Chapter 748: Chapter 748: Public Apology (2)
In Laura White’s opinion, the fact that someone with Susan Caldwell’s family background and status had to apologize to Vera Xavier only proved that Vera’s own background was even more powerful. At the same time, she grew even more curious about the identity of Vera’s boyfriend.
When Susan Caldwell first heard that she wouldn’t be expelled, she breathed a sigh of relief, thinking her call to Julian Caldwell had worked. But then she was informed she would have to apologize to Vera Xavier in front of the entire student body and faculty. She immediately refused and scrambled to call Julian Caldwell.
After ten seconds of silence, Julian Caldwell said from the other end of the line, "Regarding this matter, no matter what tricks Vera Xavier pulled, you are officially the one at fault. And you’re still a student at Veridia University, so you have to follow the administration’s arrangements."
"Dad, how can you make me apologize to that despicable villain, Vera Xavier! Why don’t you come to the school and smooth things over with the president for me!" Susan Caldwell immediately burst into tears.
Julian Caldwell’s heart ached for her, but he was swamped with official business and simply couldn’t find the time to go to the university. Besides, the president had already made himself perfectly clear during their video call; the matter was already set in stone.
Julian Caldwell had previously inquired about Lane Yancey’s character. Lane Yancey was a nationally renowned scholar and education expert, as well as a smooth operator. However, he also possessed the unique integrity of a true academic. His diplomacy and worldliness had their limits; once a certain line was crossed, he became exceptionally adamant and difficult to reason with.
Julian Caldwell already had a sense that this was Lane Yancey’s bottom line: Susan would not be expelled, but she would have to apologize to Vera.
He thought for a moment before saying, "Susan, life is a long journey, and it won’t always be smooth sailing. I can’t be by your side to protect you forever. You’re grown up now; you need to handle your own problems. Just consider this incident a setback in life. I’m busy right now, so I can’t talk anymore."
He hung up the phone, but a sense of frustration began to brew within him.
When Susan Caldwell had called him earlier, he had been furious the moment he heard Vera Xavier had brought people to beat her up. After he got the full story, he was sure Vera Xavier would seize this opportunity to get Susan kicked out of Veridia University.
So, he had immediately called Lane Yancey after that. To his surprise, Lane Yancey told him that Vera Xavier had actually pleaded on Susan Caldwell’s behalf!
This completely upended his perception of Vera Xavier. In his memory, she wasn’t the type to concede. If she did back down, it was always for some ulterior motive.
In the end, this perception was just the image of Vera that Susan had painted for him. He couldn’t help but wonder now, ’Did Vera really plead for Susan, or did she just want to humiliate her?’
The more he thought about it, the more plausible it seemed.
But even knowing how likely this was, he couldn’t go back to Lane Yancey to plead Susan’s case. Officially, Vera Xavier was not only the victim but also a magnanimous one.
If he went back to Lane Yancey to try and get Susan out of the apology, even he would feel that he was going too far, at least on paper.
Julian Caldwell frowned slightly. ’Vera Xavier,’ he thought, ’I must meet you one day, just to see how cunning you really are!’
He was now thoroughly intrigued by Vera Xavier. ’Just what is this girl capable of, to be able to twist the situation around like this!’
