The Natives of This World Are Fierce
Chapter 303 - 299: Fierce Battle at Lau Park
Chapter 303: Chapter 299: Fierce Battle at Lau Park
One of the Silent Knight’s most well-honed Basic Skills—Javelin Throwing!
HUFF... HUFF...
Peter breathed heavily, a wave of weakness washing over him. He tried to adjust, to relieve the immense strain on his body.
Many powerful Demons were incredibly alert. An attack this strong was usually only effective as a surprise, on the very first try.
To maximize its power, Peter had just unleashed his peak strength, even pouring a significant amount of Magic Power into the throw. His goal was to land a devastating blow, but it came at a considerable cost to his body.
However, compared to the Lead Spears and Steel Spears he used for training, these two Copper Spears felt surprisingly natural.
’It has to hit!!!’
On the highway, Niso heard the piercing whistle through the open phone line.
’It has to hit!!!’
He shared the same desperate hope.
Flying Demons were relatively rare. After arriving on Earth, the vastly different environment weakened a significant portion of them due to issues with energy consumption. But this wasn’t always the case, especially for those that relied on purely physical means of flight.
If the Demon gained air superiority, it would put both Niso and Peter at a major disadvantage.
Although Peter couldn’t see or sense the Demon, he could perceive the Copper Spears. Imbued with his Magic Power and aura, they were closing in at high speed!
His explosive start and sudden stop had left two patches of shattered pavement, one where he’d begun his run and another where he’d thrown the spears.
He eased the strain on his body and slowly straightened up, his expression grim as he stared at a fixed point in the sky. The whistling sound still echoed.
Despite hearing two warnings, Frank’s family remained, at a loss. Or perhaps, they were just unwilling to leave.
"Get in the car! Quick! If something happens, we’ll drive off immediately!"
Carl was the more vigilant one. As much as he wanted to see what happened next, he urged his family into the car.
BOOM! BOOM—
Seven or eight seconds after the Copper Spears flew, two massive booms echoed from the sky.
SCREECH... SCREECH...
Piercing, monstrous shrieks followed, echoing from the sky. Everyone in the city who heard them felt a sharp pain in their eardrums and couldn’t help but clamp their hands over their ears.
"What was that? What did Peter hit? What is that sound!!!"
Mani’s voice was tinged with panic, and Frank’s face had gone pale.
Carl rubbed his ears as he opened the passenger-side glove box. He pulled out a Lugger Pistol, checked the chamber and magazine, and then took out two fully loaded spare magazines.
CLICK-CLACK. He racked the slide, chambering a round.
The motion startled the rest of the Noeman family.
"Carl, what do you and Frank know? Who... who is that man, exactly?"
Old Noeman demanded of his two sons.
"He’s very likely the one you’ve been searching for all this time!!"
Carl replied with his habitual sarcasm, but his words lacked their usual sharp conviction.
’Should I keep hiding this from Old Noeman? But this was the dream, the truth, his father had chased for over a decade—that generations of the Noeman family had chased. It would be one thing if it was all fake, but now...’
Carl didn’t even notice that, in his own mind, he had stopped habitually labeling the "truth-seekers" in the Noeman family as lunatics.
After less than two seconds of thought, Carl decided against a phone call. Instead, he quickly composed a text and sent it to several numbers. To save time, he used only a few keywords.
"HIGH DANGER. MUNICH. SKY. UNKNOWN. SOS!"
...
After the two massive booms and the monstrous roars from the sky...
’A hit!’ Peter and Niso both thought with a surge of elation.
Now, with their minds focused entirely on the sky, both Peter and Niso were on high alert.
Highways in De Yi Country had no speed limits, but the city roads did. Niso’s car, however, blasted through the city entrance recklessly, charging into the urban area without slowing down in the slightest.
WHOOSH... WHOOSH... WHOOSH...
The whistling wind grew louder. A blurry shadow smashed through a thin layer of clouds in the sky.
SCREECH...
Everyone near Lau Park doubled over in pain, clutching their ears. This time the sound’s range was smaller, but it was even more intense and piercing.
THWUMP... THWUMP... THWUMP... THWUMP...
The violent beating of wings echoed continuously.
The dark shadow grew closer. Peter could now clearly see the two Copper Spears, one embedded in the Demon’s leg and the other at the base of a wing.
’Good! Excellent!’
"Niso! I hit it! It really does rely on its wings to fly! It’s going down!"
Peter roared into the phone, his body thrumming with excitement as he braced for contact. He had already shed his heavy winter clothes, revealing a powerful physique worthy of a bodybuilder.
’Frank had known Peter was strong, but not this ridiculously so.’
Without the heavy clothes to block it, the intense heat from his body warmed the air around him. As this superheated air mixed with the cold, a mysterious white vapor began to steam off his entire body.
"Hang on for thirty seconds! I’m almost there!"
Niso wasted no words on the phone. Besides that one sentence, all that could be heard was the roar of an engine.
Shortly after the call ended, the dark shadow in the sky loomed larger. The Demon descended, hurtling toward the ground with a deafening whistle.
ROOOAAAR—
The sound was no longer the piercing shriek from before, but a guttural, bestial roar. It had spotted Peter, its eyes filled with a vicious, hateful glare.
On the rooftop of a building just outside the park, a few young people at a party were rubbing their ears. One of them, eyes wide with disbelief, pointed at the sky and screamed.
"Quick, look! What is that?! Oh my god!"
"Holy crap! Get it on video!"
The Noeman family, being much closer, was even more stunned.
It was a gigantic monster with wings outstretched. Its body bristled with steel-like spines; even under its wing feathers were dense rows of sharp spikes. Its two legs ended in Claws that flashed with a cold light. Atop its long neck was a maw narrower than a crocodile’s but filled with even more densely packed teeth. A hooked tail, longer than its neck, whipped behind it.
Even before it landed, its sheer size, combined with the roars and the whistle of its descent, created an overwhelming sense of pressure for anyone who saw it.
If not for its disproportionately thick legs, some other avian characteristics, and a few unidentifiable traits, the monster might have been mistaken for a mythical Giant Dragon. As it was, however, the comparison didn’t quite fit.
Two gleaming Copper Spears were embedded deep, one at the base of its left leg and the other at the root of its right wing.
Black blood trickled down the exposed shafts of the Copper Spears.
ROOOAAAR—
The two spears prevented the monster from flying properly. The rhythm of its wingbeats was clearly off, causing its heavy body to plummet.
It was visibly struggling to stabilize itself. The moment it spotted Peter, its eyes blazed with fury.
Clearly, this was the culprit responsible for its injuries.
Its neck craned around, reaching the base of its right wing. It bit down on the end of the Copper Spear and, with a sickening RIP, yanked it free, unleashing a fresh gush of black blood.
"URRGH..." A muffled roar of pain echoed from the massive jaws clamped around the Copper Spear. Then, with a sudden jerk of its head, it flung the spear.
The Copper Spear shot toward Peter, letting out a sharp shriek as it flew.
Frank’s family, already struck dumb with terror at the sight of the monster, felt their hearts leap into their throats as the spear hurtled toward Peter.
"Dodge it, Peter!!!!" "Run, Peter!!!"
Leaning out of the car windows on either side, Carl and Frank screamed hysterically at Peter in the distance.
Enveloped in white vapor like some fantasy knight, Peter kept his gaze locked on the target, not moving a single inch.
THUD!
The Copper Spear slammed into the ground less than a meter from where he stood. The force of the impact kicked up a cloud of dust, and the long copper shaft quivered.
"A little off the mark!"
As he spoke, a powerful hand gripped the spear. He wrenched it from the ground and gave it two sharp flicks, sending the foul blood splattering away.
A faint stinging in his palm made Peter frown. He glanced at his hand but saw no sign of corrosion.
’The blood is poisonous?’
But he could sense his constitution could handle it, as long as he wasn’t exposed to too much. However...
Peter looked at the Demon in the sky. ’I don’t recognize it. It must be from a case file I’ve never seen. Or could it be a new species, one the Association has no record of?’
The two faced each other, sizing one another up. For a moment, the scene fell quiet.
’Fortunately, it doesn’t seem to be a Magic Creature. That’s a huge relief.’
The Demon in the sky tore the second Copper Spear from its left leg. It flung this one aside, sending it piercing through a nearby residential building and triggering a fresh wave of screams from within.
ROAR—
The dark figure was a blur. Despite its inability to gain proper lift, the Demon suddenly burst forward with unexpected speed, covering a hundred meters in an instant as it dived toward the ground.
WHOOSH...
Its wings blotted out the sky above Peter, whipping up a gale that made him stumble.
The left Claw blurred, appearing before Peter in an instant, large enough to engulf his entire body.
CLANG!
The Copper Spear blocked the fatal blow, sending him skidding back several meters. Ignoring the shattered, trembling web of his hand, Peter stomped, cracking the concrete beneath him. He swung the Copper Spear like a staff, lashing out at one of the Demon’s wings.
Perhaps due to its injured wing, the Demon, which should have soared past after its attack, ended up grounded by its own dive. This was an opportunity.
WHOOSH... The spear sliced through the air, then—CLANG! The impact rang out like metal on metal.
’Damn it, not enough force!’
Just then, the Demon’s massive head suddenly clamped down on the spear, and its tail became a blur.
An intense premonition of danger made Peter instinctively release the spear and leap backward with all his might.
SHIIING! A terrifying gash was carved into the concrete where he had just stood. The razor-sharp hook of its tail had barely grazed him as it swept past.
Before he could even regain his footing, the very wing he had just struck slammed viciously into him.
Although the spikes pointed away from him, parallel to the feathers, saving him from being impaled, their sharp tips still raked across his back, tearing his flesh open.
He had no time to even register the searing pain. The immense force of the wing sent him flying like a kicked ball. He tore through a hundred meters of air before—BOOM!—smashing into the base of a statue.
UGH... COUGH...
He coughed up a mouthful of blood. He struggled to rise but couldn’t. Just as a petal of the Flower of Life touched his lips, the dark shadow was upon him again, heralded by a ferocious gust of wind.
’Shit!!’
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!...
At the critical moment, Carl’s Lugger Pistol opened fire in a decisive, continuous burst. Its twenty-round magazine provided a steady stream of covering fire.
Between his superb marksmanship and the massive target, not a single shot missed.
The bullets sparked against the Demon’s hide. While the pistol rounds lacked significant kinetic energy, they were more than enough to get the creature’s attention.
’I owe you one.’
Peter seized the opportunity to scramble out of striking distance. The creature’s terrifying head turned, its gaze locking onto Carl in the distance.
In that instant, Carl froze, ice flooding his veins.
"Oh shit, it’s ignoring the gun! Frank, drive! DRIVE!"
Frank slammed his foot on the accelerator. The car was still picking up speed when the situation changed once again.
CRASH!
A Volkswagen sedan, moving at high speed, slammed into the Demon from behind, sending it staggering.
A burly man stood on the hood of the car. With a powerful push from his legs, the car’s frame nearly buckled in half as Niso’s body blurred, becoming a mere afterimage.
The muscles in his arm bulged to their absolute limit. The Magic Power stored within erupted, engulfing his right arm in ethereal, blazing flames.
"Die!!"
KABOOM!
Louder than the car crash, a scorching shockwave blasted outward.
Niso, in mid-air, landed a perfect punch squarely on the Demon’s head, sending the entire creature toppling over beside the statue of the ancient warrior.
