Chapter 12: Chapter 9: Talisman True Inheritance, Foundation Establishment Magic Corpse
"Who... are... you?"
This Magic Corpse could talk?
Hearing Ye Chenglin’s question, Lu Chen was greatly surprised. This was his first time encountering a talking Magic Corpse.
Based on the knowledge about Magic Corpses he had learned at Luocheng First High School, usually, only those that reached the Corpse Pill Stage possessed human-like intelligence. A small fraction of them could achieve Enlightenment before reaching the Corpse Pill Stage. These kinds of Magic Corpses either had extremely strong willpower, allowing them to resist the reanimation taking over their bodies, or they harbored a deep obsession that they couldn’t let go of even after death. Regardless of which it was, such Magic Corpses were extremely dangerous. They were no longer beasts acting on instinct, but intelligent creatures with a sense of self.
Facing Ye Chenglin’s question, Lu Chen thought for a moment before replying, "Lu Chen, a handyman of the Cyan Cloud Sect’s Outer Sect."
"Cyan Cloud Sect... Outer Sect... handyman..."
His words seemed to trigger some of Ye Chenglin’s memories, making his eyes even more confused. Lu Chen didn’t rush to attack; instead, he stood quietly in place, waiting for Ye Chenglin’s response.
By now, he already understood that this Ancient Cultivator’s Tomb was a cemetery built by the Cyan Cloud Sect for its disciples in the game. Although he was currently just a lowly handyman of the Cyan Cloud Sect in the game, he could still gather a lot of information. For instance, he knew very well that the in-game Cyan Cloud Sect had definitely not declined to the point where its disciples’ resting place would suffer mass reanimation. Therefore, the timeline within the Dungeon and the timeline in the game must be vastly different.
Lu Chen wanted to know exactly which period of the Cyan Cloud Sect this Dungeon’s timeline was in, and he was also curious about what had happened to the Sect outside the Dungeon. After all, breaching a Sect overseen by a Divinity Transformation Stage expert was absolutely no easy task. There was definitely some shocking secret hidden behind it. Since he didn’t have to worry about dying in the Dungeon anyway, he could completely afford to chat with this self-aware Magic Corpse first.
"Cyan Cloud Sect, Cyan Cloud Sect..."
Ye Chenglin lowered his head, constantly muttering these words. Gradually, his eyes grew brighter, as if he had finally remembered something.
"Right, Cyan Cloud Sect. Yes, I am Ye Chenglin, a True Disciple of Ten Thousand Talisman Peak, from the seventieth generation of the Cyan Cloud Sect...
"But... why am I here..."
Ye Chenglin stood up in a daze, looking at the corpses scattered around him. These bodies had either rotted away to nothing but dry bones, or they were severely mangled, as if they had been gnawed on by something.
"Brother Luo, Senior Sister Gao, Junior Sister Zhao, how did you turn into this..."
Ye Chenglin walked up to a few corpses, his expression slowly shifting from bewilderment to sorrow.
"Oh, I remember now. I killed you with my own hands.
"Master said that I possess the Innate Nine Yin, and that after I die, I am bound to reanimate and turn into a corpse.
"If the Sect ever suffered a disaster in the future and the disciples’ resting place was disturbed, I would be the one to step in and intervene.
"I must not let anyone out, and I must not let anyone in. I must not let anyone out, and I must not let anyone in..."
Ye Chenglin continuously repeated these words, and the aura of death around his body slowly became thicker. By this point, Lu Chen also roughly understood the cause and effect of the situation.
As someone with the rare Innate Nine Yin, Ye Chenglin belonged to the type that was guaranteed to undergo corpse transformation after death. His master had taken advantage of this to assign him a task: to guard this underground tomb. Should any disciple’s corpse reanimate in the tomb, Ye Chenglin would be the one to take action and completely eliminate them. Aside from that, Ye Chenglin also had to act as a Tomb Guardian, dealing with any strangers who trespassed into the tomb.
As for why the Cyan Cloud Sect would risk corpse transformations just to bury their disciples in the ground, Lu Chen understood this very well.
Since ancient times, the Cultivation Realm had always adhered to a single belief: "The soul returns to its homeland, and the buried find peace."
This meant that only by properly burying a person’s corpse could their soul return to their homeland and eventually undergo reincarnation. If they allowed their disciples’ corpses to lie exposed in the wilderness, their souls would wander outside. Not only would they be unable to reincarnate, but their accumulated resentment would turn them into ghosts that would plague the region. Therefore, the tradition of burying the dead had been passed down ever since.
This wasn’t just the case in the game; even in reality, the Nine Provinces Immortal Alliance that Lu Chen belonged to followed this rule as well.
Normally, as long as the tomb’s location wasn’t in some perilous land with a Yin Vein, there was a high probability that the corpses buried there wouldn’t reanimate. However, something unknown must have happened to this underground tomb—or perhaps to the Cyan Cloud Sect that built it—causing the Yin Qi here to become extremely dense. Because of this, the disciples inside the tomb had successively mutated into stiff corpses.
The bodies surrounding Ye Chenglin were undoubtedly those Cyan Cloud Sect disciples who had undergone corpse transformation. The wounds on his body were likely left behind from fighting these Magic Corpses. In a sense, it was exactly because of Ye Chenlin’s existence that this large horde of Magic Corpses remained sleeping underground, unable to cause havoc on the surface. He had truly fulfilled his duty to the utmost.
But this wasn’t exactly good news for Lu Chen right now. In addition to preventing the Magic Corpses in the tomb from getting out, Ye Chenglin also had to prevent outsiders from coming in. And Lu Chen was undoubtedly an outsider.
"You... shouldn’t be here..."
Ye Chenglin looked at Lu Chen, slowly walking down from the Corpse Mountain and Blood Sea. Then, he raised his only right arm and proficiently drew something in the air.
