"How much is that toy? I’ll buy it. Here, is one yuan enough for you?"
The stout woman ran over, holding out a one-yuan note toward Yun Jiao as if giving a handout.
Yun Jiao gave a slight eye-roll, then turned her back on the woman and went on playing.
"Hey, you useless little brat! I’m talking to you! Where are your manners? One yuan isn’t enough? Fine, I’ll give you five yuan for it."
"Who are you calling a useless brat?!"
Yun Linhai and the others were furious. Granny Yun pointed a finger right at the stout woman’s nose and cursed, "Aren’t you a woman yourself? Or what, are you some kind of freak, neither man nor woman? You’re the useless hag!"
Shen Yunlian swept Yun Jiao into her arms. "Take your money and get lost! We’re not selling it, no matter how much you offer!"
Wang Mei added, "If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. You’re just spewing crap. You may be dressed to the nines, but from here I can smell the stench on you. Get away from our Jiaojiao. We tried to be polite, but you’re just shameless."
"You... you people!"
The stout woman was so furious that her whole body trembled.
"You just wait!"
Ultimately, seeing that she was outnumbered, the stout woman didn’t dare start a physical fight.
"Pfft..."
The woman with red lips and curly hair let out a merciless laugh. The stout woman stopped in her tracks and glared daggers at her.
"What are you laughing at, you bitch? Who are you trying to seduce, dressed like that? I bet you flirted your way into getting those two railway police to come over, didn’t you? Shameless hussy..."
Clearly, the stout woman was now venting all her frustration on the woman who was by herself.
But this woman was no pushover. She leaped down from the top bunk, grabbed the stout woman’s hair, and—SMACK! SMACK!—landed two hard slaps across her face.
"You ugly sow! I’ve had it up to here with your whole family!"
No one had expected them to start fighting just like that.
Wang Mei said, "Well... should we go help break it up?"
She shot a look at Shen Yunlian, who understood immediately.
They said they were going to break up the fight, but they were actually going to take sides.
Putting on a grand show, Wang Mei let out a yell and rushed forward.
"Ladies, ladies, please stop fighting! This is a train, not your living room! Stop it!"
While she appeared to be pulling them apart, she sneakily landed a kick on the stout woman.
"Peace is precious, peace is precious! Everyone stop fighting."
Shen Yunlian ran up too, but she "accidentally" tripped, letting out a yelp as she crashed right into the stout woman.
"Oh, I’m so sorry! Someone’s foot must have tripped me. Ma’am, are you alright?"
As she got up, she gave the stout woman a vicious pinch.
’That’s for calling our Jiaojiao a useless brat!’
"OWWW!!!"
The stout woman’s husband rushed over to help, but he was blocked by Yun Linhai and his brother.
Yun Linhe said, "Our wives are trying to help. You’d better not go up there and try to take advantage of the ladies."
Yun Linhai nodded. "That’s right."
Since they were on a train, the fight didn’t last long before Wang Mei and Shen Yunlian pulled the curly-haired woman away.
"Alright, alright, miss," they said to the curly-haired woman. "She’s learned her lesson."
The stout woman wailed as she scrambled to her feet. "You... you all..."
"What’s going on here?! You people again!"
The stout woman let out a howl. "Officer, you have to help me! That madwoman attacked me, and those two bitches helped her!"
Wang Mei put on an exaggeratedly innocent expression. "Ma’am, how can you say such a thing? We were obviously trying to break up the fight. Everyone in the carriage saw it. You can’t just go around falsely accusing people."
Yun Jiao nodded. "Yeah, yeah!"
After nodding, she cracked open a sunflower seed. A small pile of shells had already formed beside her.
It was clear she had been watching the whole drama with great relish.
The family of three’s earlier behavior had truly been unpopular, so now everyone in the carriage backed up Wang Mei and Shen Yunlian, saying they were just trying to help.
Besides, the fight had only started because the stout woman had run her mouth first.
The railway police scowled. "Do you all want to get thrown off this train?"
"Officer, Officer, it’s all a misunderstanding..."
The husband stepped forward, all smiles. "My wife is just a bit impulsive. Don’t you worry, I’ll keep a handle on her. I won’t let her cause any more trouble..."
After he made repeated assurances, the railway police finally left them alone.
This time, the couple didn’t dare cause any more trouble, settling for glaring at Yun Linhai’s group.
Their child was still crying and fussing, and for the first time, the man lost his temper with his son.
"What are you crying for? I’ll buy you whatever you want when we get home! Why do you have to have something that belongs to someone else?!"
"Why are you yelling at him?" the wife snapped. "Our son is already upset, and now you’re scolding him? Have you no heart?"
But afterward, the couple was at their wit’s end trying to console their son.
The other passengers, annoyed by the noise, covered their ears, but not a single one stepped forward to help.
"Sister, have some candy."
At some point, Yun Jiao had sidled up to the curly-haired woman and was offering her a "White Rabbit" creamy candy.
The woman was tidying her hair and clothes.
"No, thanks. I’m sick of this kind of candy."
She said with a haughty expression.
"But since you’re insisting, I suppose I can force myself to take it."
Yun Jiao, who had been about to retract her hand: ???
"I won’t take it for nothing, though."
The woman took out a piece of chocolate. "Here. I bet you’ve never had chocolate before."
Yun Jiao blinked. "I have, actually."
"What? Then you definitely didn’t have the real thing."
Yun Jiao didn’t argue, simply sitting down beside her and starting to eat.
Unexpectedly, the curly-haired woman turned out to be quite the chatterbox. She sat down next to Yun Jiao and began talking nonstop.
Yun Jiao was happy to listen while she ate.
She had always enjoyed a bit of drama, provided it wasn’t her own.
She said her name was Wu Lan and she was on her way to join her husband at his military post.
"I’ve been married for two years and I’m still not pregnant, but my mother-in-law hounds me about it every single day. I’m starting to think there’s something wrong with her. My husband was only home for the first month after we got married, and he hasn’t been back since. If I actually did have a baby, it would probably scare her to death!"
The woman rolled her eyes as she spoke.
Wang Mei and Shen Yunlian, sitting nearby, overheard and nodded in agreement.
A baby really would have scared the old woman to death.
Wu Lan continued, "So when a letter came from my husband saying there was a spot for me to join him, I packed my bags and left without a second thought."
"I have no idea what life will be like at the post. If I do have a kid someday, I hope they’re as cute as you."
She stared at Yun Jiao’s face, liking what she saw more and more.
"I’m so good-looking, and say what you will about my husband, he’s got a handsome face. We should be able to have a kid almost as cute as you are."
Yun Jiao nodded, eating a peanut that her Fifth Brother had shelled and handed to her.
"Mhm, mhm. You can do it, Sister."
"But these clothes you’re wearing are so plain. Where do you live? I could make you a few outfits and send them to you. You’d look even better than a movie star."
Yun Jiao looked toward her aunts.
’Should I give her our address or not?’
Wang Mei, who had taken a liking to the woman, asked, "You know how to make clothes?"
Wu Lan lifted her chin proudly, then stood up and gave them a little twirl.
"This outfit I’m wearing? I made it myself. Pretty nice, huh?"
And they had to admit, it was different from the clothes you saw in stores.
The waist was tailored perfectly, accentuating all her best features. It gave her an air that was both radiant and refreshingly natural.
