The Enhanced Doctor
Chapter 1395: The Great Devil’s Reward Is Too Heavy
Chapter 1395: Chapter 1395: The Great Devil’s Reward Is Too Heavy
"Doctor, doctor, can you schedule a gastroscope for me?"
Early the next morning, Liu Banxia had just come back from breakfast when that patient from last night ran up to him.
"It’s already scheduled. This whole morning we’ll finish up the rest of your tests, then you go have a good rest and clear your mind." Liu Banxia said.
"Doctor, doesn’t that mean my condition is really serious?" The patient started worrying again.
"What are you overthinking for? Telling you to clear your mind means just go rest properly. Relax, if you really do need surgery, even if we don’t do it in the morning, I’ll get it done for you by the afternoon one way or another." Liu Banxia said.
The patient nodded. "Then it has to be you doing it. I asked around last night, they all said you’re really good."
"Well now, looks like I’ve got a bit of a reputation already. As long as you feel reassured, that’s good." Liu Banxia patted his shoulder.
The patient finally felt at ease and trotted off happily toward the endoscopy unit.
"Seems I really am quite something now, even have a name already." Liu Banxia said with a laugh.
"Teacher Liu, your reputation is huge, really getting things done." Xu Yino gave him a thumbs up.
"Too naughty. What, are you planning a coup or something. What else do we have today? I remember there was something, but I can’t think of it." Liu Banxia asked.
"Teacher Liu, no way, even you have things you can’t remember?" Miao Rui asked curiously.
"Why couldn’t I forget? Lately there’s been way too many things, one after another. Anyway I just remember I definitely have something on today, I just can’t recall what." Liu Banxia said.
"That’s already pretty impressive. Today is the follow-up day for that liver transplant patient." Liu Yiqing said.
"I knew it, I kept feeling there was something. Liu Yiqing performed very well, what kind of reward should I give you?" Liu Banxia asked with a grin.
The expression on Liu Yiqing’s face was tangled and on high alert.
Normally, if someone wants to give you a reward, you’d be over the moon. But when the big demon king is giving out rewards, who dares assume it’s a good thing?
The big demon king is "moody and unpredictable", you’ve got to tread carefully with this kind of stuff.
"Chicken drumsticks... pig’s trotters... doesn’t sound that fun." Staring at Liu Banxia, Liu Yiqing spoke a bit hesitantly.
Because Liu Banxia kept that smiley face the whole time; who knew what he was actually thinking inside?
"How much time do you need to think? Want to discuss it with your little buddies?" Liu Banxia asked.
"Teacher Liu, you’re making this hard on people. At least give a hint." Xu Yino stood up for Liu Yiqing.
"Okay, hint: it’s a reward." Liu Banxia said.
Forget everyone else, even Su Wenhao rolled his eyes.
What kind of hint is that?
"I’ve decided: whatever you give, I’ll take." Liu Yiqing said.
Nothing to think about; thinking is useless anyway. Just straightforwardly take whatever comes and don’t overanalyze.
"Good. In that case, for tomorrow’s first TaTME procedure, you’ll do the initial dissection." Liu Banxia said, then drifted off to the side.
Liu Yiqing was dumbfounded, and her little buddies were dumbfounded too. Even Xu Yino shuffled a bit to the side—this could indeed be called a reward, it’s just that the pressure attached to the reward was a bit heavy.
"Oh right, for that laparoscopic-assisted colonic NOSES case, I still need to pick another lucky one. Do your best." Liu Banxia, who hadn’t walked far, turned back and called out again.
The rest glanced at each other, then all clustered around Liu Yiqing.
"It’s over, it’s over, this time it’s really over. Nuonuo, I feel all tingly, even my feet are numb, I kinda want to go to the bathroom." Liu Yiqing said bitterly.
"If it were me I’d be numb too. What are we supposed to do, how can it just suddenly land on us like this? And for the second one he won’t even announce it directly, isn’t that just psychological torture?" Xu Yino said.
Miao Rui and the others nodded in strong agreement, it really was torture.
"Don’t worry about yourselves for a second. Are we buddies or not? What am I supposed to do?" Liu Yiqing asked anxiously.
"What else can you do? Just don’t run around helping today. As long as there aren’t too many patients, you just watch the videos and go through the patient’s data." Xu Yino said.
"I actually think you’ll be fine. After all, we’ve observed tons of surgeries. It’s just that the operating difficulty is a bit high, so we’re all lacking a bit of confidence."
"Whenever we’ve had time, didn’t we go into the OR and tinker around a bit? I think it’s just switching to actual hands-on, that’s all. And I still remember that patient—the tumor’s not big, mid-rectal cancer, so the difficulty shouldn’t be that high either. That’s about right, yeah?"
"Nuonuo, even you’re not sure, how am I supposed to be sure?" Liu Yiqing said with a bitter smile.
"Well I don’t have much confidence either, do I? You four, what are you doing, none of you can step up?" Xu Yino looked at Miao Rui and the others and said.
"That’s intracorporeal resection. If it were laparoscopic-assisted resection it’d be fine, but intracorporeal... is a bit exhausting." Miao Rui said.
In an instant, thanks to Liu Banxia’s reward, the Six Minis were all shrouded in gloom. Even the interns not far away, seeing what they looked like now, knew something big had gone down.
"How did you torment them this time?" Wang Chao, happily arriving for work, asked.
"They’re my beloved troops, how could I torment them? I’m giving them rewards. We’ve got two NOSES procedures tomorrow, so I’m letting them enter the hands-on stage." Liu Banxia said.
"First case goes as a reward to Liu Yiqing; who gets the second one depends on how they perform. Isn’t that great? Competition, rewards—now that’s what I call delightful."
Wang Chao glanced at him and shook his head helplessly. "Your love is way too heavy, they really can’t easily handle it. Are you sure they’re ready for this?"
"Sure, certain, and absolutely. As for getting prepared for this, don’t say now—give them another six months and they still won’t be fully ready. They’ve got to actually do it." Liu Banxia said.
"These two patients’ indexes are quite good. Tumor size, location, physical indicators, all very good. As cases for them to practice on, they’re very suitable."
Wang Chao nodded. "That’s true, but for them the pressure is definitely huge. NOSES surgery, huh—this is a key project the whole hospital’s pushing, and you’re just dumping it on them. Tsk tsk, they all have big hearts."
"I wonder who the second lucky one will be. Do you think they’ll draw lots? I remember you guys have drawn lots a few times before, right? It was kinda fun."
"What are you gloating about? Brotherly love can be shared with you too. Next time we have a liver surgery, you’re up, I’ll watch." Liu Banxia said.
"Come on, you’re trying to love me to death. Don’t screw people over like that." Wang Chao was deeply troubled.
"My god, what are you two talking about?" Passing by, Shi Lei stopped in his tracks, his face full of curiosity.
"Isn’t it this guy—this highly respectable Director Liu—who’s planning to let the six little ones do hands-on NOSES surgery." Wang Chao said.
Shi Lei gave a big thumbs-up. "Go for it."
"Wait, Boss Shi, you don’t have any other thoughts?" Wang Chao asked in surprise.
"What thoughts? Whatever happens with him, whatever decisions he makes, can you measure it with normal logic? How else is he supposed to show his love for you?" Shi Lei asked curiously.
"He’s planning that next time we have a half-liver resection–level surgery, I’ll be the one to do it." Wang Chao said, shoulders slumped.
"Not bad, that’s actually okay. You should level up already; you can’t keep using your post as chief resident to slack off." Shi Lei nodded.
"See? I wasn’t wrong. When it’s time to work hard, you’ve gotta work hard." Liu Banxia said.
"Our department focuses mainly on emergency patients. We do get some who come specifically for our reputation, but most of them are here for the director."
"Think about it—if you don’t grab the opportunities yourself, when will you ever rise up? Slowly build up experience and try to make it so that within two years you can independently handle all the liver surgeries."
"Liu Yiqing and Xu Yino are already doing half-livers. You’ve had almost as much exposure as they have, so you definitely won’t have a problem. Come on, count it as my wedding gift to you."
"Can I refuse it?" Wang Chao asked bitterly.
"What do you think? Should I go talk to Auntie Zheng, or should I go talk to Officer Ma?" Liu Banxia shot back.
"You win."
Wang Chao tossed out the line, then went over to join the six little ones.
Fellow sufferers under the same sky have to share a common language.
"You confident?" Shi Lei asked.
"About eighty percent. Don’t dare say a hundred." Liu Banxia said.
"That’s enough. In surgery, an eighty percent success rate is already very high. I’m going to go change; we’ll talk after." Shi Lei said, then headed inside.
Just then, the liver transplant patient and his daughter and son all arrived.
"Good, good, really good. You look much better than last time." Liu Banxia said with a smile.
"Director Liu, we really can’t thank you enough. My dad and my brother have both been recovering very well these past weeks." the patient’s daughter said.
"Yeah, I actually feel like I’m basically back to normal now." the patient’s son said.
"You still need to be careful. Since it’s not busy right now, hurry up and register, then I’ll order all the tests and you can get them done right away." Liu Banxia said.
"Okay. Director Liu, we’ll let you get back to work." the patient’s son said.
And sure enough, both father and son looked great—that meant their recovery really was good.
If there were any problems, it would show clearly in their physical condition. Especially jaundice—after this long, you’d spot it at a glance.
Right now their complexions were rosy. The old man’s overall condition was a bit worse, but still up to standard.
And there are a lot of items to check in liver transplant follow-ups; all the related tests would keep them busy for a while.
After they finished registering and Liu Banxia ordered all the tests, he led the six little ones, who looked like they were suffering bitterly, to start rounds.
He actually quite enjoyed seeing them like this—it was fun.
They had barely passed three wards when his phone rang.
"Chief Director, this is Liu Banxia." Once the call connected, Liu Banxia quickly said.
"An old friend of mine, stage II rectal cancer, needs TaTME. He’s just been sent to VIP." Chen Zhenxing said.
"Okay, I’m doing rounds. I’ll have Liu Yiqing and Su Wenhao go up and take a look first." Liu Banxia said quickly.
"Good, that’s it then." Chen Zhenxing hung up.
The rest he left to Liu Banxia, and felt completely at ease.
