The Mind-Reading Mate: Why Is the Lycan King So Obsessed With Me?
Chapter 592: Are You Even on Our Side?
After being separated for so long through those painful memories, Edmund and Primrose seemed unwilling to let go of each other again.
Even when they demanded an explanation from Leofric, Primrose remained comfortably seated on Edmund’s lap, with one of his arms wrapped firmly around her waist.
Meanwhile, Leofric and Lorelle sat on the couch across from them, forced to watch the couple’s shameless display of affection.
"Was the skull that thing possessed before..." Primrose glanced at the evil chest sitting on the table. "...Edmund’s skull? I mean, the Captain’s skull?"
Of course, they were technically the same person, but Primrose refused to think of that skull as belonging to her husband. Just thinking about Edmund’s head being separated from his body again was enough to make her heart hurt.
"I believe so, yes," Leofric replied with a nod. "That skull had a very strong connection to both of you, so I think this theory might actually be correct."
"But then... what was inside it?" Primrose asked with a frown. "It definitely wasn’t my Edmund’s soul."
She was completely sure about that because there was no way Edmund would ever force her to watch such painful memories. If his soul had truly been inside that skull, Primrose knew exactly what he would have done.
Her husband would have buried those memories as deeply as possible and never allowed her to see them. He would rather carry all that pain by himself than let Primrose suffer because of it.
"I’m still not sure what it was, but I’ll try to find more clues," Leofric said. After a short pause, he added, "As for the Cardinal, didn’t you see his face, Your Majesty?"
Primrose immediately gritted her teeth at the mention of that piece of shit.
She didn’t even want to think about him.
Without saying anything, Primrose turned toward Edmund and buried her face against his chest, as if simply hearing about the Cardinal had ruined her mood. Edmund naturally tightened his arm around her and gently rubbed her back.
Lorelle, who had been silently watching them this entire time, couldn’t help but think, [I’m glad they seem to be falling even more deeply in love with each other, but why do they have to do this right in front of my coffee?!]
Her eyes slowly moved toward the untouched cup in front of her. [And it’s not like I can even drink coffee anymore!]
In the end, Edmund was the one who answered. "He has a particular face that we know." He took a deep breath before continuing, "He looks like the Emperor of Vellmoria."
Leofric’s expression immediately changed. "The Emperor?"
"Yes," Edmund replied. His hand continued to rest around Primrose’s waist as he looked at Leofric. "They weren’t simply similar. As far as I could see from those memories, they had exactly the same face."
Primrose finally lifted her face from Edmund’s chest, although she still refused to move from his lap. "That’s why I didn’t want to say anything about it at first. I already hated that bastard Cardinal enough, and now I have to know that he has the same face as another bastard I hate."
Lorelle stared at her for a moment before slowly turning toward Leofric. "Could it be another reincarnation?"
"That was my first thought," Leofric admitted. "If Your Majesty and His Majesty were both reincarnated, then it wouldn’t be impossible for someone else from that time to be reincarnated as well."
Edmund stared at Leofric for a few moments, his eyes slowly narrowing as something finally clicked in his mind. "Oh, cut the crap, Leofric. I know it’s you."
Leofric frowned, looking genuinely confused. "What? What do you mean?"
Edmund rolled his eyes and gave him an annoyed look. "You were the one I made that deal with."
"I don’t understand." Leofric simply shrugged, brushing off the accusation as if it meant nothing. "What kind of deal are we talking about?"
"The deal where you said you wanted to watch me suffer through one painful life after another in exchange for swapping my fate with my wife’s." Edmund’s gaze grew sharper. "You’ve been watching over me for centuries. There’s no way you know nothing about this."
Primrose finally lifted her head from Edmund’s chest and turned toward Leofric. Her expression immediately became suspicious as she glared at him. "Sir Leofric, are you even on our side?"
After all, Primrose couldn’t hear Leofric’s thoughts. Unlike most people around her, she had never been able to tell what was truly going on inside his head.
Edmund carefully moved Primrose from his lap and helped her sit on the couch before standing up. He then walked toward Leofric, his expression becoming more serious with every step.
"You knew all of this, but you never warned me. Why?" he asked.
[He must have recognized my soul and Primrose’s soul from the very beginning. If he had told me about the Emperor sooner, I would have taken Primrose and Lazarus away a long time ago.]
Edmund gritted his teeth as another thought crossed his mind. [This bastard... I don’t even know if he’s truly harmless anymore.]
Leofric looked at Edmund, then at Primrose, before finally turning toward Lorelle, who was sitting beside him.
Unfortunately for him, Lorelle was also staring at him with the same suspicious look.
"Oh, not you too!" Leofric complained.
He quickly stood from the couch and began pacing around the room, clearly annoyed that everyone had suddenly turned against him.
"Why do so many people accuse me of being evil after I saved your damn asses?"
"What saving?" Edmund clicked his tongue. "We escaped those memories on our own after watching our past selves die."
Leofric immediately turned toward him with an offended expression.
"Really?" he asked sarcastically. "Do you honestly think the two of you would have returned safely if I hadn’t made sure your bodies didn’t rot while your consciousnesses were somewhere else?"
He pointed toward Edmund and Primrose before continuing, "Or if I hadn’t made sure your souls didn’t leave your bodies forever?"
Edmund and Primrose immediately fell silent. For a moment, neither of them seemed to know what to say.
Seeing their reaction, Leofric threw his hands up in frustration. "Dear Lord, Edmund! Do you have any idea how many rules I’ve broken for you and your sweet wife in this lifetime?"
