Chapter 29: The Western Gate
The heavy iron gate of the western wall loomed against the ink-black sky, cast in the flickering, jaundiced light of iron torches. Zevryn approached with absolute silence, his storm-grey cloak pulled low over his silver hair. Beneath the fabric, his newly minted custom shadow-hide armor absorbed every trace of light, while the micro-linked mithril mesh beneath flexed effortlessly with his stride. Tucked snugly into the spring-loaded gauntlet mechanism mounted on his left armguard were two phials of the refined Chitin-Stalker venom, ready to fire poisoned needle darts at a subtle flick of his wrist, with three more safely nested upon a dimensional shelf within his spatial ring, alongside his emergency provisions and salvaged mana cores. His twin mithril sabers rode lightly at his hips, balanced for a swift and silent draw.
At the edge of the road, five figures waited beside a pair of heavily laden pack mules.
Cassandra turned as Zevryn stepped out of the shadows, her brass-rimmed spectacles glinting in the torchlight. Beside her stood the veteran guard-conspirator who had shared her bed and her dark ambitions, along with three other hardened mercenaries armed with heavy cross-bolts and notched broadswords. They looked like a party built for slaughter, not scholarship.
"You're punctual," Cassandra noted, a tight, artificial smile touching her lips as she tossed a heavy leather coin pouch at his feet, covering the remainder of his exorbitant fifty-gold fee. "Good. We have a long climb ahead of us before dawn."
Zevryn did not bother picking the pouch up from the dirt. He simply flicked his wrist, and with a faint spatial hum, the heavy gold vanished directly into his bronze storage ring. The mercenaries blinked in surprise at the display of spatial magic, their wariness spiking visibly.

"Let's move," Zevryn said, his voice flat and cold. "The mountain won't wait."
The ascent up the jagged, wind-scoured slopes of the Iron Spine was a grueling test of endurance, but for the drow, the steep altitude and freezing gale felt like a homecoming. The group moved in tight, cautious formation, the pack mules huffing plumes of white vapor into the frigid air. Throughout the march, Cassandra and her guard-conspirator kept glancing back at Zevryn, exchanging quiet whispers and smug, conspiratorial grins under the assumption that the drow was walking blindly into his own execution.
Zevryn let them believe it. He played the part of the quiet, solitary mercenary, his pale eyes cataloging every shift in their posture, every weapon angle, and every hidden dagger tucked into their belts.
Hours later, as the pale fingers of dawn began to bleed over the jagged mountain peaks, the expedition reached the desolate, stone-carved plateau that concealed the true entrance of the Iron Spine.
Towering monoliths of black basalt marked the threshold, identifying the exact site of the decoy tomb where they had previously fought the Chitin-Stalkers. But this time, Cassandra led them past the collapsed outer chamber, navigating a narrow, vine-choked crevice hidden deep behind the northern foundation wall.
A heavy stone door, sealed with ancient, pulsing arcane glyphs that glowed with a faint, malevolent crimson light, barred their way.
Cassandra stopped before the threshold, turning to face Zevryn with a look of thinly veiled triumph.
"Here it is," Cassandra said, stepping aside. "The true vault. The wards protecting this door are lethal to arcane casters, but someone with your agile footwork and sharp eye can dismantle the trigger glyph. Open the way for us, Zevryn."
The three hired mercenaries unslung their cross-bolts, keeping their weapons pointed casually, yet deliberately, in the drow's direction.
Zevryn stared at the pulsing crimson glyphs, a razor-thin, cold smile hidden beneath the shadow of his hood.
