Chapter 354: Chapter 354 The Stepping Down

Talia’s POV

Days had passed since Piper began working with my mother.

I had watched them grow closer, their bond strengthening with each passing day. Piper had thrown herself into the work, and my mother had found a new energy, and a new purpose. They were a team now, and I felt a warmth in my chest every time I saw them together.

But the peace was fragile. I could feel it in the air, with the tension that always seemed to linger beneath the surface. The battle was coming, and everyone knew it.

Then the message came.

A young wolf ran to me, with his face flushed with urgency. "Luna, Elder Aldric has called a gathering. He requests everyone’s presence in the great hall."

I frowned, and I felt the confusion rising in my chest. Aldric had not called a gathering in a long time. He had stepped back from leadership, content to let the younger wolves take over. So something must be wrong.

I walked to the great hall, and I felt the weight of the moment pressing down on me.

The great hall was filled with wolves.

They had gathered at Aldric’s request, and I could see the curiosity on their faces. He had not called a meeting like this in months, and they did not know what to expect. The whispers spread through the crowd like ripples in a pond, and I could see the confusion in their eyes.

Aldric stood at the front of the hall, and I saw the weight of the years on his shoulders.

I could see the lines on his face, deeper than I remembered. I could see the way his hands gripped the edge of the table, steadying himself. He had been strong for so long, for so many years, and now I could see that the strength was finally fading.

He was old, and he was tired, and he was ready. His back was straight, but I could see the effort it took for him to stand tall.

"Everyone," he said, and his voice carried across the hall. "Thank you for coming. I have something important to say."

I watched him, and I felt the weight of his words before he even spoke them. There was something in his eyes, something that told me this was a moment I would remember forever.

Aldric took a breath, and I saw his hands trembling. He clasped them behind his back, trying to hide the shaking, but I could see it.

I remembered the first time I had met him, the way he had looked at me with stern eyes and told me I had to prove myself. I remembered the way he had softened over time, the way he had become my grandfather in more than just name. I remembered the way he had hugged me when I brought my mother home, with the tears streaming down his face.

I had never seen him look so vulnerable.

"I have been an elder of this pack for longer than most of you have been alive," he said. "I have seen battles, and I have seen peace. I have seen joy, and I have seen loss. And I have loved every moment of it."

He paused, and I saw the tears in his old eyes. His voice wavered, and I could see him struggling to hold back the emotion.

"But I am tired," he continued. "And I am old. And it is time for me to step down."

The hall fell silent. I could hear the sound of my own heartbeat, loud and insistent in my ears. I heard the murmurs spreading through the crowd, and I saw the shock on their faces.

"Step down?" a wolf asked, and his voice was filled with disbelief. "But you have been our elder for so long. You have led us through so much."

Aldric nodded, and I saw the sadness in his eyes. "I know. But it is time. I want to spend my remaining years in peace."

I walked to him, and I took his hand. His fingers were cold and trembling, and I felt the frailty of his age. "Grandfather," I said, and my voice was soft. "Are you sure?"

He looked at me, and I saw the love in his old eyes. "I am sure, Talia. I have given everything I have to this pack. And now, I want to rest."

Kaelen walked to stand beside me, and I felt his hand on my back.

His presence was steady and grounding, and I felt the warmth of his hand through my shirt. He did not need to say anything, because his touch was enough. He was with me, and he would always be with me.

"Grandfather, you have been the heart of this pack for as long as I can remember," he said. "We will honor your decision."

Aldric nodded, and I saw the gratitude in his eyes. "Thank you, Kaelen. That means more than you know."

I looked at the crowd, and I saw the faces of the wolves who had grown up under Aldric’s leadership. I saw the elders who had served beside him, and the young wolves who had looked up to him.

"You have given us everything," I said. "You have protected us, guided us, and loved us. And we will never forget that."
