Chapter 351: Chapter 351 The recruits 1

Jax’s POV

I watched Kaelen and Cain walk into the war room, their faces still flushed from training. I could see the red welts on Kaelen’s hands, the ones that always appeared when he pushed himself too hard. He had been training for hours, and I could see the exhaustion in his eyes. But I could also see the determination. He was ready. We were all ready.

Kaelen nodded at me as he walked to the head of the table. I saw him glance at the maps, and I saw the tension in his shoulders. The battle was coming, and we all felt it.

I leaned against the wall, trying to look casual, but my mind was racing. We had the allied packs, but it was not enough. We needed more wolves. We needed every warrior we could find.

Kaelen stood at the head of the table, and I saw the determination in his gray eyes. His hand was resting on a map of the territories, and I could see the lines he had drawn, marking the positions of the packs that had already pledged their loyalty.

"We need to send out recruiters," Kaelen said, and his voice was firm. "Wolves who can convince other packs to join us. Wolves who can speak the truth and make them see the danger."

I pushed off the wall, and I felt the grin spreading across my face.

I had been cooped up in the stronghold for too long, training and waiting and watching the tension build. I was not built for sitting still. I was built for action, for movement, for doing something that mattered. And this mission mattered. It mattered more than anything I had ever done.

I looked at Silas, and I saw the calm acceptance in his eyes. He was always ready for anything. He never complained, never hesitated, never backed down. If I was going to walk into enemy territory, there was no one I would rather have at my side.

This was exactly what I had been waiting for. I had spent too long sitting around, waiting for the battle to come. I needed to do something. I needed to fight.

"I volunteer, Alpha," I said, and I could hear the eagerness in my voice.

Silas stepped forward beside me, and his voice was calm and steady. "I will go with him, Alpha."

Kaelen looked at us, and I saw the trust in his eyes. He knew we could do this. He knew we would not fail him.

I looked at Talia, and I saw the gratitude in her eyes. "You know this will not be easy, Jax. Some of these packs were once our enemies."

I shrugged, and I felt the confidence in my chest. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend, Luna. That is what I am counting on."

Talia smiled, and I saw the warmth in her eyes. "I know you will bring them back, Jax. I believe in you."

I stood at the border of Blackmoor Valley, and I felt the weight of the moment pressing down on me. I had packed light, and I had said my goodbyes. But there was one person I had not said goodbye to yet.

Piper walked to me, and I saw the worry in her eyes.

I had seen that look on her face before. It was the same look she had worn when we left for the Ashen Lands. The same look she had worn when I volunteered for the distraction at Malachai’s gate. She was always worried about me, and I never knew how to make her stop.

I wanted to tell her that everything would be fine, that I would be back before she knew it, that there was nothing to worry about. But I could not lie to her. I could not promise her something I was not sure I could deliver.

Her hands were clasped in front of her, and I could see the tension in her shoulders.

"Be careful, Jax," she said, and her voice was soft.

I grinned, but I could feel the seriousness behind it. "I am always careful, Piper."

Piper shook her head, and I saw the concern on her face. "You are never careful, Jax. You charge into things without thinking, and you always end up in trouble."

I placed my hand over my heart in mock offense. "That hurts, Piper. That really hurts."

She did not laugh. She just looked at me, and I saw the fear in her eyes. "I mean it, Jax. Come back to me. Please."

I reached for her hand, and I squeezed it. I felt the warmth of her fingers against mine, and I saw the tears glistening in her eyes.

"I will, Piper," I said, and I meant every word. "I promise."

We approached the pack territory, and I felt the tension in the air.

I could smell the smoke from their cooking fires, and I could hear the sounds of their daily life. Children laughing, warriors training, elders talking. They were just like us in so many ways. They had families, and they had hopes, and they had dreams. And they were about to lose it all if they did not listen.

I felt a pang of guilt for all the battles we had fought against them. All the blood we had spilled. All the lives we had taken. It felt like a waste now, a meaningless cycle of violence that had only weakened us all.

This pack had been our enemy once. They had fought against us in battles that had cost lives on both sides. I could feel the eyes on us, watching from the shadows, and I could hear the whispers spreading through the camp.

Silas walked beside me, his calm presence steadying my nerves.

I had always admired that about Silas. No matter how dire the situation, no matter how dangerous the mission, he never lost his composure. He was like a rock in a storm, steady and unshakeable. When I was around him, I felt like I could do anything.

I glanced at him, and I saw the quiet confidence in his eyes. He was not afraid. He was not worried. He was just focused on the task at hand.

"They are watching us," he said, and his voice was low.

I nodded. "I know. Let them watch."

The Alpha emerged, and I saw the suspicion in his eyes. He was tall and scarred, and his hand rested on his sword. His warriors flanked him, and I could see the hostility in their eyes.

"What do you want?" he asked, and his voice was cold.

I stepped forward, and I felt the weight of the moment. I could feel the eyes of his warriors on me, and I could feel the tension crackling in the air.

"We have come to offer you a choice, Alpha," I said, and my voice was steady. "Malachai is coming, and he will not stop until he has everything. He will destroy you too."

The Alpha’s eyes narrowed, and I saw the distrust in them. "And why should I trust you? You are Shadowfang. We have spilled each other’s blood. Our packs have been enemies for generations."

I looked at him, and I felt the truth burning in my chest. "Because the enemy of my enemy is my friend, Alpha. And right now, Malachai is our enemy. He does not care about old grudges. He does not care about past battles. He will destroy us all."

I saw the conflict on the Alpha’s face. He did not trust us. He had no reason to trust us. We had been enemies for so long that the hatred ran deep. But I could also see the fear in his eyes. He knew that I was telling the truth.

I pressed on, and I felt the urgency rising in my voice. "Malachai will not care about old grudges," I said. "He will not care about past battles. He will destroy you, just like he will destroy us. He will take your land, your people, and your freedom. And there will be nothing left."

The Alpha was quiet for a long moment. I could see the war raging behind his eyes.

I watched his face, and I saw the memories flickering behind his eyes. I saw the pain of past battles, the loss of friends, the scars that had never fully healed. He was not just an Alpha. He was a wolf who had lost everything and rebuilt it from the ashes.

I understood that kind of pain. I had felt it myself. And I knew that sometimes, the hardest thing to do was to trust again.

Then he spoke, and his voice was heavy with resignation. "What do you need from us?"

Silas stepped forward, and I heard the calm in his voice. "We need your warriors, Alpha. We need your strength. We need you to stand with us against Malachai."

The Alpha was quiet for another long moment. Then he nodded slowly. "Then we will stand with you. But know this: if you betray us, I will hunt you down myself."

I met his gaze, and I did not flinch. I could feel the weight of his threat, but I was not afraid. I had faced worse than his anger.

"I would expect nothing less, Alpha," I said, and I meant every word.

I stood at the border of Blackmoor Valley, and I watched Talia and Kaelen walk toward me. Behind me, I could hear the footsteps of the new recruits. Wolves from packs that had once been our enemies. Wolves who had chosen to stand with us.

The walk back had been long and quiet. Silas and I had not spoken much, but we had not needed to. We had accomplished what we set out to do, and that was enough. The new recruits followed behind us, and I could hear them murmuring among themselves. They were nervous, uncertain, and maybe a little bit afraid. But they were here. They had come.

I felt a surge of pride at that. I had done something that mattered. I had brought them hope.

I felt the grin spreading across my face, and I could not stop it. "I told you, Luna. The enemy of my enemy is my friend."

Talia looked at the new recruits, and I saw the hope in her eyes. "You did it, Jax. You actually did it."

I shrugged, and I felt the pride in my chest. "I told you I would, Luna. I always keep my promises."

Piper pushed through the crowd, and I saw her run to me.

I saw her pushing past the warriors, her eyes searching for me in the crowd. When she found me, I saw the tension leave her shoulders. The fear in her eyes faded, replaced by relief. She had been waiting for me, worrying about me, and now I was back.

I opened my arms, and she ran into them.

She threw her arms around me, and I felt her body against mine. I felt her warmth, and I heard her breathing, ragged with relief.

"I told you I would come back," I said, and my voice was soft.

She pulled back, and I saw the tears in her eyes. "You did, Jax. You actually did."

I grinned, and I felt the joy spreading through my chest. "I always keep my promises, Piper. That is who I am."

She laughed, and I saw the happiness on her face. "I know, Jax. I know."

I looked at the recruits, and I felt the warmth spreading through my chest. We had done it. We had brought them in. The alliance was growing, and we were getting stronger.

The battle was coming. But we were ready.
