Chapter 369: Chapter 369 The scouts return

Talia’s POV

The days had passed very quietly since we visited the grave.

The mornings were different now. Kaelen woke everyday with a softness in his eyes that had not been there before. He would reach for me in the dark, and I would feel the warmth of his hand finding mine.

The grief was still there, but it was no longer a wall between us. It was a bridge, connecting us to something deeper.

Kaelen was lighter now, and I could see the change in him. The weight that had been pressing down on his shoulders for a long time was gone, and he moved with a new kind of purpose.

He trained harder, he smiled more, and he held me tighter at night. It was like watching a man who had finally made peace with his past, and I felt a warmth spreading through my chest every time I looked at him.

I thought about the promise we had made to each other, standing hand in hand at his father’s grave as the sun set behind us. I thought about the vows we had spoken, and the words that had felt like they had been waiting all along to be said. We were ready.

We were ready for whatever came.

But I knew that the peace would not last. I could feel it in the air, with the tension that always seemed to linger beneath the surface like a storm waiting to break. The war was coming, and we both knew it.

It was only a matter of time before the news arrived.

I could feel it in the way the warriors trained harder, in the way the elders spoke in hushed tones, and in the way the children stopped laughing as much. The stronghold was holding its breath, waiting for the storm to break, and I was holding mine right along with it.

Then the scouts returned at dawn.

I was in the training yard with Kaelen when I saw them ride through the gates. Their horses were covered in dust, and their faces were grim.

I saw the weariness in the way they sat in their saddles, and in the way their shoulders slumped with exhaustion. They had ridden hard to get back, pushing themselves and their horses to the limit.

I felt a surge of gratitude for them, even as my heart sank with what they were about to tell us.

They had been gone for weeks, watching the border, and waiting for any sign of movement. I could see the exhaustion in their eyes, and I could see the fear that they were trying to hide.

It was the same fear I had seen in the mirror after my vision of Malachai. The fear of something that was too big, too powerful, and too ancient to fight. But I also saw something else in their eyes that looked like determination.

They must have seen the enemy, and they had come back to warn us. They had not run.

I felt my heart sink as I watched them dismount. I already knew that the news was not going to be good. I could feel it in my bones, the same way I had felt Malachai’s presence in my vision.

Kaelen walked to me, and I felt his hand on my back. "Come," he said, and his voice was steady. "Let us hear what they have to say."

I nodded, and we walked to the meeting hall. The scouts were already gathered around the table, and I could see the tension in their shoulders. Their faces were tired, and their eyes were filled with something I did not want to name. But it looked like fear.

"Alpha," one of the scouts said, and his voice was heavy. "Luna. We have news."

I listened as the scout spoke, and I felt the cold settling into my bones.

"Malachai is gathering his army at the edge of the Ashen Lands," he said, and his voice was flat with exhaustion. "We saw them with our own eyes. There were thousands of wolves, Alpha. Corrupted wolves. And they are preparing for an attack."

I felt Kaelen’s hand tighten around mine.

His fingers were warm and steady, and I felt the strength in them. He was not afraid, and he was not wavering. He was my anchor, and I was his.

"How long do we have?" he asked.

The scout shook his head. "Two months, Alpha. Or maybe less. They are moving faster than we expected."

I felt the weight of his words pressing down on me. Two months. That was not a lot of time.

I felt the walls closing in around me, and the weight of the timeline pressing down on my chest. Two months, which is Sixty days. It felt like a lifetime, and it felt like no time at all.

We had prepared, but we were not ready. Or at least not yet. There was still so much to do, so much to organize, and so much to train.

Jax stepped forward, and I saw the fire in his eyes. "Then we use every day we have," he said, and his voice was fierce. "We train harder, we prepare faster, and we do not waste a single moment."

Silas nodded, and I saw the calm determination in his eyes. "We need to send word to the allied packs," he said. "They need to know that the time is coming, and they need to start mobilizing."

Kaelen looked at the scouts, and I saw the determination in his gray eyes. "Thank you for your service," he said, and his voice was steady. "Rest. You have earned it."

The scouts nodded, and they walked out of the room. I watched them go, and I felt the weight of the moment settling over us.

I turned to the others, and I felt the determination rising in my chest. "We need to prepare," I said, and my voice was firm. "We need to train harder, and we need to make sure every wolf is ready. We cannot afford to be caught off guard."

Jax nodded, and I saw the fire in his eyes. "I will organize the training schedules," he said. "I will make sure every warrior is ready."

Silas spoke, his voice calm and measured. "I will send word to the allied packs," he said. "They need to start mobilizing their forces."

I thought about the allied packs, about the wolves who had pledged to stand with us. They would be afraid, just like us. But they would also be ready. They had seen the truth, and they had chosen to fight.

Cain looked at Kaelen, and I saw the seriousness in his eyes. "We need to reinforce the borders," he said. "We cannot let them catch us off guard. We need to be ready for anything."

Kaelen nodded. “I agree, Cain.” He replied. “Get to it immediately.”

Soon, the room emptied, and I was alone with Kaelen.

The silence was heavy, and I could hear the echo of our footsteps fading down the hallway. I could feel the weight of the moment settling over us, with the knowledge that everything was about to change.

Kaelen turned to me, and I saw the love in his gray eyes. "Talia," he said, and his voice was soft. "We are going to get through this."

I nodded, and I felt the tears burning in my eyes. "I know we are, Kaelen. We have each other, we have our pack, and we have our love."

He pulled me into his arms, and I felt his warmth against me. "We do this together," he said.

I pressed my face into his chest. "Together." I replied.

The war was coming, and I knew that it would not be easy, but we were ready.

We had each other, and we had our pack, and we had our love. And that was more than enough.
