The Billionaire Who Stole His Wife

Chapter 51: A Mother’s Favorite Monster

  • Next Chapter

"Mom?"

Anthony’s voice cracked on the word.

Not anger.

Not even fear.

Something smaller.

Younger.

The kind of disbelief that came from realizing the monster under the bed had been invited in by someone who used to tuck you into it.

For one breath, no one moved.

The phone lay on the wet concrete, cracked screen glowing upward while Martha Morrison’s voice hung through the warehouse speakers like poison.

Is it done?

Allison stared at the phone.

Then at Anthony.

Then at Lucian.

"Oh," she said softly. "That family tree is rotten from the roots."

Dorian Kreel smiled like he’d been waiting for exactly that silence.

Anthony stumbled one step toward the phone. "Mom?"

The line went quiet for half a second.

Then Martha’s voice changed.

Not enough for panic.

Enough for realization.

"Anthony?"

He looked sick. "What did you do?"

"What did I do?" Martha snapped, but her voice shook. "What did you do, Anthony? You lost everything. You let that Croft girl turn our family into a joke."

Allison’s jaw tightened.

Lucian’s hand shifted slightly, not touching her, but close enough that she felt the restraint in him. He wanted to move. To end this. To get Clara. But Dorian still stood near the center of the dock with three armed men and a child’s life dangling somewhere behind a screen.

They needed him talking.

Adrian seemed to understand the same thing.

He tilted his head slightly toward Elias’s comm channel.

Trace.

Elias was already moving.

Dorian stepped back casually, gun held low at his side.

"Keep going, Mrs. Morrison. They’re finally listening."

Martha inhaled sharply. "Who is there?"

Adrian’s voice cut in, calm enough to freeze blood.

"Everyone you should have feared."

Silence.

Then Martha laughed.

It came out brittle.

"Adrian Croft."

"Martha."

"You always did think your daughter was better than everyone."

Adrian’s eyes went deadly calm.

"No," he said. "I knew it."

Allison blinked.

Simone, who had finally moved into the warehouse under Elias’s furious protest and was crouched behind one of Adrian’s guards near the entrance, whispered, "That was disturbingly hot in a fatherly way."

Elias hissed beside her, "Why are you here?"

"You left the vehicle."

"I told you to stay in it."

"And miss Martha Morrison reveal herself as the final boss? Absolutely not."

Elias looked like he was seconds from losing his mind. ℴ

Across the dock, Anthony stared at the phone like it might bite him.

"You hired him?" he asked. "You hired these people?"

Martha’s breathing sharpened.

"I did what you were too weak to do."

Anthony flinched.

Actually flinched.

Allison saw it.

And for one complicated second, she almost pitied him.

Almost.

Then she remembered every slap he ignored, every lie he told, every time he let her shrink in his house so his ego could feel large.

Pity faded fast.

Martha continued, voice gaining vicious confidence.

"That girl destroyed our family. Sharon betrayed us. Vivienne lost her mind. Richard is barely speaking. Investors are pulling out. The board wants distance. Everything your father built is burning because one spoiled little Croft brat decided she wanted revenge."

Allison leaned toward the phone slightly.

"Martha, sweetheart, if your empire collapsed because I told the truth, it was built out of cardboard."

Theo made a strangled sound that might’ve been laughter.

Dorian’s smile twitched.

Martha went silent.

Then she hissed, "You."

"Me," Allison said. "Still alive. Still married. Still ruining your day."

Lucian’s mouth barely moved.

A smile.

Small.

Dangerous.

Anthony looked at Allison, then back at the phone.

"You took Clara because of Allison?"

"No," Martha snapped. "I took Clara because leverage was needed."

Lucian’s eyes went black.

The warehouse temperature seemed to drop.

Martha continued, unaware or uncaring that she had just signed her own destruction.

"Vivienne used that child to control Lucian. Anthony used the file to control Vivienne. Everyone had leverage except us."

Allison’s stomach turned.

"So you kidnapped a six-year-old."

"I secured an asset."

The words landed so coldly that even Dorian’s smile faded.

Anthony whispered, "She’s a child."

Martha laughed again, sharp and cruel.

"Don’t suddenly grow a conscience, Anthony. It doesn’t suit you."

That broke something in him.

Not enough to make him good.

But enough to make him look human.

He stared at the phone with wet, furious eyes.

"You sent armed men to kill me."

"No," Martha said. "I sent them to bring you home if you behaved."

Anthony looked around at the bullet holes, shattered glass, blood on the concrete.

"This is behaving?"

"You always were dramatic."

Allison slowly turned to Lucian.

"This explains so much about him."

Lucian didn’t answer.

His entire focus was on Dorian now.

"Where is Clara?" Lucian asked.

Dorian lifted his gun slightly, but not at Lucian.

At the screen.

"Careful."

Adrian’s voice remained calm. "Your employer just confessed on an open line."

Dorian shrugged. "I’m not loyal to employers. I’m loyal to payment."

Theo shifted near a stack of crates, eyes locked on Dorian’s remaining men.

"You took payment from Martha Morrison?"

"Partial payment," Dorian said.

Theo smiled faintly. "Embarrassing."

Dorian’s eyes flicked toward him.

There.

Half a second.

Lucian moved.

Not toward Dorian.

Toward the closest armed man.

The suddenness shattered the standoff.

Theo moved at the exact same time.

Adrian’s security surged.

Gunfire cracked through the warehouse again.

Allison dropped behind a steel container just as bullets sparked against the dock railing. Anthony screamed and scrambled after her, slipping on wet concrete.

"Get away from me," she snapped.

"I don’t want to die!"

"Then crawl quieter!"

Lucian collided with the first attacker hard enough to drive them both into a stack of wooden pallets. The man swung his rifle up, but Lucian caught the barrel, twisted it aside, and slammed his forearm into the man’s throat. The attacker choked, staggered, and Lucian drove a knee into his stomach before ripping the weapon free and throwing it across the floor.

Theo handled the second like he had been waiting all night.

The man lunged at him with a blade.

Theo stepped back once, grin gone, eyes bright.

The blade cut air.

Theo caught the wrist, bent it sharply, and punched the man twice in the ribs before sweeping his leg out. The attacker hit the floor hard. Theo dropped with him, twisted the arm behind his back, and slammed his elbow down just enough to make the weapon clatter loose.

"Night," Theo muttered, then knocked him out with one clean strike.

Allison looked over the crate at that exact moment.

"Okay," she shouted, "that was unnecessarily attractive fighting."

Lucian snapped, "Allison."

"What? I’m married, not blind!"

Even in chaos, Theo laughed.

Dorian did not.

He was already retreating toward the container row, phone in one hand, weapon in the other.

Adrian stepped into his path.

Just stepped.

No gun raised.

No visible panic.

Dorian paused.

Adrian Croft in a soaked charcoal coat, face calm, eyes cold, looked more dangerous unarmed than most men did holding weapons.

"You won’t leave with the child," Adrian said.

Dorian smiled faintly.

"Who said she’s here?"

The warehouse went still for half a second.

Lucian turned sharply.

Allison’s stomach dropped.

Anthony whispered, "What?"

Dorian’s smile widened.

"She was never in this warehouse."

Martha’s voice burst through the phone.

"Dorian—"

He ignored her.

"She was close enough for the audio. Close enough for fear. But not here."

Lucian moved toward him.

Dorian lifted a small black device.

"Stop."

Everyone froze.

The screen behind them flickered.

Clara appeared again.

Still crying.

But this time, the camera angle widened slightly.

A metal wall.

Dim light.

Motion.

Allison’s eyes sharpened.

"She’s moving."

Elias’s voice shouted through comms, "That’s not a room. It’s a container."

Dorian looked pleased.

"Very good."

Lucian’s voice came deadly quiet.

"Which container?"

Dorian tilted his head.

"That depends."

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

"On?"

"Whether Mrs. Morrison pays the rest."

Martha’s voice shook now. "You said—"

"I said I would secure leverage," Dorian cut in. "Not give you a discount because your son is incompetent."

Anthony’s face crumpled with fury and disbelief.

"Mom," he whispered again, but this time the word came out dead.

Like something inside him finally stopped hoping.

Allison saw it.

A person could be awful and still be broken by their mother.

Both could be true.

Martha’s voice lowered viciously.

"You will do as you were paid."

Dorian laughed softly.

"No. I’ll do what keeps me alive."

Then he looked at Lucian.

"You want the girl? Wire one hundred million dollars to the account I send in the next sixty seconds."

Theo scoffed. "That’s your plan? Ransom?"

Dorian’s eyes flicked to him.

"No. The ransom is theater."

Lucian’s jaw clenched.

"What’s the real plan?"

Dorian’s smile thinned.

"To make all of you chase different fires."

A phone buzzed.

Then another.

Then Adrian’s.

Then Lucian’s.

Then Allison’s.

Everyone looked down.

A coordinated blast of messages hit at once.

Security alerts.

Media alerts.

Corporate alerts.

Elias cursed loudly through comms.

"Multiple uploads just went live."

Simone, crouched beside him, grabbed his sleeve. "Uploads of what?"

Elias’s face went pale.

"Everything."

Adrian looked over. "Define everything."

Elias swallowed.

"The clinic file. Morrison blackmail records. Partial Croft surveillance files. Calloway internal movement logs. Sharon’s safe house coordinates—"

Lucian’s head snapped up. "What?"

Allison went cold.

Sharon.

Dorian used the moment.

He threw the black device toward the ground.

Lucian shouted, "Down!"

The device exploded in blinding white light.

Not fire.

Flashbang.

The world turned soundless and white.

Allison hit the floor hard, ears ringing, vision gone.

Hands grabbed her.

For one terrifying second, her body remembered the dark room.

Rope.

Mattress.

Vivienne’s voice.

No.

Not again.

She swung blindly.

Her fist connected with something solid.

A man cursed.

Then Lucian’s voice cut through the ringing.

"Allison!"

"I’m here!"

A hand found hers.

Lucian.

She knew instantly.

His grip was firm, shaking slightly.

Not with fear.

With fury.

When her vision cleared enough to see, Dorian was gone.

So were two of his men.

The big screen still showed Clara inside the moving container, but the feed was glitching badly now.

Anthony lay on the ground nearby, bleeding from his temple and staring at the phone on the floor.

Martha was still on the line.

Silent.

Then Richard Morrison’s voice suddenly entered faintly in the background of her call.

"Martha... what have you done?"

Anthony looked up slowly.

"Dad?"

The line went dead.

Silence settled across the warehouse, broken only by rain and alarms.

Then Elias’s voice came through, frantic.

"Lucian! The container feed is bouncing off a ship transponder."

Lucian stood instantly, pulling Allison up with him.

"Where?"

Elias’s answer came like a gunshot.

"Harbor pier seventeen. Cargo ship departing in nine minutes."

Allison’s blood went cold.

Lucian turned toward the open loading dock.

Theo grabbed his weapon.

Adrian’s face became terrifyingly calm.

Anthony struggled upright.

"I can get you in."

Everyone turned to him.

Allison stared.

Anthony wiped blood from his mouth with a shaking hand.

"It’s a Morrison dock," he said. "They’ll still recognize my access. Maybe."

Lucian looked ready to refuse.

Allison spoke first.

"Then move."

Anthony blinked at her.

She stepped closer, eyes sharp and furious.

"You wanted a chance to be useful?" she snapped. "Here it is. Don’t waste it."

Anthony swallowed hard.

Then nodded.

For once, no argument.

No manipulation.

Just fear.

And maybe guilt.

They moved as one toward the storm.

Behind them, Martha’s cracked phone buzzed one final time on the floor.

A new message lit the screen.

Tell Adrian Croft his daughter was never the only target.
