The Soot Veil took the battlefield away from them piece by piece.

At first Kael could still see the nearest basalt ridge, Darius’s dark silhouette leaning against it, the gray outline of Galahad crouched farther down the slope, and Sera standing with her bow lowered while she tried unsuccessfully to gather Mana Motes for a second Construct Arrow. Then the ash thickened until Darius became a shape without features. Another wave passed, and the ridge itself disappeared. What remained was a gray world no wider than Kael’s outstretched hand, hot enough that every breath through the cloth over his mouth tasted of stone, metal, and something bitter that made his throat tighten.

Nobody moved.

That was Galahad’s first command.

Not shouted. Shouting would have told the Ash-King exactly where to find them.

Kael crouched behind a stone that he could no longer see clearly and forced himself to breathe through the pain beneath his ribs. His right arm throbbed where flying rock had struck him earlier. His mana felt wrong inside the Caldera, not empty yet, but expensive, as though every bit of Ice had to push uphill before it reached his hands. He could use another large technique if he had to. That did not mean he should.

Somewhere to his left, Darius coughed once.

Kael immediately knew where he was.

Then hated that he knew.

If Kael could locate Darius from one sound, so could the Ash-King.

"Quiet," Galahad whispered through the ash.

Darius did not answer.

A dry scrape came from somewhere ahead.

Not claws.

Too small.

Ash sliding down stone.

Kael tightened his hand around his sword.

The sound stopped.

Nothing followed.

His heartbeat became too loud.

The Ash-King had done this before. Vance had warned them that once the creature buried the basin beneath its Soot Veil, it hunted rather than charged. That had sounded simple when explained beside a map.

It did not feel simple now.

A creature larger than a house was moving somewhere in front of them, and Kael could not hear it.

The System opened.

[Visibility: critically reduced]

[Thermal interference: severe]

[Draconic signature: inconsistent]

[Direct location confidence: low]

Useless.

Not completely.

Just not enough.

Kael dismissed it before the glowing text became another distraction.

A soft voice emerged from the gray.

"Iris."

Galahad.

No response.

Kael’s stomach tightened.

Then a pebble struck his boot.

He looked down.

Another pebble landed two feet to his right.

Then a third farther back.

A trail.

Kael understood.

Iris was moving without speaking.

He shifted carefully toward the stones, keeping one hand near the ground so he would not lose the line. His boot found the second pebble. Then the third. Five steps later, a hand caught his sleeve.

Iris.

She had wrapped gray cloth across her lower face, leaving only her eyes visible.

She leaned close enough that he could hear her whisper without it carrying.

"Air is moving wrong."

Kael looked into the ash.

"That seems normal now."

"No."

Her eyes narrowed.

"Something large is circling us."

Kael felt cold settle in his stomach.

"Direction?"

"Changes."

"Flight?"

She shook her head.

"Ground."

Worse.

The Ash-King had landed inside its own veil.

Iris placed two fingers lightly against Kael’s wrist, then pointed down.

Ash drifted across the ground around their boots.

Most of it moved north.

A thin line near the far side of the rock moved south.

Something large had displaced air beyond it.

Kael raised his sword.

Iris immediately pushed the blade downward.

"No."

He looked at her.

She tapped her ear.

Listen.

Kael listened.

At first, nothing.

Then he heard it.

A wet sound.

Slow.

Heavy.

Dripping.

Cinderblood.

The Ash-King was wounded.

Its right rear leg had been opened badly by Darius and Sera. Its side carried the wound Kael, Darius, and Vance had made together. One dorsal vent had been broken by Veyra. Blood should still be leaving the creature.

Blood.

Kael’s eyes sharpened.

Iris saw the change.

"What?"

He did not answer.

Kael crouched lower and extended his left hand toward the ground.

Blood Sensing.

He did not reach toward the Ash-King’s body.

That would have been absurd.

Even human blood inside a resisting living body remained difficult for him to detect precisely at range, and the Ash-King was neither human nor small.

But exposed blood was different.

Blood outside the body did not resist him in the same way.

Kael let his awareness spread through the ash-covered ground.

For several seconds, he found nothing except the faint residue from injuries already spilled around the battlefield.

Then something warm touched the edge of his perception.

Not heat.

Blood.

Dense.

Strange.

Heavy with something his ability did not understand.

One drop.

Then another.

Then a line.

Kael pointed west.

Iris followed.

He whispered, "Blood."

Her eyes widened slightly.

"Certain?"

"Exposed. Moving."

"How far?"

"I don’t know."

She accepted that immediately.

Good.

Kael adjusted.

The blood line moved.

Not directly toward them.

Around.

Hunting.

Iris placed one hand against the stone and used the smallest whisper of Wind Kael had ever felt from her. Not enough to clear ash. Not enough to reveal them.

Just enough to test movement.

The ash curling around her fingers shifted.

Her head turned.

"Behind."

Kael twisted.

Too late.

The Ash-King struck from the gray.

Its head appeared first, corpse-like scales materializing six yards away where empty fog had existed a heartbeat earlier. One sunken black eye fixed on Kael. The tiny white pupil contracted.

Kael threw himself sideways.

The jaws snapped shut.

Stone cracked where his legs had been.

Iris used Brush Step and became lighter for one burst, her body sliding over ash just ahead of the creature’s lower jaw.

Kael hit the ground, rolled, and came up with his sword already moving.

"Frostbite Edge!"

Cold gathered along the blade.

He cut at the nearest visible target.

The Ash-King’s cheek.

His sword struck matte charcoal scale.

Ice spread across the impact point.

The blade skidded.

No penetration.

The creature jerked its head.

That was enough.

Kael had already learned not to measure every attack by whether it drew blood.

An attack that changed the next movement mattered.

The Ash-King’s jaw followed him instead of Iris.

Good.

Kael stepped backward.

Pain stabbed through his ribs.

Bad.

The creature lunged again.

Kael Rime-Stepped.

Cold burst under his feet, carrying him away.

The Ash-King stopped.

Not missed.

Stopped.

Kael realized what that meant a moment too late.

It had learned the distance of Rime-Step.

The tail came from the opposite side.

Kael could not evade twice.

Darius appeared through the ash.

His sword met the tail at an angle.

Aura exploded against black scale.

He did not stop the tail.

He changed the height.

The massive limb passed over Kael’s head instead of through his chest.

Darius’s boots tore two trenches through ash.

His injured shoulder folded.

He grunted.

Kael reached him.

"You good?"

Darius answered through clenched teeth.

"Stop asking."

Better than no answer.

The Ash-King vanished again.

Not by magic.

By taking two steps backward into its own Soot Veil.

Kael’s Blood Sensing reached for the exposed wounds.

One line moved north.

Another west.

Then separated.

Kael frowned.

"Problem."

Darius adjusted his grip.

"What?"

"The blood is on the ground too."

The trail no longer gave them a single moving target.

The Ash-King was dragging old blood through ash, stepping across previous spills, turning Kael’s advantage into confusion without knowing Kael had it.

Or perhaps simply because the battlefield had become saturated.

Either way, Blood Sensing had gone from answer to another imperfect tool.

Darius looked toward the gray.

"Then use it with something else."

Iris reappeared.

"Wind."

Kael looked between them.

Blood.

Air.

Two incomplete pictures.

Together, maybe enough.

A distant whistle came through the ash.

Two short.

One long.

Galahad.

Iris answered by striking stone twice with the flat of her knife.

Not shouting.

Signals.

They moved toward him.

Sera found them first.

She emerged from the Soot Veil walking carefully with her bow raised and nothing nocked.

The empty quiver on her back looked almost wrong now.

Kael had seen it full for so long that the flattened leather seemed like an injury.

Sera looked at him.

"Can you find it?"

"Sometimes."

"Useful."

"Not enough."

"Iris?"

"Air."

Sera nodded.

No wasted questions.

Then she flexed the fingers of her drawing hand.

Kael noticed.

"Mana?"

Her mouth tightened.

"Nothing stays."

That was not entirely true.

Mana Motes flickered near her fingertips.

Tiny.

Unstable.

Gone as soon as they gathered.

She could sense them now.

That alone was new.

Creating the first Construct Arrow had nearly dropped her.

The second would not arrive because she wanted one.

The Ash-King made the problem immediate.

A shape moved through the ash behind Sera.

Kael’s Blood Sensing detected warm droplets at the same time Iris shouted from somewhere to the right.

"SERA!"

Sera did not turn.

She dropped.

The Ash-King’s claw passed over her back.

Darius moved in.

His sword struck between two talons.

Not to cut.

To open the hand.

The Ash-King’s claw flexed from the impact.

Sera rolled beneath it.

Kael attacked the injured wrist with Glacial Pierce.

Too ambitious.

The creature jerked away before his thrust fully formed.

His mana spent anyway.

Ice cracked uselessly across empty air.

The System flashed.

[Technique efficiency reduced]

He knew.

The Ash-King’s other foreleg slammed down.

Darius escaped.

Kael did not.

The ground struck him before the claw did.

The impact of the limb hitting basalt threw him onto his back.

His sword bounced from his hand.

Sera rose.

No arrow.

She reached instinctively toward the empty quiver.

Her fingers touched nothing.

The old reflex hit.

Kael saw it.

So did she.

Sera’s hand stopped.

Then she pulled it forward.

Mana Motes gathered.

Three.

Seven.

More.

The shape began.

Too fast.

The front of the Construct Arrow swelled unevenly.

The shaft formed crooked.

Sera’s breathing shortened.

"No."

She released the construct before it collapsed violently.

Pale fragments dissolved around her fingers.

The Ash-King raised its claw over Kael.

Darius was too far.

Vance came through the ash.

He hit the side of the Ash-King’s injured rear leg with his full body behind the strike.

The creature’s balance shifted.

Not much.

Enough.

The claw landed beside Kael instead of on his chest.

Black talons tore through basalt.

Kael rolled between them.

One talon scraped armor along his side.

Metal screamed.

His ribs exploded with pain.

He got out.

Barely.

Vance grabbed the back of his armor and dragged him another yard.

"Stop lying down."

Kael gasped.

"I was thrown."

"Excuses."

The Ash-King twisted toward Theron.

Vance did not retreat.

Kael saw anger in him now.

Not reckless anger.

Focused.

The dead fighter beneath the first landing remained somewhere inside the gray behind them.

The other missing Vanguard fighter remained unaccounted for.

Theron attacked the Ash-King’s damaged rear leg again.

One blow.

Two.

The second strike landed against the shaft of Sera’s final physical arrow still buried in the joint.

The arrow snapped.

The broken head stayed inside.

The Ash-King screamed and kicked backward.

Vance tried to move.

The damaged leg still struck him.

He flew.

Kael heard him hit stone through the ash.

"Vance!"

No answer.

The Ash-King turned toward the sound.

Then a knife struck its face.

Iris.

Not thrown to injure.

Thrown to draw.

The blade bounced from scale.

The creature’s eye shifted.

Iris moved in the opposite direction.

Wind lightened her steps.

The Ash-King followed.

One stride.

Two.

Iris ran along the edge of a broken shelf rather than away from it.

Kael understood.

She was leading it toward terrain too narrow for a clean turn.

Galahad understood too.

"DARIUS, LEFT! KAEL, HOLD!"

Kael hated hold.

He obeyed.

Darius disappeared after Iris.

Sera crouched beside Kael.

Her hand shook.

Not fear this time.

Mana strain.

"You tried too fast," Kael said.

She looked at him.

"I know."

"Good."

"That wasn’t helpful."

"I’m injured."

"Also not helpful."

Kael almost laughed.

Then Vance coughed somewhere behind them.

Alive.

Good.

Sera closed her eyes for one heartbeat.

Not longer.

When she opened them, Mana Motes were visible around her fingers again.

Less frantic.

She did not reach for all of them.

That was different.

She selected.

Kael could not understand how, but he saw the result.

The motes condensed in a thin line rather than a lump.

Sera thought about the arrow.

Not the target.

The arrow.

Straight shaft.

Balanced rear.

A point that did not wobble.

The Construct Arrow formed more slowly than the first.

Still rough.

Still translucent.

But less unstable.

Her breathing deepened.

She nocked it.

Kael looked toward the ash.

"No shot."

"I know."

She did not draw.

Good.

The arrow stayed.

For three seconds.

Four.

Then its rear began dissolving.

Sera tightened her fingers.

The structure held another second.

Then failed.

The Construct Arrow broke into pale motes.

Sera exhaled.

Not angry.

Learning.

"Five seconds."

Kael nodded.

"That seems useful."

"Not yet."

A crash came from Iris’s direction.

They moved.

The Soot Veil thinned slightly around the shelf because the Ash-King’s body had displaced a corridor through it.

Kael saw Darius first.

Then Iris.

Then the monster.

Iris had reached the narrow basalt shelf exactly as intended, but the Ash-King had not tried to turn.

It climbed.

Again.

Its foreclaws hooked into the vertical face.

Its skeletal body rose almost straight upward.

The damaged rear leg dragged.

The torn left wing folded tight against stone.

Darius looked up.

"Move."

Iris moved.

The Ash-King climbed over the shelf instead of around it.

Another assumption destroyed.

Galahad cursed from somewhere below.

The creature reached the top.

Its damaged dorsal vent released an irregular burst of smoke.

Then the Ash-King jumped.

Not flew.

Dropped.

Darius pushed Iris out of the landing zone.

The creature hit the shelf.

Basalt split.

A fracture raced toward Kael.

"BACK!"

The entire ledge tilted.

Kael slid.

Sera lost footing beside him.

He grabbed her wrist.

The ground dropped another foot.

Vance emerged from the ash below and caught Kael’s belt.

For several seconds the three of them hung in an ugly chain against a sloping piece of basalt while the shelf broke beneath their boots.

Sera still held the bow.

Of course she did.

"Let go of me," Kael said.

"No."

"I can climb."

"Then climb."

Vance grunted below him.

"This conversation is excellent."

Kael found a foothold.

Pulled.

Pain ripped through his ribs so hard that his vision darkened.

Sera used the rock face.

Together they got back onto the stable portion.

Vance followed last.

The shelf behind them collapsed.

The Ash-King went with it.

For one hopeful instant Kael thought the fall might matter.

Then the tattered wings opened.

Silent flight caught the creature halfway down.

The Ash-King rose out of the falling stone cloud.

Strong.

Still strong.

Vance stared.

"How much does it take?"

Darius answered from the upper shelf.

"More."

The Ash-King banked.

Left.

Always easier left.

Sera saw the damaged wing membrane open.

She had no arrow.

Her hand moved.

Mana Motes gathered.

The second real attempt began.

The Construct Arrow formed.

Better than before.

Still trembling.

Sera drew.

The ash current moved across her face.

Right to left.

Hotter than before.

She adjusted.

The Ash-King turned.

The damaged membrane opened wider.

Sera released.

The Construct Arrow flew.

For ten yards it held.

Then thermal turbulence hit.

The rear distorted.

The arrow veered.

Sera’s eyes sharpened.

Her Structure Affinity responded.

Not enough to turn the projectile freely.

Not homing.

But she understood what was wrong.

Balance.

She altered it.

The rear narrowed midflight.

The arrow corrected slightly.

Not much.

Enough.

It struck the torn wing membrane.

The Construct Arrow shattered on impact.

A poor wound.

A good result.

The existing tear split another foot.

The Ash-King’s left wing buckled.

Its flight dropped.

The creature hit the ground hard.

Right rear leg first.

The wounded joint collapsed.

Its chest struck basalt.

Galahad shouted, "PRESSURE! TEN SECONDS!"

That was all.

Darius attacked.

Vance attacked.

Kael followed.

Iris moved to the flank.

Even Veyra, without her focus, grabbed a dropped spear from the battlefield and advanced only far enough to threaten the creature’s eye if it turned.

The Ash-King recovered before ten seconds.

Five, perhaps.

Darius reached the wounded rear leg and drove his blade into the open joint.

Vance struck the cracked side wound.

Kael chose the broken dorsal vent.

Not because it was closest.

Because Veyra had already shown it mattered.

He Rime-Stepped onto the creature’s side.

Bad decision.

He knew before his foot landed.

The Ash-King’s body was hotter than stone.

His boot slipped over soot-black scale.

Kael drove Frostbite Edge into the base of the broken vent.

Cold spread.

The surrounding scale contracted.

Cracked.

The Ash-King twisted.

Kael grabbed the hollow spine with his free hand.

Heat burned through his glove.

He held.

Then used Cold Snap directly into the fracture.

The damaged vent split farther.

Pressure erupted.

A column of superheated soot struck Kael across the chest.

He left the creature.

The world became gray and pain.

He hit the ground rolling.

His cloth mask tore away.

Ash entered his mouth.

Kael coughed violently.

Could not stop.

Every breath pulled more grit into his throat.

Someone grabbed him.

Veyra.

She dragged him behind a broken stone.

"Do not breathe."

Kael coughed again.

"Excellent advice."

"You people keep saying that."

She pressed a clean piece of cloth over his mouth.

The Ash-King screamed.

Kael looked over the stone.

Darius and Vance were still on it.

The creature’s rear leg had become nearly unusable, but its front half remained terrifyingly powerful.

Darius cut.

Retreated.

Cut again.

Vance stayed closer than Kael liked.

The Ash-King’s foreclaw slammed down.

Darius redirected one talon.

Vance avoided the second.

The third struck the ground and opened a crack between them.

Heat glowed from below.

Magma.

Not surface lava yet.

A red line beneath black stone.

Galahad saw.

"OFF THE CENTER!"

Darius withdrew.

Vance did not immediately.

He struck the side wound one more time.

Greed.

The Ash-King punished it.

Its jaw came down.

Vance raised his weapon across the bite.

Teeth closed around metal.

Theron’s arms buckled.

The Ash-King lifted him.

Kael’s stomach dropped.

Vance’s boots left the ground.

The weapon bent.

Not broke.

Yet.

Darius moved.

Too far.

Sera had a clear view.

No arrow formed.

Not yet.

She reached.

Mana Motes came.

The Ash-King shook Vance.

His body snapped sideways.

One more shake would break something important.

Sera compressed the motes.

The shaft formed.

Faster.

Wrong.

She corrected.

The point formed too broad.

She changed it.

Narrower.

Harder.

The affinity moved with the thought.

Not a named technique.

Not mastery.

Instinct.

Pierce.

The Construct Arrow’s tip became denser than the rest of the shaft.

Sera’s face tightened from the mana cost.

She drew.

The Ash-King’s black eye faced her.

Tiny white pupil.

Clear.

She fired.

The arrow crossed the basin.

The structure held.

The dense point struck the Ash-King’s eye ridge.

Not the eye.

The creature turned at the last moment.

The Construct Arrow penetrated between two thinner scales near the socket.

The Ash-King jerked.

Its jaws opened.

Vance dropped.

He hit the ground hard and did not move for a heartbeat.

Then rolled away.

Sera lowered the bow.

Her knees hit stone.

Kael stared.

That arrow had been different.

Not merely constructed.

Shaped for penetration.

Crude.

Uneven.

But different.

Sera knew too.

She looked at her hand.

Then the Ash-King.

No celebration.

The creature still stood.

Its injured leg failed every few steps. Its left wing hung lower. One dorsal vent was badly damaged and another cracked. Black blood streamed down its side. One eye socket now carried a glowing fragment of Mana-Weaved structure that dissolved seconds later.

Still it stood.

Still it moved.

Still it had not used its full body weight against them since becoming this wounded.

Kael felt dread settle in him.

A hurt creature did not always become easier.

Sometimes pain removed caution.

The Ash-King raised its head.

Every intact smokestack vent along its spine opened.

Ash poured upward.

Not slowly.

Violently.

The creature’s chest glow pulsed white.

Once.

Twice.

Vance got to his feet.

His weapon was visibly bent.

Galahad shouted, "BREAK CONTACT!"

The Ash-King slammed both forelegs into the ground.

Basalt fractured.

The red line beneath the battlefield widened.

Heat burst upward.

One of the cracks opened under the last surviving Vanguard fighter.

He jumped.

His foot cleared the opening.

The edge collapsed beneath the other.

He fell to one knee.

Iris moved toward him.

The Ash-King exhaled.

Not at them.

At the ground.

The Choking Cloud struck fractured basalt at point-blank range.

Superheated ash and gas blasted into every open crack.

The result was immediate.

Pressure had nowhere clean to go.

Stone erupted.

The center of the basin exploded upward.

Galahad disappeared behind debris.

Darius was thrown sideways.

Iris caught the Vanguard fighter’s arm as the shelf beneath him collapsed.

Veyra dropped flat.

Kael raised Glacial Parry with one arm.

The ice lasted less than a second against the heat.

Enough to keep a fist-sized stone from taking his head off.

The barrier shattered.

Kael lost sight of everyone.

Then magma broke the surface.

Not a river.

A violent red-orange spray from a newly opened fissure.

The Ash-King walked through the heat.

Its Ashen Touch had killed plants.

The Caldera itself did not matter to it.

Hot stone.

Ash.

Gas.

Magma.

This was its world.

Kael understood then why three attempts had failed.

They had been treating the Caldera as terrain the Ash-King happened to inhabit.

It was more than that.

The creature belonged to this place in a way they did not.

Galahad’s voice came through the chaos.

"WEST SHELF! MOVE WEST!"

Kael ran.

Or tried.

His ribs turned the first step into agony.

He pushed through it.

Veyra followed.

Darius emerged ahead of them, one arm hanging nearly useless at his side.

Sera stumbled from the ridge, bow still in hand.

Iris appeared last.

Not alone.

She was dragging the Vanguard fighter.

Alive.

His lower leg was bleeding badly where fractured stone had torn through armor.

Vance came through the ash behind them.

Kael counted.

Galahad.

Darius.

Vance.

Iris.

Sera.

Veyra.

The Vanguard fighter.

Himself.

Eight.

Still eight.

The missing fighter from earlier remained missing.

The dead one remained dead.

The Ash-King remained alive.

They reached the western shelf.

Not safety.

A place that had not broken yet.

Everyone stopped only because their bodies demanded it.

Darius leaned on his sword.

Vance bent with both hands on his knees.

Iris immediately dropped beside the wounded Vanguard fighter and tied a pressure wrap around his leg.

Veyra coughed ash into the cloth covering her mouth.

Galahad looked over everyone.

Then toward the basin.

Sera sat hard against the stone.

Her hand shook violently.

Mana Motes flickered around her fingers without forming.

Kael crouched beside her.

"That last arrow."

Sera breathed through her nose.

"What about it?"

"You changed the point."

She looked at him.

"I know."

"On purpose?"

A pause.

"Mostly."

That was enough.

Not mastery.

Not a new list of techniques.

The beginning of one.

Sera looked at the empty quiver.

Then her hand.

"The first arrow felt like making something."

Kael waited.

"The last one felt like deciding what it was."

There it was.

Structure.

Not ammunition alone.

Design.

Her affinity revealing what Mana Weaving would become for her.

Kael looked toward the basin.

The Ash-King emerged through steam.

Slowly.

Its right rear leg dragged.

The damaged left wing did not fold correctly.

Black blood left a trail behind it.

One smokestack vent sputtered in violent bursts.

Another released smoke continuously.

The creature had been hurt more badly than during any previous attempt.

Yet when it raised its head, Kael felt no sense that victory was near.

Only that the next phase would be worse.

Vance straightened beside him.

"We have it."

Darius looked over.

"No."

Theron frowned.

Darius’s voice remained flat despite pain.

"We have damaged it."

Vance stared at the Ash-King.

"That is more than before."

"Yes."

"Then we continue."

Galahad stepped between the argument and the battlefield.

"We breathe first."

Vance’s jaw tightened.

Galahad pointed toward the creature.

"It is limping. Its wing is damaged. One pressure vent is nearly destroyed. It is bleeding from the side and rear leg. We have information we did not have ten minutes ago."

Then he pointed around the group.

"Darius has one functioning shoulder. Kael is coughing ash. Sera can barely hold her hand still. Veyra has no focus. One of your fighters may lose the leg if that wound opens wider."

The Vanguard fighter looked up.

"That seems dramatic."

Iris tightened the wrap.

He hissed.

She said, "It is accurate."

Galahad looked back at Vance.

"We do not trade eight damaged people for one damaged monster because seeing blood makes you impatient."

Theron said nothing.

That word hit.

Impatient.

Kael watched him.

Vance looked toward the Ash-King.

Then at the dead gray battlefield between them.

Whatever he wanted from this creature, it mattered enough that patience clearly cost him something.

Not proof.

Not yet.

Kael stored it.

The Ash-King did not attack.

That was almost worse.

It stood inside the steam and ash.

Watching.

Then its head lowered.

Not toward them.

Toward the ground.

Its mouth opened.

Kael expected another breath.

None came.

The creature bit into the corpse of the first Vanguard fighter.

Vance went completely still.

Nobody moved.

The Ash-King lifted the body.

Not whole.

Kael looked away before he consciously decided to.

Theron did not.

He watched.

Every second.

His face emptied.

The creature swallowed.

Then turned its white-pinned gaze toward the western shelf.

Vance’s hand tightened around his bent weapon.

Galahad said quietly, "Do not."

Theron did not answer.

The Ash-King opened its wings.

One damaged.

One strong.

The left failed to fully extend.

The creature tried anyway.

Once.

The wing buckled.

It tried again.

A loud snap came from the torn membrane.

The Ash-King remained grounded.

Everyone saw.

Sera looked up.

Darius straightened slightly.

Iris stopped wrapping the wounded fighter long enough to watch.

Kael felt the battlefield change.

Not victory.

A new condition.

The Ash-King could still climb.

Still charge.

Still breathe ash.

Still survive the Caldera better than all of them combined.

But perhaps it could no longer disappear into the sky.

Vance spoke without looking away from it.

"Now."

Galahad’s eyes narrowed.

"Not yet."

Theron turned.

"We grounded it."

"We grounded it while half of us can barely stand."

"It cannot fly."

"It can still kill."

Vance stepped closer.

"So can we."

Kael looked between them.

The argument would decide the next phase.

Then Sera spoke.

Her voice was quiet.

Everyone still heard.

"I need ten minutes."

Vance looked at her.

Sera held up her trembling hand.

"If you want me shooting things that matter, I need ten minutes."

Theron stared.

Then something surprising happened.

He nodded.

No argument.

"Ten."

Galahad looked at him.

"Fifteen."

Vance’s mouth tightened.

Sera said, "Ten."

Galahad looked at her.

She met his eyes.

"I can do ten."

Not bravado.

Assessment.

Galahad accepted it.

"Ten."

The group settled behind the western shelf.

Not resting fully.

Preparing.

Darius allowed Kael to retie his shoulder support because one-handed knot work had become ridiculous.

Iris worked on the Vanguard fighter’s leg.

Veyra searched the abandoned equipment for anything useful now that her focus was gone.

Galahad studied the new fissures.

Vance sat facing the Ash-King and did not take his eyes off it once.

Sera placed her physical bow across her knees.

No arrows beside it.

No shafts to clean.

No fletching to inspect.

Her hands looked strangely empty.

Then Mana Motes began gathering around her fingers again.

Slowly.

One at a time.

She did not try to form an arrow.

Not yet.

She simply held them there.

Learning the feeling.

Kael watched from several feet away.

Sera noticed.

"What?"

He shook his head.

"Nothing."

She narrowed her eyes.

Kael corrected himself.

"You’re getting better."

Sera looked at the motes.

"No."

Then she looked toward the Ash-King.

"I’m starting to understand what bad feels like."

Kael smiled faintly.

That sounded more like her.

Across the basin, the Ash-King lowered itself onto three good limbs and one ruined one.

Its corpse-like hide steamed.

Smoke poured from its back.

The tiny white pupils remained fixed on the people who had hurt it.

The fourth attempt had taken its flight.

It had taken two of Theron’s people from the fight, possibly more.

It had reopened nearly every injury the party carried into the basin.

It had forced Sera into her first real awakening.

And still neither side had broken.

Ten minutes remained before they moved again.

The next phase would be fought on the ground.

Kael was no longer certain that made it safer.
