The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]
Chapter 30: The Trap Spring
The heavy silence of the high-altitude plateau was broken only by the whistling mountain wind and the mechanical click of three heavy crossbows locking into position behind Zevryn’s back.
Cassandra wore a mask of cold anticipation, her eyes fixed on the drow's back as she waited for the crimson glyphs to incinerate him. The veteran guard-conspirator rested his hand on his broadsword, a cruel, smug grin stretching across his face.
Zevryn did not flinch. His pale eyes traced the intricate, glowing conduits of the arcane lock. Centuries of Underdark survival and deep-vault raiding had taught him that ancient wards were not impenetrable walls, specifically living equations built on rhythmic mana flow. Where others saw a lethal trap, Zevryn saw a series of pressure points.
With slow, deliberate precision, he reached out his gloved hand. Instead of forcing the mechanism, he slid his fingertips along a hairline seam in the basalt frame, locating the master anchor stone. With a subtle, calculated twist, he bypassed the primary trigger array and rerouted the volatile arcane feedback loop back into the lateral seal.
Hiss.
The blinding crimson light flickered, turned a dull, muddy amber, and instantly died. With a deep, groaning rumble that shook the mountain dust from the lintel, the massive stone door slid inward, revealing the vast, treasure-laden darkness of the true vault.
For a heartbeat, absolute silence gripped the plateau.
Cassandra’s smug smile vanished, replaced by sheer, unadulterated shock. She stared at the open doorway, then at the drow, who stood completely untouched, calmly turning back to face them.
"What... how did you manage that?" Cassandra stammered, her voice cracking.

"Kill him!" the guard-conspirator roared, his face twisting in panic. "He didn't trigger it! Shoot him down!"
The three hired mercenaries pulled their triggers in unison. Three heavy iron bolts shrieked through the air, aimed straight at Zevryn’s chest.
They struck empty air.
With a burst of motion so fast it left an afterimage, Zevryn vanished into a pool of shadow using his advanced stealth footwork. The cross-bolts shattered harmlessly against the stone doorframe behind him.
Before the mercenaries could reload or adjust their aim, the darkness around them came alive.
Zevryn materialized directly behind the first mercenary. With a lightning-fast motion, he drew his twin mithril sabers, their edges glistening with the obsidian, pine-scented sheen of the newly brewed Chitin-Stalker venom. A single, fluid slash opened a shallow gash across the mercenary's neck.
The man dropped his crossbow, his eyes widening in terror as the neurotoxin hit his bloodstream. Within three heartbeats, his muscles seized, his throat locked, and he collapsed heavily onto the stone, completely paralyzed and suffocating.
"Spread out! Form a line!" the guard shouted, drawing his notched broadsword and swinging blindly into the shadows.
Zevryn moved like a ghost through the dim torchlight. He parried a ferocious overhead strike from the second mercenary with a sharp clang of steel, spun inside the man's guard, and drove the pommel of his saber hard into his jaw, dropping him instantly.
The third mercenary panicked, spinning around with his dagger drawn, but Zevryn flicked his wrist. A small, wax-sealed phial pulled from his inner harness shattered against the mercenary's forearm, soaking his sleeve in the caustic, paralyzing extract. The man shrieked as the potent agent burned through his skin and hit his nerves, his arm going instantly dead as he crashed to the ground.
Within seconds, the three hired guns were neutralized.
The heavy courtyard silence rushed back in, broken only by the terrified, ragged breathing of Cassandra and her guard-conspirator. They backed away until their shoulders hit the cold basalt wall of the cliff, their weapons shaking in their grip.
Zevryn stepped out from the shadows, his storm-grey cloak whispering against the stone. His pale eyes locked onto them, devoid of anger, radiating only a freezing, absolute supremacy.
The hunters had become the prey.
