The Mirror Master
Chapter 225: The Drunken Man
Lu Bai stood with his sword, panting slightly. He circulated his Blood Qi, doing his best to mend his injuries.
All six were dead, but he didn’t relax in the slightest.
There was still one other person in the main hall!
Lu Bai’s sharp gaze swept across the room, locking onto the drunkard lying on a bench in the corner, fast asleep.
A worn-out Fanyang Hat covered his face. Faint snores escaped his lips and nose, and his chest rose and fell with each breath. He looked for all the world like a dead-drunk sot.
Although this man hadn’t made a move against him from beginning to end, it was more than a little strange that he was still sleeping soundly despite the massive commotion from the fight.
Lu Bai feigned serious injury, stumbling as he approached the man.
When he was near the drunkard, he suddenly raised his sword and slashed at the man’s neck!
The sword flashed like a bolt of cold lightning, silently slicing through the heavy air.
With a soft ripping sound, the thick brim of the hat split in two, falling limply to either side and revealing the face beneath.
The edge of the sword hovered over his neck, almost touching his skin.
It was just a hair’s breadth away from slitting his throat!
There was no startled reaction as he had expected, not even the slightest twitch.
Even the rhythm of his breathing hadn’t changed at all.
Through the dim light, Lu Bai could faintly make out a square-jawed face. A thick beard covered nearly half of it, with a high-bridged nose and a wide mouth below.
A glistening trail of drool even hung from the corner of his mouth, trembling slightly with each snore.
Lu Bai frowned slightly, lost in thought.
His last strike had been brimming with momentum and killing intent.
He was certain that if the man had been awake, he would have reacted somehow.
’Was I just being paranoid?’
Not even a True Master of the Martial Dao could have blocked that strike.
Yet this man had no guard up at all.
Just as Lu Bai’s Heart and Spirit relaxed slightly, the drunkard smacked his lips, turned over in his sleep to face the wall, and completely exposed the back of his head and torso.
’Looks like he really is just a drunk.’
Lu Bai shook his head slightly and retracted his Flying Sword.
Three Foundation Establishment Great Cultivators and three renowned Innate Martial Artists from the Jianghu were more than enough to assassinate an ordinary Innate Martial Artist.
But Wu Lan had witnessed his capabilities. To ensure there were no mistakes, there should have been a Golden Core Realm expert present.
This was why Lu Bai had been so wary of the drunkard.
Earlier, after Han Fei and his men left, Lu Bai had called out to the second floor of the station for this very reason.
If the enemy had superior numbers, with a True Master of the Martial Dao or a True Master Golden Core present, and without Ah Ming or the Cyan Cloud Sword at his side, Lu Bai had been prepared to ask Yu Daoxuan for help.
But when there was no response from the second floor, Lu Bai chose to handle it himself.
’It seems Wu Lan and the others still misjudged my combat strength.’
’They thought that without the Cyan Cloud Sword and a Tier Three Exotic Beast, my power wasn’t worth worrying about, so they sent these people to deal with me.’
Then another thought occurred to Lu Bai.
’If there really was a Golden Core Realm expert here, they definitely would have shown themselves after I killed the two Foundation Establishment Great Cultivators from Danxia Temple.’
’They wouldn’t have just stood by and watched me kill all six of them without revealing themselves.’
Just then, Lu Bai’s ears twitched. He faintly heard the sound of rustling clothes cutting through the air in the distance.
Lu Bai narrowed his eyes, his killing intent surging!
’That Border Army commander, Han Fei, is definitely involved in this ambush at the station!’
’In the middle of the escort, he suddenly took his men and left, abandoning me here.’
’It’s too deliberate.’
Han Fei circled around outside for a while before returning to the station with four soldiers.
"The stench of blood is so thick. It should be over."
"It doesn’t take this long to kill one Innate Martial Artist. It’s quiet inside; they must have left a long time ago."
The four men chatted casually.
"Leader Han, that guy had quite a few treasures on him."
One of them said sycophantically, "I got a look earlier. That Treasure Sword is probably a Tier Two Unparalleled Treasure Artifact. How rare."
"What, you want it?"
Han Fei shot the man a sideways glance.
"Heh heh."
The man rubbed his hands together and grinned. "It is a Tier Two Treasure Artifact, after all. If you have no use for it, Leader Han, I was brazen enough to ask."
"Hmph!"
Han Fei snorted coldly. "So you know you’re being brazen? Even for a Tier Two Treasure Artifact, once it reaches the Unparalleled grade, it’s a treasure rarely seen in this world. Do you think it’s something you can get your hands on?"
"Yes, yes, Leader Han is right."
The man didn’t dare to argue and just smiled obsequiously.
As they spoke, the group arrived at the station entrance and pushed the door open.
A thick stench of blood assaulted their nostrils.
Having stood guard on the border for years, Han Fei and his men were long accustomed to such a smell.
But seeing the scene in the main hall still made them gasp in shock and frown deeply.
The main hall was a complete mess. Several bodies lay strewn about, their deaths gruesome.
Some had their faces smashed in, making them unrecognizable.
Others were slumped at the base of a wall, bleeding from their Seven Acupoints, their eyes wide open in death.
One was decapitated, while another had his back pierced through.
"What happened here?"
"Where’s that Lu Bai? Did he escape?"
The four soldiers looked around, their expressions filled with shock and suspicion, and began to search the area.
"Leader Han, he’s over here. He’s dead."
A soldier went over to two bodies.
Lu Bai was lying on the ground, covered in wounds, his clothes soaked through with blood.
Jiao Ping was sprawled on top of Lu Bai’s body with a Flying Sword stuck in his back.
The blade was buried to the hilt, looking as if it had pierced straight through Jiao Ping and skewered Lu Bai underneath.
The soldier crouched down and held a finger under Lu Bai’s nose and mouth to check for breath.
There was none.
One soldier frowned and said, "Leader Han, this Flying Sword should belong to Lü Chen from the Xuanjian Sect. Could they have had some internal conflict and turned on each other?"
Another asked, "Then who killed Lü Chen?"
"They must have taken each other out."
"They fought to the point where not a single person was left alive?"
Han Fei’s brow was furrowed, his expression grave. He walked over to Lü Chen’s nearby body and examined it.
Lü Chen’s body was completely intact on the surface, but his internal organs had been pulverized!
’What powerful Inner Strength!’
Han Fei was secretly alarmed.
’Even Yan Fu, the ’Eight-armed Vajra,’ who’s renowned for his fist techniques, probably couldn’t produce this kind of force.’
’This shouldn’t be possible.’
Han Fei subconsciously looked up toward the second floor.
There wasn’t a single sound from upstairs.
Suddenly, a faint snore came from the corner, sounding exceptionally clear in the main hall.
Han Fei and his men tensed up, turning toward the sound.
The light was dim, but they could vaguely see the large man lying on the bench over there, fast asleep with his back to them.
Han Fei thought back.
’When we first arrived at the station, I think there was a drunkard sleeping over there.’
He hadn’t paid any mind to him at the time.
But now, he was the only living person left in the hall.
’Could everything that happened here be related to this man?’
Han Fei made a hand signal, motioning for the other four to surround the drunkard. He himself slowly drew the Long Saber from his waist and approached cautiously, his focus sharp and ready.
Just as he was passing by Jiao Ping’s corpse, something unexpected happened!
