The heroes want to kill me
Chapter 31: Unforgettable regrets
Soon the next day arrived and I was already eager for the answer I would likely get from Ariadne. And this time I am not taking any other answer except for the reason.
Breakfast started as usual, we had a yam porridge for the breakfast and it was so delicious. it was delicious to the point where I felt like licking the plate, but that would just be unethical, so I refuse my urge.
After the breakfast I went toward Ariadne for her explanation, and thank God she didn’t make any other excuse. she just directed me toward her room, she said we don’t need to cast her deed to the whole world, that it was better for it to be kept private.
I agreed with her demand, it is not as if it concerned me where she wants to talk, all I am concerned about is just about the reason why she is going late at night.
we reached her room in 20 seconds. her room was still almost the same, except from some little changes, there is a new wardrobe and some other things, the wall was now a different color, the stars and the moon sticker in the ceiling was no longer there, the stickers had been removed. The ceiling where the sticker was has been painted with a white and black paint.
we sat on the bed that still remains constant.
i saw that she was not really talking like she was thinking on what she can tell me, so I said to her.
"please kindly explain to me what you have been doing in the middle of the night, explain why I saw your face and shoes covered in dirt, mud and grimes of what I don’t know, explain that and stop fidgeting around.
She wanted to tell him the truth but before she can do that, she felt a strong barrier holding her down, a barrier that won’t let her say what she wants to say, but she knows that she have to give a reason on why she was out at night. she did not even understand how she was caught, she waited till everybody was asleep, she still waited extra 30 minutes and yet she was caught, and to make it worst she was caught by harry, the only person she don’t want to be caught by, apart from her mother.
she opened her mouth then closed it. her mind racing with ideas and thoughts that her close to the actual truth, something that will sound believable, something that he would gladly eat up, something that would satisfy him without having to reveal the actual truth. well it is not as if she can tell the truth if she wants to even self.
Harry who was watching her was already close to snapping, she was still fidgeting after being told to stop fidgeting, his patience was visibly fraying. He’d been her best friend since they were seven years of age, since the day he’d defended her from a bully on the playground and she’d repaid him by sharing her sandwich. even though he had already known her before since both their mothers are also best friends since they were young, more like how biological sisters are. He knew her better than anyone. He’d know if she lied.
Harry was already getting worried, maybe her mother was right that something was seriously wrong, because for her to be fidgeting like this it may means that all her mother worries did not come from nothing.
"I was..." She paused, her eyes not darting around the room as if the answer might be the real truth, her eyes remained focus on Harry eyes. "I was at the cemetery."
Harry blinked. "The cemetery?"
"Oakwood Cemetery. Out past the highway." She was committed now, the words tumbling out before she could second-guess them.
"wait, Oakwood cemetery, what are you doing...
before he can complete the word he wants to say he was interrupted.
"I know it sounds crazy, but just—just let me explain, okay? Please?"
she made it sounds like she was really speaking the truth, but she was only doing it to sell the lies well.
He didn’t say anything, but he didn’t leave either. He just stood there, arms crossed, waiting.
Ariadne took a shaky breath and sat down on the edge of her bed, suddenly aware of how exhausted she was. Four hours of... of whatever that had been. Her legs ached, her feet throbbed, and there was a strange, hollow feeling in her chest, like she’d left something important behind.
"I don’t know when it begins but I think it started a day after that day, you know that day at the club, it all begins then. she continues, "I started having some certain dreams.
"Dreams about different old people, over and over, it was like my mind was trying to tell me something, I don’t know. some people may say it was just a dream that it was nothing more, but I believe that dreams are a passage to a reality that can tell the future.
"you see this dream are not just related to old people I don’t know, I saw my grandmother and my grandpa, you know that my grandpa was already even dead before I was born, I can even count the amount of time I have seen my grandpa picture with one hand. In the dream they are always trying to tell me something, but I don’t seem to be able to hear or see what they are telling me. if it has reached that stage in the dream everything just felt blur.
"Not just dreams," Ariadne continued, gaining confidence as she spoke. The lie was taking shape now, solidifying into something she could almost believe herself. "She talks to me, Harry. She tells me some things. Things that gave me hint on things I couldn’t possibly know—about the family, about the past, about..." She hesitated, then plunged ahead. "About where she hid things. even though they were extremely vague, I still got some idea that I pieced together, and now I am trying to find this Important things. "Harry I need to know, you know I wasn’t there on the day she died. she took care of me, but the day I should take care of her I wasn’t there."
she said this, even though it was a lie, there was still some truth hidden in it. She felt some regret, regret that she wasn’t around the day she died, she knew she was sick and she always wanted to visit her, but she wasn’t able to make time for her. she should have make time but she didn’t and that would be one of the greatest regrets she would always have, even till the day she die.
