oh, so *now* you want to talk about being reasonable? Take a look at your own behavior. You’ve got some nerve talking about reason."

Seeing that the entire village was siding with that one family, the woman with the three kids hugged her children and tried to make herself smaller.

The old couple was furious enough to die. They wanted to hit someone, but they were being completely played by the crowd.

Finally, the village chief stepped forward.

"Everyone knows why your son was arrested. It’s useless to come looking for this family. The police station said that he and his accomplice had stolen valuables from several homes and even injured someone with a knife. This isn’t the kind of thing where someone can just be released from jail because you say you’re sorry. You should leave now."

The old couple continued to act shamelessly. "We don’t care. They’re the ones who sent our son to the police station, so they have to be the ones to figure it out. Either get him out, or pay us. A whole person... you have to compensate us at least fifty thousand yuan."

This time, before Yun Jiao’s family even had to say a word, the villagers exploded.

"Pah! You really think you’re something special, don’t you? You shameless old fools! Fifty thousand? You won’t get fifty cents!"

"I’ve never seen anything so absurd in my life. Who do you think you’re threatening? Village Chief, they’re looking for their son, right? Let’s just send them to the police station."

The village chief thought the same.

"A few of you, send them to the police station for me. They won’t walk? Then carry them there!"

It was a joke to think otherwise. Yun Jiao’s family were the village’s benefactors. They had helped the village so much. If the villagers were to just stand by and do nothing, they would be less than human.

The woman with the children was frightened by the scene. She never imagined the people in this village would be so united.

’Isn’t it human nature to sympathize with the weak?’

Hugging her children, she quickly slipped away while everyone’s attention was focused on the old couple.
