The ash cloud swallowed the first battlefield so completely that Kael could no longer see the basalt where they had stood less than a minute earlier. Gray rolled over broken stone in thick layers, carrying heat ahead of it and leaving everything behind the advancing wall colorless. The secondary position sat higher along the basin’s eastern ridge, but even there Kael could taste ash at the back of his throat each time he breathed through the cloth covering his mouth. His ribs hurt, his hands shook from the first exchange, and the cold gathered around his sword kept bleeding away into the Caldera faster than he wanted to admit.

Galahad counted them before he did anything else. His gaze went from Darius to Kael, Vance, Iris, Sera, Veyra, then the three Iron Vanguard fighters spread along the ridge. Nobody answered verbally because nobody needed to. Ten had entered the engagement ground, and ten had reached the secondary position. That was already better than any of Vance’s previous attempts, but Galahad’s expression did not soften.

"Damage," he said, moving down the line while keeping one eye on the ash. "Fast answers. Nothing heroic."

Darius flexed his sword hand once but did not test the wounded shoulder. Blood had already begun staining through the fresh wrap where his armor rubbed against it. "Shoulder reopened. Functional."

Kael touched his ribs and regretted it. "Worse than before. Still moving."

Vance wiped blood from the shallow cut on his cheek with the back of one hand. "Nothing important."

Galahad looked at him. "That was almost useful. Iris?"

"Fine."

"Actual answer."

Iris checked the sleeve where loose stone had torn cloth without breaking skin. "No meaningful injury. Western route still open from here unless the ash reaches the lower cut."

Sera touched the side that had struck stone during the rescue, then looked toward her quiver. Four arrows remained. "Bruised. Bow is good. Four."

Veyra lifted her wrapped hand. "Focus intact enough for one discharge. After that, I make no promises about it or my hand."

One of Vance’s fighters had a shallow cut across his forehead. The other two reported nothing worse than bruises. Galahad nodded once and crouched behind the basalt ridge, where the last of Milo’s airflow ribbons still remained visible twenty yards downslope. The narrow cloth strip pointed east, fluttered, then went limp.

Everyone watched it.

The ribbon turned north.

Iris’s face tightened. "That is wrong."

Kael looked at her. "Wrong how?"

"It was pushing east before the breath."

Vance moved closer to the ridge without exposing his head above it. "The ash changed the current."

"No." Iris pointed. "Something else did."

The ribbon snapped south so sharply that the iron spike bent.

Sera’s bow came up.

Galahad hissed, "Positions."

They moved.

Not toward the front.

Away from the places they had occupied thirty seconds earlier.

Darius took the left approach around the basalt rib. Kael went right. Vance dropped behind the lower rock shelf while the three Vanguard fighters spread farther apart to deny the Ash-King one sweep across all of them. Iris vanished from Kael’s immediate sight, choosing a shallow crack that gave her a view of the ash without making her silhouette obvious.

Sera did not move far.

She simply changed elevation.

The broken basalt rib she had chosen earlier rose behind her, and she climbed two footholds higher until only the top half of her body would need to clear the rock to shoot.

Then the gray cloud moved.

Not drifted.

Moved.

A wall of ash ten yards across folded inward as though something enormous had passed through its center.

Kael saw nothing inside it.

No eye.

No wing.

No outline.

Darius shifted his sword.

"Above."

The Ash-King came down behind them.

Its wings made almost no sound.

The only warning was the sudden weight of displaced air slamming ash against Kael’s back and Iris shouting from somewhere to his left. Kael turned as the corpse-like body dropped through the haze with both hind legs extended. One of Vance’s fighters looked up too late.

"MOVE!"

Vance lunged.

The fighter tried to dive.

The Ash-King landed.

Its right rear leg slipped on contact exactly as before, but the left came down cleanly. Stone shattered beneath the talons. The fighter disappeared behind an eruption of ash and broken basalt.

Vance reached him a heartbeat later.

Too late.

Kael saw one arm beneath the Ash-King’s foot.

Nothing above the elbow moved.

Vance stopped.

Only for half a second.

Then the Ash-King’s tail swept toward him.

"THERON!"

Darius crossed the distance first.

His sword struck the side of Vance’s armor instead of the tail, Aura driving through the flat of the blade and knocking Vance backward.

The tail passed.

It hit the basalt shelf hard enough to remove the top half.

Stone fragments tore through the air.

Kael raised one arm and formed ice instinctively.

"Glacial Parry!"

A curved plane of ice appeared in front of him.

Three fragments hit.

The first buried halfway through.

The second cracked the surface.

The third punched through and struck Kael’s upper arm hard enough to spin him sideways.

The ice shattered behind him.

He hit one knee.

Pain ran from his shoulder into his fingers.

No blood.

Probably.

The System flashed warnings.

[Blunt trauma detected]

[Right upper arm mobility reduced: minor]

He ignored it.

The Ash-King lifted its foot.

What remained beneath it did not move.

Vance saw.

Kael watched the knowledge enter his face.

No scream.

No dramatic grief.

His expression simply became empty for one breath.

Then he turned toward the Ash-King.

"LEFT LEG!"

Darius was already moving.

The creature’s unstable rear leg had not fully recovered from the landing. Darius attacked the joint Sera had struck earlier, his sword taking the shortest line instead of winding for power. Aura concentrated along the edge. The strike landed precisely behind the scale Sera’s arrow had already loosened.

Black blood sprayed.

The Ash-King jerked.

Kael forced himself upright and drove forward with Rime-Step.

Cold burst beneath his boot.

The technique carried him over fractured stone faster than his ribs wanted.

He reached the wound Darius had opened and thrust.

"Glacial Pierce!"

Ice condensed tightly around the sword point.

Not a broad construct.

No wasted surface.

The thrust entered the gap between scales.

The Ash-King’s hide resisted like stone.

Kael pushed.

For half a second the blade stopped.

Then the tip broke through.

Cold drove inside.

The Ash-King convulsed.

Its leg kicked backward.

Kael released the sword grip with his left hand and threw himself sideways before the limb could catch his chest.

The foot clipped his hip.

That was enough.

Kael left the ground.

He struck ash-covered basalt, rolled once, then slid until his shoulder hit a stone ridge.

All the breath left him.

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came.

His ribs seized.

The System flooded his vision.

He dismissed it blindly.

Breathe.

He tried.

Pain.

Again.

A thin breath entered.

Good.

Across the basin, the Ash-King turned toward Darius.

Its black eyes fixed on him.

The tiny white pupils seemed almost too small to belong to something so huge.

Darius stood alone in front of it.

His injured shoulder lowered.

His sword remained high.

The creature lunged.

Darius did not retreat until the jaws committed.

Then he stepped inside the line of the bite.

Kael’s heart stopped.

The Ash-King’s teeth snapped shut behind Darius’s back as he passed beneath the lower jaw. Darius struck once at the softer underside of the neck.

Not deep.

He did not try to make it deep.

The strike forced the head upward.

That was the opening.

Sera rose behind the basalt rib.

She already had the arrow drawn.

Her third physical arrow of the current count.

Four became three the instant she released.

The shaft crossed the basin through drifting ash.

The current pulled it right.

Sera had aimed left.

The arrow entered a crack beneath the Ash-King’s neck.

The creature’s head snapped sideways.

Darius escaped.

Sera immediately dropped behind the rock.

The Ash-King found her anyway.

Its eye turned.

Tiny white pupil.

Directly toward the basalt rib.

Sera saw.

"Oh, wonderful."

The creature opened its wings.

Galahad shouted, "SERA, MOVE!"

She did not argue.

Sera jumped from the rear side of the basalt rib and slid down ash-covered stone just as the Ash-King launched.

Silent.

No thunder from its wings.

No roar.

Only the dry whisper of burnt parchment cutting through gray air.

The enormous body crossed the basin at terrifying speed.

Sera hit the lower shelf and rolled.

The Ash-King struck the basalt rib she had occupied.

Its shoulder shattered the top.

The entire formation collapsed.

Sera disappeared beneath falling gray dust.

Kael pushed himself up despite his ribs.

"Sera!"

"I’m moving!"

Good.

She emerged from the far side of the collapse with her bow still in one hand.

The quiver remained attached.

Three arrows.

The Ash-King climbed.

Not into open sky.

Into ash.

One moment its skeletal body filled half Kael’s vision.

The next, only the end of a tattered wing remained.

Then nothing.

Iris shouted from the western side, "DO NOT GROUP!"

Galahad pointed in opposite directions.

Everyone spread.

Kael forced himself toward the nearest low basalt pillar.

Vance did not.

He remained near the dead fighter.

Only long enough to grab the man’s weapon and drag it clear from beneath settling stone.

Not the body.

Could not.

The Ash-King was already circling somewhere above them.

Theron placed the weapon beside a crack in the ridge where it would not be buried.

Then he stood.

Kael saw it.

A promise without words.

Later.

If later existed.

The smokestack vents announced the Ash-King’s next movement before its body appeared. Dark smoke poured downward through the ash cloud above them, forming several drifting columns where none had existed before.

Veyra looked up.

Her face changed.

"The vents."

Darius moved toward her. "What?"

"They’re not only releasing smoke."

Kael followed her gaze.

The Ash-King remained hidden, but one dark plume pulsed.

Then another.

Pressure.

Release.

Pressure.

Release.

Veyra pulled her metal focus free.

The cracked channel along its length glowed faintly.

Galahad saw.

"You have one."

"I know."

"Then make it matter."

Veyra looked almost insulted. "That was the plan."

The Ash-King emerged from the cloud above the western shelf.

Its damaged left wing stretched wider during the turn.

The tear Sera had opened was larger now, but nowhere near enough to ground it.

Veyra raised the focus.

The metal trembled in her hand.

Kael felt heat gather.

Not broad.

Narrow.

Concentrated.

The same kind of thermal magic that had cut trees and stone in unnaturally precise lines.

The Ash-King banked.

Veyra tracked.

Waited.

The creature’s back turned partly toward them.

The hollow spines opened through the smoke.

"Now," Veyra whispered.

The focus flashed.

There was no fireball.

No explosion from her hand.

A needle-thin line of white heat crossed the basin.

It struck one of the larger hollow spines near the Ash-King’s shoulder.

For an instant nothing happened.

Then the spine cracked.

The top half blew away.

A column of superheated soot erupted from the broken opening.

The Ash-King’s body twisted violently in midair.

Its silent flight broke.

One wingbeat boomed.

The first true wingbeat Kael had heard from it.

The creature dropped fifteen feet before recovering.

Veyra’s focus cracked lengthwise.

She cried out and dropped it.

Metal hit stone.

Dark.

Finished.

Veyra stared at her burned palm.

"Worth it."

The Ash-King landed badly.

Right rear leg.

Shift.

Correction.

Then the damaged spinal vent released another violent burst of soot.

The creature’s chest glow changed.

Not brighter.

Uneven.

Kael’s System opened.

[Observed physiological change]

Damaged dorsal vent associated with irregular internal pressure release

Functional interpretation: probable thermoregulatory / respiratory support structure

Confidence: moderate

Kael shouted, "THE SPINES MATTER!"

Darius looked over once.

That was enough.

Vance heard too.

The Ash-King heard nothing but rage.

This time it roared.

The sound was dry and deep, less like an animal than stone grinding beneath the earth.

Then it charged.

Not Darius.

Veyra.

The woman who had broken the vent.

Veyra looked up and realized the same thing.

No focus.

No large spell.

Too far from cover.

Kael started toward her.

He would not make it.

Iris did.

She appeared from the left, Wind lightening her body as she crossed broken ground. She grabbed Veyra’s shoulder and used the momentum of her Brush Step to drag both of them sideways.

The Ash-King’s jaw struck where they had stood.

Basalt cracked between its teeth.

Iris and Veyra hit the ground together.

The creature’s foreclaw followed.

Sera rose behind the remains of her old firing position.

Second arrow ready.

Three became two when she fired.

The shot did not target the claw.

It struck the Ash-King’s damaged rear leg.

Not enough to hurt badly.

Enough to make it shift weight at the wrong moment.

The foreclaw hit short.

Iris felt one talon scrape the back of her cloak.

Cloth tore.

Skin beneath remained intact.

She rolled.

Veyra crawled.

Darius arrived between them and the next strike.

The Ash-King slammed its forelimb downward.

Darius caught nothing head-on.

His sword touched the inside of the descending wrist.

Aura flared.

His body rotated with the pressure instead of against it.

The limb struck two feet right of Iris.

The ground broke.

Darius paid for the redirection.

His damaged shoulder buckled.

One knee hit stone.

The Ash-King lifted the other claw.

Kael saw.

"ICE BIND!"

Cold erupted around the creature’s front ankle.

A thick band of ice locked one foot briefly to fractured basalt.

The Caldera’s heat attacked the construct instantly.

Steam burst upward.

The Ash-King pulled.

Cracks raced through the ice.

Kael clenched his hand.

"Hold."

It did.

One heartbeat.

Darius rolled away.

The ice exploded.

That one heartbeat had been enough.

The Ash-King turned toward Kael.

Its eye fixed on him.

Kael wished it had not.

The tail came first.

He Rime-Stepped backward.

The world jerked beneath his feet.

Cold carried him six yards.

The tail hit the place he had occupied.

Then kept going.

Galahad was behind him.

Kael saw too late.

"DOWN!"

Galahad dropped.

The tail passed over his back but clipped his raised pack.

Leather tore.

Galahad spun and hit the ground shoulder-first.

One of Vance’s remaining fighters ran toward him.

Wrong.

The Ash-King’s wing moved.

Not a full beat.

A sweep.

The ash covering the basin became a wall.

Gray hit the fighter from the side.

He disappeared.

Galahad vanished too.

Kael covered his eyes.

The Gravewind was not hot enough to burn like the Choking Cloud, but it carried stone chips and dense ash with enough force to knock him sideways.

Visibility became nothing.

Kael crouched.

Sword low.

Do not move blindly.

He remembered Milo saying something similar during training months ago.

A sound came through the gray.

Coughing.

Left.

Kael moved three steps.

Almost hit Vance.

Theron appeared like a shadow in the cloud.

"Galahad?"

"Lost sight."

"Iris?"

"Other side."

"Darius?"

Neither knew.

Bad.

Very bad.

The Ash-King had split them without even breathing.

Kael opened the System.

[Visibility severely compromised]

[Nearby heat signatures: multiple / interference high]

Nothing useful enough.

He shut it.

Vance listened.

Kael did too.

The ash moved around them.

Not randomly.

A heavier displacement passed somewhere ahead.

Theron grabbed Kael’s shoulder.

"Don’t."

Kael froze.

Two white points appeared in the gray.

Not eyes.

One eye.

The other hidden by angle.

The Ash-King was less than thirty feet away.

Neither man had heard it approach.

Vance slowly lowered his center.

Kael tightened his grip.

The creature’s head moved.

Searching.

Its nostrils pulled ash inward.

Smell.

It could smell them.

Vance whispered, "When it commits, opposite directions."

Kael barely moved his lips. "Which direction?"

"I haven’t decided."

"That seems important."

Theron almost smiled.

The Ash-King lunged.

They split.

Kael went right.

Vance left.

The jaws closed between them.

The impact of teeth striking nothing still sounded like broken timber.

Kael turned immediately.

Frostbite Edge.

He cut across the lower jaw.

The blade scored scale.

Did not penetrate.

Vance attacked from the other side.

His weapon struck near the hinge.

The Ash-King jerked its head upward.

Kael ducked under the jaw.

Too close.

He saw the cracks in the neck scales.

Saw pale light pulsing beneath them.

Saw ash leaking between the creature’s teeth even while its mouth remained closed.

Then he smelled the breath drawing inward.

"THERON!"

Both men ran.

The Ash-King’s chest expanded.

Kael could not see the others.

Could not know which direction led toward them.

The glow turned white.

Full breath.

No time.

He stopped.

Vance took three more steps before realizing.

"What are you doing?"

Kael raised his sword.

"Making it look at me."

"That is stupid."

"Yes."

The Ash-King opened its mouth.

Kael gathered Ice.

Too much.

He knew before he started.

The Caldera fought him.

Heat tore at the mana as quickly as he condensed it.

He planted both feet.

The Ash-King inhaled.

Kael swung.

"CRESCENT BLIZZARD!"

Cold detonated from the blade.

A broad crescent of compressed ice and cutting frost tore through the gray air.

It hit the Ash-King’s open mouth.

Not deep enough to kill.

Not even close.

But the sudden cold struck the superheated throat before the ash discharge completed.

Steam exploded outward.

The Ash-King recoiled.

The Choking Cloud fired upward instead of forward.

A column of black ash punched into the air.

Kael staggered.

His arms went numb.

His vision blurred at the edges.

One Crescent Blizzard.

Safely.

There it was.

Spent.

The System flashed mana-loss warnings.

He ignored them.

The Ash-King did not.

The creature recovered almost immediately.

Too immediately.

Its mouth lowered.

Pale steam rolled between its teeth.

Kael stared.

"That was my good one."

Vance grabbed his armor and dragged him backward.

"Then stop standing there."

The Ash-King came after them.

A shadow crossed above.

Sera.

Not physically.

Her arrow.

The third shot of this Chapter came through the ash and struck the Ash-King directly inside the mouth.

Two became one.

The creature jerked.

Not from damage.

From surprise.

The physical arrow snapped against inner scale or tooth, but it bought Kael the moment he needed.

He and Vance reached a basalt ridge.

Galahad emerged from the ash behind it, coughing violently.

Blood ran from one side of his scalp where flying stone had opened the skin.

"You alive?"

Kael leaned against rock. "Badly."

"Good enough."

"Where is everyone?"

"Iris has Veyra. Darius is east. One Vanguard fighter is with him."

"And the other?"

Galahad’s face changed.

Kael understood.

The fighter hit by Gravewind had not returned.

No time to ask.

The Ash-King’s wing tore through the cloud.

Galahad ducked.

Kael did too.

Vance did not move quickly enough.

The wing edge struck him across the chest.

Not a direct bone impact.

Membrane and lower joint.

Still enough.

Theron flew backward.

He hit stone.

His weapon left his hand.

Kael shouted his name.

Vance rolled onto one side.

Moved.

Alive.

The Ash-King landed over him.

Right rear leg.

Shift.

Correction.

Always.

Darius appeared through the ash.

He did not charge the head.

He attacked the weakness they knew.

Sword into the injured rear joint.

Aura drove through.

The existing wound split wider.

Black cinderblood poured.

The Ash-King’s rear leg folded nearly to the ground.

For the first time, the creature screamed.

The sound hurt.

Not merely loud.

Low enough that Kael felt pressure inside his chest.

Sera stood on the broken basalt ridge behind Darius.

One arrow remained.

She drew it.

The best-balanced shaft.

The one she had saved.

The Ash-King twisted toward Darius.

Its injured leg could no longer take full weight.

Good.

Then it changed.

Instead of rising, it dropped its body lower.

Used the collapse.

Turned the damaged side away from Darius.

The tail came around.

Darius saw it.

Too late to fully evade.

He raised the sword.

The tail hit.

Aura exploded.

Darius left the ground.

He struck a basalt pillar shoulder-first.

The sound was wrong.

His sword remained in his hand.

Barely.

He dropped to one knee.

Did not stand immediately.

Kael’s stomach went cold.

Sera’s last arrow followed the tail.

She had waited for the movement.

The strike exposed the Ash-King’s inner rear leg.

She released.

The shaft buried almost to the fletching inside the wound Darius had opened.

The Ash-King’s leg collapsed completely.

Its body slammed onto one side.

Stone shook.

Sera’s hand went back.

Nothing.

Her fingers entered the quiver.

Found empty leather.

Her body stopped.

The battlefield disappeared.

For one terrible instant, she was somewhere else.

Kael saw it happen from thirty yards away without knowing exactly what she saw.

Her shoulders locked.

Her eyes went wide.

Her right hand remained inside the empty quiver.

The Ash-King thrashed.

Darius tried to stand.

Could not on the first attempt.

Vance pushed himself away from the wall.

Galahad shouted something.

Sera heard none of it.

Thirty-six arrows.

Twelve.

Nine.

Five.

One.

None.

The memory returned with the emptiness.

A scream in dark hills.

Someone running.

Her captain telling her twelve shots should solve most fights.

The close creature.

The last arrow.

The miss.

The empty quiver afterward.

Two people who still needed her.

Nothing in her hand.

Nothing left to shoot.

Sera’s breath broke.

Her fingers gripped the inside of the quiver hard enough to hurt.

The Ash-King lifted its head.

Its black eye found Darius.

The Empire’s Shield was still trying to force his body upright.

The creature dragged itself forward on three reliable limbs and one ruined rear leg.

Even wounded, it moved.

Even bleeding, it moved.

Even after everything they had done, it was still strong enough to kill the strongest man among them.

Sera pulled her hand from the quiver.

Empty.

Her physical bow remained in the other hand.

Useless without an arrow.

No.

That was the old answer.

Something moved around her fingers.

Sera froze.

Not ash.

Ash moved with wind.

This did not.

Tiny motes hung in the air around her hand, almost impossible to see against the gray battlefield. She did not know whether they had been there the entire time or whether she was only now capable of noticing them.

Mana.

Loose.

Unclaimed.

Everywhere.

The Caldera was full of it.

Stone.

Heat.

Air.

The violence of magic used and spent around them.

Mana Motes.

Sera did not think the name.

She simply reached.

The motes moved.

Not enough.

They scattered.

Her concentration broke when the Ash-King dragged itself another step toward Darius.

Sera tried again.

The old panic screamed at her to reach for the quiver.

There was nothing there.

Good.

Nothing there meant stop looking there.

Her hand closed around empty air.

Mana gathered.

A shape tried to form.

Too thick near the head.

Too thin through the shaft.

It collapsed.

Sera swore.

Galahad saw her standing still.

"SERA!"

"I KNOW!"

She gathered again.

This time she thought about an arrow.

Not magic.

An arrow.

Weight.

Balance.

Spine.

Point.

Shaft.

Fletching.

Every part she had spent years inspecting.

Every flaw she had learned to see.

Every reason an arrow flew true or failed.

The motes compressed.

A line appeared between her fingers.

Pale.

Translucent.

Uneven.

It looked less forged than argued into existence.

The point formed first, then the shaft behind it. The rear flickered repeatedly where fletching should have been. One side warped.

Sera’s Structure Affinity reacted instinctively.

Wrong balance.

She knew that without understanding how she knew.

Her fingers tightened.

The shape changed.

Not much.

Enough.

The rear narrowed.

The shaft straightened.

A rough Construct Arrow rested in her hand. It was exactly the kind of foundation her established Structure Affinity was meant to build from: Mana Motes compressed into ammunition, with the ability eventually to alter properties such as density, hardness, edge, fragmentation, and penetration. At first, however, the source establishes that Construct Arrow should take significant mana and concentration, and Sera’s first attempt felt every bit of that cost.

Her knees almost gave.

Sera stared at the arrow.

"No."

Not refusal.

Warning to herself.

Not now.

She nocked it.

The physical bow creaked under draw.

The Construct Arrow trembled against the string.

Pieces of its surface broke away like pale dust.

Sera’s arms shook.

The Ash-King reached Darius.

Its chest began glowing again.

Ember-red.

Darius finally stood.

Barely.

His stance was wrong.

One shoulder too low.

One foot carrying too much weight.

Sera saw the shot.

Not a killing shot.

A necessary one.

The creature’s throat opened as it inhaled.

Sera remembered Milo.

Do not fight the air.

Ash moved from right to left.

Hot current rising.

The arrow was lighter than wood.

Too light.

It would drift more.

She adjusted.

Two inches.

Then another.

"Hold together."

She released.

The Construct Arrow left the bow.

It nearly failed immediately.

The shaft twisted in the crosscurrent.

Its rear flickered.

Sera thought, straight.

The arrow changed.

Not turned toward the target.

Not homed.

Its structure stabilized just enough to preserve the line she had chosen.

It crossed the last twenty yards.

Entered the Ash-King’s open mouth.

Then shattered.

The projectile lacked the density of her physical arrows.

It did not penetrate deeply.

It did not need to.

The sudden magical impact against the wounded throat disrupted the breath.

The Ash-King coughed ash instead of firing it.

A short violent blast struck the ground between its forelegs.

Darius moved.

One step.

Two.

Out.

The Ash-King snapped its jaws where his head had been.

Sera lowered her bow.

Her entire body shook.

The empty quiver rested against her back.

Kael’s System opened on its own.

[Observed Awakening Event]

Subject: Sera Venn

Mana Mote aggregation confirmed

Mana Weaving onset confirmed

Affinity expression observed: Structure

Initial construct stability: low

Mana efficiency: poor

Technique classification: Construct Arrow

Kael stared across the basin.

Sera was still standing.

Barely.

She looked at her empty hand.

Then at the empty quiver.

Not helpless.

The realization hit her face harder than triumph would have.

Milo had been right.

She had spent years punishing every quiver for being finite.

The quiver was still finite.

She was not.

The Ash-King turned toward her.

Of course it did.

Sera looked up.

"Bad timing."

The creature spread its wings.

Its damaged vent coughed a violent column of soot.

Its ruined rear leg dragged.

Its left wing was torn wider.

Black blood poured from multiple wounds.

And still the Ash-King looked enormous enough to kill all of them.

Galahad shouted from below the ridge, "TERTIARY POSITION! MOVE!"

Nobody argued.

Kael reached Darius first.

"You good?"

Darius took one breath.

Then another.

"No."

Better answer.

Kael got under his uninjured side.

Darius allowed it.

That scared Kael more than the answer.

Vance recovered his weapon and reached them.

"Move him."

Kael glared. "Helpful."

Theron took Darius’s other side.

Together they ran.

Iris emerged through thinning ash with Veyra beside her. Veyra’s damaged focus was gone, discarded somewhere after cracking beyond use. One of the two surviving Vanguard fighters followed.

Only one.

Vance saw.

He looked behind them.

Nothing.

No second man.

His jaw tightened.

"Where?"

Iris shook her head.

"Couldn’t find him."

Theron’s face went still.

Galahad shouted, "VANCE!"

Theron looked toward the Ash-King.

Then toward the retreat.

He ran.

The creature launched after them.

Its silent flight was no longer completely silent.

The damaged wing snapped loudly once per cycle.

The broken smokestack vent released pressure in uneven bursts.

They had hurt it.

Enough to change it.

Not enough to make it weak.

The Ash-King climbed over the basin and spread its tattered wings against a sky already gray with its own ash.

Then every hollow spine along its back opened.

Smoke poured out.

Not from one.

All of them.

The entire basin began disappearing.

Iris looked over her shoulder.

"That’s new."

Vance’s face changed.

"No."

He had seen something like it.

"What?" Kael demanded.

Theron did not answer immediately.

The Ash-King vanished into a cloud expanding from its own body.

Not breath.

Not wing-thrown ash.

A deliberate veil.

Vance tightened his grip on Darius.

"Run."

Galahad heard the tone.

"What is it?"

Vance looked toward the gray swallowing the basin behind them.

"Soot Veil."

The name did not matter.

The explanation did.

"When it does this, it hunts."

They reached the tertiary ridge.

Barely.

Sera stumbled behind them.

Her bow remained in hand.

The quiver remained empty.

Her right hand shook from Mana Weaving.

She tried to gather Mana Motes again.

Three appeared.

Then vanished.

Nothing formed.

The first Construct Arrow had cost far more than it should have.

Good.

Awakening did not mean mastery.

Behind them, the Ash-King disappeared completely.

The basin became silent.

No wingbeat.

No claw.

No roar.

Only drifting ash.

Galahad shoved everyone behind the tertiary rocks and counted again.

Kael.

Darius.

Vance.

Iris.

Sera.

Veyra.

Galahad.

One Vanguard fighter.

Eight.

They had started the fourth attempt with ten.

One fighter lay dead beneath the Ash-King’s landing.

The other had vanished in the Gravewind and had not returned.

Vance looked at the empty spaces in the group.

No one said anything.

Then the last airflow ribbon snapped.

Not bent.

Snapped.

Iris watched the loose cloth vanish into gray.

The wind had changed again.

Sera leaned against stone, chest heaving.

Her empty quiver pressed against her back.

Kael looked at her.

She looked at him.

Neither smiled.

The awakening had happened.

The Ash-King was still alive.

And somewhere inside the expanding gray veil, something enormous had begun circling them without making a sound.

The fight was nowhere near over.
