Chapter 368: Chapter 368 The promise

Talia’s POV

The sun was beginning to set, and the sky was painted in shades of orange and pink.

I stood beside Kaelen, and I felt the warmth of his hand in mine. We had been standing at the grave for a long time, and I could feel the peace settling over us. The wind had died down, and the birds had stopped singing.

The world was quiet, and it was beautiful, and for a moment, I let myself forget about everything else.

The silence was not empty. It was full, filled with the love we shared and the memories we had made. It was the kind of silence that did not need to be filled with words, because we understood each other without them.

I looked at Kaelen, and I saw the tears still wet on his face. But he was smiling. The sadness was still there, but it was softer now, like a wound that had finally begun to heal.

I could see the change in him, the way his shoulders had relaxed, and the way his breathing had steadied. He had been carrying this weight for so long, and now he was finally letting it go.

"Thank you," Kaelen said, and his voice was soft. "For being here with me. Thank you for not letting me face this alone."

I squeezed his hand, and I felt the warmth of his fingers against mine. "I will always be here, Kaelen. Always. You do not have to face anything alone anymore."

He turned to me, and I saw the love in his gray eyes. The tears were still there, but they were not tears of sadness anymore. They were tears of gratitude, of relief, and of a weight finally being lifted.

"Talia," Kaelen said, and his voice was steady. "I want to make you a promise."

I looked at him, and I felt the tears burning in my eyes. "What kind of promise?" I asked.

Kaelen took both of my hands in his, and I felt the warmth of his fingers against mine. He held them tightly, like he was afraid I would slip away if he let go.

"I promise that no matter what happens," Kaelen said, and his voice was firm and unwavering, "I will always fight for you. I will always protect you, and I will always love you."

I watched his lips form the words, and I felt each one land in my heart like a seed taking root. He was not just making a promise. He was making a vow, one that I knew he would keep for the rest of his life.

I felt the tears streaming down my face, and I could not stop them. "Kaelen..." I whispered.

He squeezed my hands, and I felt the strength in his grip. "I mean it, Talia. I will never stop fighting for us. No matter what comes, and no matter what we face, I will always choose you."

I wanted to believe him, and I did, but there was a small part of me that was afraid. Afraid that the war would take him away from me. And afraid that I would lose him before we had the chance to build the future we dreamed of.

I looked at him, and I felt the love swelling in my chest. It was so big, and so overwhelming, that I did not know how to contain it. All I knew was that I needed to say something, and needed to give him the same promise he had just given me.

"Kaelen," I said, and my voice was barely a whisper. "I promise you the same thing. I will always fight for you, I will always protect you, and I will always love you."

The words felt right coming out of my mouth, like they had been waiting there all along. I had never made a promise like this before, but I knew that I meant every single word.

I watched his face change as my words sank in. The tears spilled over, but he was smiling, and I could see the joy in his eyes.

Kaelen pulled me into his arms, and I felt his warmth against me.

I melted into him, letting myself be held. His arms were strong and steady, and I felt like I could stay there forever, safe and loved and protected.

"Together," Kaelen said, and his voice was thick with emotion.

I pressed my face into his chest, and I felt the steady beat of his heart against my cheek. "Together," I repeated.

We stood there in the silence, and I felt the peace settling over us. The sun continued to set, and the sky grew darker. The sun was sinking below the horizon, and the world was bathed in golden light. The clouds were painted in shades of orange and pink, and the sky was slowly darkening into a deep purple.

The colors were fading, and the stars were beginning to appear.

I looked up at the sky, and I watched the first stars twinkling to life. They were small and distant, but they were there, like a reminder that even in the darkness, there was always light.

I could feel the coolness of the evening air on my skin, and I could feel the warmth of Kaelen’s body against mine. It was the perfect balance, and the perfect moment.

"Kaelen," I said, and my voice was soft. "Look."

He turned, and I saw him look at the sky.

"It is beautiful," Kaelen said, and his voice was filled with wonder.

I nodded, and I felt the tears burning in my eyes. "It is," I agreed.

Kaelen squeezed my hand, and I felt the warmth of his fingers against mine. "Just like you," he said.

I laughed, and I felt the warmth spreading through my chest. "You are impossible," I said.

He smiled, and I saw the love in his gray eyes. "I know," he said. "That is why you love me."

I laughed again, and I felt the joy spreading through me. "That is exactly why I love you," I said.

We stood together, hand in hand, watching the sun set behind us. The golden light was fading, and the stars were growing brighter.

The last rays of sunlight reflected off the gravestone, casting a warm glow on the name carved into the stone. It felt like Kaelen’s father was watching over us, blessing us, giving us his approval.

The world was quiet, and it was peaceful, and for a moment, I let myself forget about everything else.

The war was coming, and we both knew that. Malachai was gathering his army, and he would not stop until he had everything. But standing there, with Kaelen’s hand in mine, I was not afraid.

I had been afraid for so long, afraid of losing him, afraid of failing, and afraid of what the future held. But standing here, with the warmth of his hand in mine, I realized that the fear did not matter. What mattered was that we were together.

I could feel his strength, and I could feel his love, and I knew that as long as we were together, we could face anything.

"Kaelen," I said, and my voice was steady. "We are going to win this."

He looked at me, and I saw the determination in his gray eyes. "I know we are," he said.

I squeezed his hand, and I felt the warmth of his fingers against mine. "Together," I said.

He squeezed mine back, and I felt the strength in his grip. "Together," he repeated.

We stood there in the silence, and I felt the peace settling over me. The war was coming, and I knew that it would not be easy. But we were ready.

We had each other, and we had our pack, and we had our love. And that was more than enough.
